The centre lock was well needed. Those ‘colour effect’ knobs become so loose over time on battered 900nxs and nxs2 you have to be really delicate with them in dance clubs so they don’t flip left or right slightly and ruin your drop
Can’t wait to start playing on this mixer, Worst booth I’ve played had little bugs crawling out of the mixer when it got too hot. The booth was covered in them
Very well done 👍🏽 My best booth experience was in Japan at Club 0 and Sofia. The attention to detail and the importance placed on the DJ being able to monitor and play comfortably was a dream come true. My worst dj booth experience was at a club here in Las Vegas. The owners spared no expense on gear. But the DJs they hired didn’t respect the gear at all. So after the first few repairs the owners just stopped paying to fix the gear. I ended up bringing a controller every week to make the experience of DJing there mildly palatable. I love the mic mute feature on the A9. I stream on twitch and as such I need to engage/interact with my viewers. But I also post my mixes on Mixcloud, SoundCloud, etc. where my voice isn’t so welcome. Lastly, my cheeky alter-ego “Larry White” would be a shell of his former self without the mic pitch effect. A campy hit with the ladies lol.
The pitch effect on the mic is interesting! For practical application, I could see bumping it down just a touch for us females. Unless trained, a female DJs voice can come out a bit high and shrill over club systems. So, instead of dropping my voice lower, I could just drop the pitch a touch with the effect. My partner Cedar always drops his voice an octave when MCing for better mic translation.
Nice review. Having play on the V10 in clubs heaps it’s so good to know there is a more affordable option with a comparable sound. The V10 is such a huge step up in sound from the NXS2, and it seem the A-9 is too.
idk it's not really that much cheaper IMO, also a pirce increase from the 900nx2, sure the v10 got all the bells & whistles but how does the sound compared to the hi end rotary mixers?
great mixer and great review as always Mojaxx, so good they finally got rid of the channel selector for effects and make it easier to select the channel you want your FX on, but how in the world would you have echos that run on a channel on post fader but cut it with the crossfader? this never made sense, DJs complaining about this since ages. i can't believe they did not change it finally and got rid of the CFA/CFB nonsense and go straight forward with a matrix for all 4 channels. also it looks like you can select only one channel at a time 😂 I can't believe it its still like on a DJM 500. this is an unbelievable fail.
Looks very nice.. lovely… come on pioneer…this is a very special day as for release of the djmA9, nice one Mojax…..blue tooth connectivity brilliant, nice to see lots of options in utilities settings..
Quality! Very expensive but it’s very pro too. Nice. The worst DJ booth I’ve ever played in was Castros nightclub in Bristol, 2003 - 2007, absolutely smashed DJM 600, battered 1210s with very wonky pitches so beat matching was near impossible, so bad that you had to make your mixes no more than a couple of bars. The grounding cables were missing so there was a DIY job every time you were first to play. The monitors were rattling. It was a disaster - but, we all had an amazing time playing and socialising there. Good times.
I didn't go for the 900NXS2 and I stuck with my 2000, mainly for the the fact that the colour FX pots on the 2000 are zero at hard left instead of 12 o'clock so you never miss the zero position. But this center lock idea sounds great! I just wished Pioneer would swap the BEAT FX select encoder for a bank of backlit buttons, a separate button for each FX (like it is on the DJM2000). You see the FX you want to engage and you press it, so much better than twisting a pot left or right until you land on your desired FX. AND... backlit buttons for each FX are way more visible than looking at small text printed on a faceplate especially in a dark environment.
Always loving your videos, watched them all. Besides the fact that you look much more healthy, your videos are always honest and thorough on the details. Thanks for making this and taking the time to go through the product. Worst dj booth without a doubt was the one way too low in Breda. It was some fold out table with a cheap looking screen surrounding it. Crappy lighting and i ended up stacking empty beer crates to elevate the whole mess. Crowd though was really nice! Shoutout to every dj who ever stood behind a too low dj booth (i saw John Summit on some roof with a way too low both too, which made me feel better).
My worst booth: basement club with busted denons in 2010 and a behringer mixer. I had to use instant doubles in serato during every mix. Quickly bought my own gear after that! Set up took a while but it was worth it!
