I've moved 8 times. Things rub when you move even when you wrap them. Things go missing. I still don't have my wedding photos other than a handful. I only moved about 30 miles each time. Things bump and rub against themselves even wrapped

There are certain items I wouldn't want a stranger to handle. I thought it was odd to let movers handle sentimental and fragile items not to mention personal documents. I think she broke her items hoping to get a nice payout to buy new furniture for her new house.

I had a pack-move-unpack last November and they did a fabulous job. There were two small scrapes on the side of my fridge and one broken glass, but I don't expect perfection in the people I hire. If you want to be sure about damages to your stuff take photos of you things before they're packed, take photos of moving day, and have things unpacked at the other end. If there's damage take a photo. And get moving insurance and a contract.

Never store anything. I used to work for an exterminating company. You don’t want to know the bugs and rodents that are sitting on your furniture. Most of the stuff stored isn’t worth the price of storage. It’s just old depreciated furniture. Get rid of it and buy new.

Both her and her daughter were watching them load and unload the items, why didn't they say something right away. What I believe happened was that through out the year, the lady or daughter visited storage unit to add or take out items and they or the mover damaged them when moving them in to their new place. As a former professional mover myself, there should have been an inventory sheet, listing every item, And logging down all discrepancies whether it's scratches, Gouges, broken knobs etc..before they went on board of the truck, Then have customer sign on it at origin & once more at destination, then inventory should have been taken once more by the 2nd movers..

This is why I own solid wood vintage pine furniture made in the USA. It doesn’t hurt it if it gets a few little scratches on it. I can move it full and just plastic wrap the drawers shut and slide a dresser down a flight of stairs without it breaking. Her TV stand is garbage particleboard. It doesn’t even surprise me that it got broken. Furniture like that is not made to hold up for more than 6-12 months without being moved.

Often you can’t get breakage insurance if they don’t pack it. That said, if you’ll cry if it gets ruined, move it yourself.