I suppose they couldn't go super crazy on a successor of the Nxs2. I have to say it doesn't seem that big of an update. Still, the new features are definitely appreciated. I still think the djm2000 was their best mixer ever, I'm glad the V10 exists as a spiritual successor.

Improved dac chip choice from what i can see. Pioneer have gone for the ESS chip (..28pro version) over the AKM chips so you should get a brighter sound out of this one with an slight increase in detail and tighter bass... but the AKM chips are a little smoother which can be better for those longer sessions.
There's no chance that two state of the art DAC chips are producing noticeably different sound in this day and age. It's the DSP coding, analog circuitry, PSUs, etc, you're hearing if there's a difference. 20 years ago you could make an argument there were slight differences between budget Wolfson and budget Burr Brown DACs due to tradeoffs, but not now. This is marketing mumbo jumbo like 64bit float vs 32bit float, where you'd have to drill down to differences well below -120dB right near the zero crossings to see a change in the calculations' output, or high/narrow Q filters' subtle performance differences. Heck, no one is capable of saying which filter 'sounds' better or worse. The MP2015 and X1700 are both 32bit 'single precision' float and still blow the socks off any Pioneer. Not DAC brand, not DSP digital domain specs. You could do most of the same sound for most of these mixers, in fact, using just 16/44.1 processing, and might even get superior sound with less sample rate conversion of 44.1 files and no need to add dithering noise... just have to watch your levels in the mix bus and effect sections which you have to do anyway for the outputs. The DSP domain is dictated simply by the chips and accompanying code library you're using. And that's not even getting into the arguments on just doing custom fixed point. Fact is, ESS has less chip shortages right now than AKM, so they went from using ESS on the Tour line as a gimmick to largely moving to ESS out of supply line necessity. Any home user streaming or club with a large sound system that's using the analog outs from the digital DJ media players or digital DJ mixers to the processors needs their head examined, anyway.
@@Reticuli Well my friend, no point in serving steaks on paper plates…if you get my drift. I guess they would have to be heard but knowing ESS and AKM in other implementations, my hunch could be right.
i'll be playing a festival now and will be my first time with the a9. Thanks a lot for the info on the effects brother. The mobius will be played a lot today i think!
Pretty glad i went with a Model 1.4 after seeing the latest offering from pioneer. I've had so many issues with digital app interfaces paired with things like soundcards that i really start zoning out when i hear of companion apps and the like. One knob per function forever baybeee
I’ve got to say .. I’m a big fan of the 900 NX-2 and I still have my original 500 , this new mixer is safe with the same DNA but … having seen those new paddle effects ( especially pitch down) on the Rane 4 and pioneer controller that this already behind what’s happening now.
I have just ordered the a9, I have the 6000 players and X1850, but not impressed with the sound quality from the mixer, love the players though, looking forward to hooking up the a9 to them
1:06 I remember entering a club once where this mixer was displayed as the god of mixers, only to tell the club owner I'd rather play around on a A&H Xone 96, having him looking at me as if I was mentally ill (he said so too). He was convinced (still is I believe) that Pioneer is pro level and everything else is budget crap (literally his words were 'Pioneer is the god of DJ'ing and everything else is utter crap, A&H is the worst you can get'). I laughed at him and said 'I can DJ on anything, but my preference is A&H and second one is Denon DJ. Pioneer is great, I have Pioneer stuff at home, but saying everything other than Pioneer is worthless crap says more about your knowledge than mine'). He was agitated a lot, but couldn't convince other DJ's too when he told my story. The two resident DJ's there laughed at him for calling A&H crap quality and he was devestated that the sound engineer called the club owner a rotten tomato.. I had to laugh :P
@@ChrisBlade. AHA. I've never had any issue with Denon DJ mixers, even while mixing at ab outdoor party in the alps while snowing (light) at minus 10 degrees celcius. The last Pioneer DJ mixer (DJ S11) I worked on in the alps had malfunctionings all the time.
Best DJ booth was at Rex Club in Paris and Vega in Copenhagen. Worst one was at the end of a bar in Chicago with legs knocking the beers barrels all night long and back hurts, but the party was awesome !
The DJM-900 NXS2 is still the king of mixers for most people as a 'club standard'. The A9 mixer is a slightly better mixer, however nothing substantial to really warrant an upgrade if you already have a 900NXS2. I feel like pioneer really just came out with a mixer because the 900NXS2 came out in 2016...however in terms of club standard mixers, at this point there's nothing more you can really add besides effects and novelty buttons. Great review Mojaxx, decent update for the mixer but no real major upgrades to warrant an immediate upgrade. Would like to see pioneer come out in 2023 with a standalone 4 deck all in one (DJM-xz2) I think that's due for a refresher.
Agreed. But, if you are in the market for a new mixer, coming from a budget one, or just finally decided you want a proper full setup, I would say the A9 is a substantially better mixer to choose over the NX2. The sound quality for one, but also some (indeed) minor upgrades that do seem to make this an overall better mixer. Great review as always Mojaxxxxx!
They should have added the v10’s send effects plus isolator. I like the v10, but 6 channels is just overkill for me, hoped they would make a 4 channel v10, but we get this instead, bit of a let down to be honest.
You got some right but there are some Big Updates for Clubs/Festivals that really matters - Stagehand app is great tool for audio engineers/stage managers. There are DJ's that if you even say "No Redlining".. they will do. You can turn their gains down and they will turn them back up - right now they would even know :D I Would say that there is big improvement in Technical side but not so big in performance side.
In the booth at 45 east in Portland, there used to be a sign that said "IF YOU SEE RED, THAT MEANS YOU'RE A SHITTY DJ". They always had 4 NXS 2 Decks and a 900 Mixer. Its a fun booth to play in because of all the LED, and the monitoring is awesome.
Some nice new features. Although I’ll miss two features. 1) I will miss the gate on the sweep/gate colour effect. I loved using it to thin empty drum lines and making live drums sound more digital during transitions. 2) I loved the Xpad on the predecessor. Having the time divisions labeled on the xpad was such a fun and creative way of engaging and playing with effects time divisions. 2 decent downgrades imho but a lot of new features to like.
Shocked they decided to use locking IEC over a powercon connection, but nice to see it called IEC rather than "kettle lead" because we dont walk kettles and its a more professional review than others
DJM-2000nxs still ticking my boxes and lots of hate and wasted space but for me it’s just worked. A second mic input and for my use it would be perfect.
it's a slightly better djm 900 nexus 2. If it had the compressor option on each channel it would have sealed the deal but like you said it's not trying to be a small v10
Worst gig : playing infront of an ice machine inside a bar ( on a Restaurant) & the best one : I represented my country on the Expo 2020 @ Dubai.... That stage was just magic.
definitely a nice review. i feel like the A9 shouldve brought in the USB inputs like the S-11has on the back for DJ's who like to use HID mode (woulda been nice on the V10 too). I use both Rekordbox and Serato depends on what I'm doing, having to bring a hub plus 3 usb 2.0 cables is already annoying and I could only imagine 2 people going Serato b2b on this would be a nightmare. Most people will probably say " well get the battle mixer or convert/you already converted to Rekordbox." However its nice to be able to hop on without the extra shit. Bringing your computer out is already enough. With that being said I love the sound quality and the safety features.
I noticed slip roll is removed from the FX section of the mixer. When you were going through the utility menu with all the different FX settings I was hoping you were gonna poke into roll but you didn't. Please tell me slip roll is an option to replace the regular roll in there. Personally I just find it superior to the regular roll. EDIT: I'm the one dude who actually uses (or at least used to) pitch on the mic. Was just a bit of being silly really, you can find dumb examples in my "newer" DJ videos on my channel where i'd either say my name or the club's name with the pitch all the way down. Very cheesy very not necessary. But it was never needed as a beat effect imo, I can't really think of a time that would ever be useful so i'm glad it's on the mic section now if for whatever reason I want to be cheesy again. XD
id welcome that pitch function on the mic, be cool for the masked dj or to have a skizo conversations with your self beardyman style. may also be useful if your running something other that a mic into that input and wanna toneplay it a bit, still great to see those fx seperate from the main fx so an mc can stand to the side and do their thing.
As always, very nice review! I probably won't run out and buy one any time soon, but very well done!! I look forward to seeing and using one in person. The worst "booth" I've ever been in? I'm not even sure you could call it a booth! I was at a radio station (103.3 KUMD) and about to throw down a live set using a couple tech 12's with some good old fashion wax. I didn't have a chance to check things out before going on the air, and why would I need to? Tech 12's and a mixer? Pretty straight forward setup. As it turns out, the floor was warped and soft. Almost like they set things up on a bunch of rotten plywood. Queuing and tracking? Forget about it! Scratching anything in? LoL!?! Nope... I don't know if I got a single track/record mixed in the way I wanted it to be mixed in. It was BAD!! I had all I could do to just match the beats. That was probably over 20 years ago now, and it still, to this very day, makes me cringe. My best booth experience? I don't really know. I'm not too picky. Just put me on solid ground with gear that works. - Gidz
Great review as always. I wasn't aware Pioneer came out with a mixer to succeed the Nexus 2. As usual, they did not disappoint. I am looking forward to playing on this once enough venues have it.
I once did a gig where I brought a single Denon DJ DN-HS5500 to a place that I was told by them they had an available house DJ mixer I could use. There was a mixer, but it had an intermittent headphone jack and broken cue buttons. That was a tough one.
@mojaxx thank you for always making amazing videos for all us djs around the world! I play old and new vinyl and cdjs equally and am seeking the best sound to blend both. A9 or V10 in your opinion?
Best Booth I have played on is tribe XR virtual reality pioneer kit. I can configure the booth to my liking, play back to back with my friends across the pond, and stream to twitch instantly with a custom avatar and visuals.
Great review. So glad I got my V10 when I did. I came from a 900 nxs 2 and this doesn't seem to be very special at all. Serves it's purpose as an industry standard tho I suppose.
Hi mate just saw your Techniques, in the video is wired up with the neo d+ rca class b rca-rca I’ve been thinking of doing this to mine when I get them serviced, but the guy told me I won’t hear any different in sound and can’t find know videos on TH-cam with someone who has done it would be very helpful if you could tell me if you can hear a difference am buying the Djm750mk2 to what do you think about the preamps in it also a guy from the shop told me I won’t hear the difference in mixing indoors only on big set ups what do you think?
Amazing review! I might hav missed it but can it run DVS?? Can I use my 1200s and serato control vinyl?? Phono out into this mixer. Link a m1 chip Mac Pro to the mixer and roll ? I use a xone62 or a djm 800 with SL boxes haha still … cheers ❤
So if I buy this does it mean I can hook up a laptop and start using the blank vinyl to mix digital music with this A9? And I don’t need all that additional stuff like the dvs? Box thing? Or am I wrong?
I've used the pitcheffect on a live stream while pretending to be an alien. That's not often. I can see it maybe being useful to pitch up 45 rpm records when playing them at 33 rpm, but I've not tried as I no longer have a pioneer mixer.
I know I am a bit late for the party but I have just one question. On 20:59 , you can combine echo, reverb and beat effects on the mic input. What is the order of that effect chain? Does Beat FX/echo go before or after the reverb in the chain?
Pioneer have stepped up, now will A&H? Is there a Xone 97 currently in testing? Im going to say…maybe. Any thoughts from the community? What is currently ‘The best’ mixer? And why? In no order… 1. Master Sounds 4 valve 2. Pioneer V10 3. A&H Xone 96 4. Pioneer DJM A-9 5. Your choice For what its worth im using an A&H Xone PX5 and while it sounds amazing, its got the connectivity of an addidas trainer.
So the 900nx2 has the "cue link" button which you use for the cdj 3000 features (example scrolling through with your finger to sample a track first) Just the regular master cue on the A9 work as the "cue link" like on the old 900?
The low pitch could be cool if the DJ wanted to add dark live vocals. Yes you can prepare that but it is an options and I have seen a number of live vocals where DJs have used there own voice processors.
The Pitch effect is gold on the Mitzvah circuit during kids speeches

And then everyone clapped
Denon mixers are gash
@@ChrisBlade. I'm not familiar with the word gash.
@@YouriHL it means not very good
@@ChrisBlade. AHA. I've never had any issue with Denon DJ mixers, even while mixing at ab outdoor party in the alps while snowing (light) at minus 10 degrees celcius. The last Pioneer DJ mixer (DJ S11) I worked on in the alps had malfunctionings all the time.
Well done Mojaxx 👍🤗
Best DJ booth was at Rex Club in Paris and Vega in Copenhagen. Worst one was at the end of a bar in Chicago with legs knocking the beers barrels all night long and back hurts, but the party was awesome !
Sounds absolutely and looks stunningly beautiful nice beats through the demo mojax….
Great video thank you, just what is needed for this product
You can turn their gains down and they will turn them back up - right now they would even know :D
I Would say that there is big improvement in Technical side but not so big in performance side.
The sound quality alone will make a big difference. It's hard to endure the NXS2 sound once you've used the V10.
Awesome mixer. Also, MC Conrad is incredible live.
Big up @Billy
be nice to find a few 900s on the used market now. dont think a lot of clubs even had space on the table for v10
I really dig the mic pitch
Dubai is definitely a party city. Lots of alcohol, captagon and prostitutes. If you have money there are almost no limits. 🌈
definitely a nice review. i feel like the A9 shouldve brought in the USB inputs like the S-11has on the back for DJ's who like to use HID mode (woulda been nice on the V10 too).
Me and my mate use the pitch effect to fuck around and get the giggles and that’s it
I noticed slip roll is removed from the FX section of the mixer.
XD
I think they have nailed it!
Stellar Content as Usual!!!!
Love the ability to select channel efx with push button Vs old rotary method
I just love that you demonstrated the pitch effect on the mic live 😂🤣😂🤣😂. I was crying 😂😂😂
id welcome that pitch function on the mic, be cool for the masked dj or to have a skizo conversations with your self beardyman style. may also be useful if your running something other that a mic into that input and wanna toneplay it a bit, still great to see those fx seperate from the main fx so an mc can stand to the side and do their thing.
Really wish there was some mic feedback destroyer like in the xdj-xz

Great review as always. I wasn't aware Pioneer came out with a mixer to succeed the Nexus 2. As usual, they did not disappoint. I am looking forward to playing on this once enough venues have it.
Why did they remove the CLIP light indicators on channel & master for this mixer?
Probably 'coz If DJ hitting red he doesnt care about it. One red LED is more than enough to say that something is wrong :P
:D Mojaxx you should use the Mickey Mouse Effect all the time! No just kidding. Super Review! thx
lost a lot of weight mojaxx, fair play.
Best Booth I have played on is tribe XR virtual reality pioneer kit. I can configure the booth to my liking, play back to back with my friends across the pond, and stream to twitch instantly with a custom avatar and visuals.

*Highlight of this review.*
I lost it during the pitch demo at 20:25 haha
Great review. So glad I got my V10 when I did. I came from a 900 nxs 2 and this doesn't seem to be very special at all. Serves it's purpose as an industry standard tho I suppose.
awesome presentation, thanks
I use a xone62 or a djm 800 with SL boxes haha still … cheers ❤
why wouldn't it?
Seems like a good mixer but I’m pretty shocked there isn’t a USB Hub in the back for HID mode.
That's a Serato limitation, with Rekordbox HID mode can be connected via Pro DJ Link so you only need one USB cable into the mixer.
@@Mojaxx yeah that’s true. Still shocked to not see usbs back there for any accessories like phase or other add ons.
the pitch on the mic I used a lot with MCs - pitch them down slightly at random to give them a demonic sounding vibe
Mate, I reckon the Mic Pitch effect could be your jam!
Thank mate.
So if I buy this does it mean I can hook up a laptop and start using the blank vinyl to mix digital music with this A9? And I don’t need all that additional stuff like the dvs? Box thing? Or am I wrong?
Question, if I connect the CDJ 3000's to the mixer via digital am I still able to use the XLR out from the mixer? or do I have to use the digital out?
@DJCITY is it possible to disable 1/3 2/3 on the BeatFX, it really screws up for ECHO FX.
The only thing I don't love is the new booth knob - it's low and crowded with the booth EQ
Great video, cheers 👍
And why?
In no order…
1. Master Sounds 4 valve
2. Pioneer V10
3. A&H Xone 96
4. Pioneer DJM A-9
5. Your choice
For what its worth im using an A&H Xone PX5 and while it sounds amazing, its got the connectivity of an addidas trainer.
Mojaxx you should do an episode with only the pitch on
yep, still keeping my xone96 thanks
well, looks like my 900 will be going on facebook market place soon!
