Hi! I was born and raised in the U.S. state of Alabama until I was 20. I have been to every Canadian Province and the Yukon Territory. I love Canada! I made it to all 50 U.S. states by the age of 25. I still need to visit the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. I turn 50 in 2026 and I plan to explore both (within the next couple of years via wilderness canoeing trips) before I turn 50. ☀️

I've always been told that the stress on Newfoundland is on the last syllable, New-f'n-LAND. Rhymes with 'understand'
I'm relieved you didn't say 'New-FOUND-land' like I've heard so many Canadians say! Equally cringe-worthy is "New-f'n-l'nd" almost sounding like the country Finland.

It’s “Kuh-Beck” or “Kay-Beck” in an english accent you should do the first, but if you want to do the actual name with the real pronounciation it is “Kay-Beck”. This is because of the accented “E” being an “É” which makes the “Aye” sound. Thank you for this video. Love from Québec!
For Quebec, the QU is sounded like it is in French (a K sound, never a KW sound) by locals, whether they are French or English speakers. Also, both syllables should be sounded quickly (French vowel sounds are normally short in duration) and with an even stress pattern (do not stress either syllable - lexical stress doesn't exist in French and Quebeckers therefore sound the name without it).
Just two quick even syllables. keh-bek (in English) or ké-bek (in French). You might even hear it said so quickly in causal speech in either language that the first vowel almost disappears (k'bek).
The é vowel sound isn't quite the same sound as English's "ay" (although people sometimes transcribe as the closest approximation) because you don't widen and then narrow your mouth to make é (it's basically a clipped "ay" with zero mouth movement, with all the sound coming from the back of the mouth). That mouth movement is why almost all "kay-bek" English pronunciations tend to sound drawled out and extremely over-stressed (and thus no one local uses them even if it might seem closer to ké-bek at first glance).
A KW or an strong stress on either syllable sounds odd to folks from Quebec, kind of grating on the ear like hearing the FOUND in Newfoundland stressed and sounded out as "found" does to Newfoundlanders.
For anyone wondering what lexical stress is, it's the way specific syllables in a word are stressed to make the word sound right along with the under-stressing of the other syllables. It's why "convert" is sounded two different ways in the following sentence: As a zealous convert to his new faith, John may try to convert you. Stress the first syllable and it's a noun. Stress the second syllable, and it's a verb. French never does that (just like English doesn't use grammatical gender - it's just not a feature of the language).
But spot on.
This is the best description of the pronunciation of Québec I have ever seen, doing away with persistent myths. Anglo-Quebecers, aside from older diehards, all say Kébec, not Kwuebec. Kébec is after all not only the French pronunciation but also the St. Lawrence Iroquois pronunciation--and they created the word!
Also, it's not true we always stress the last syllable, and Québec is one of the many instances when we don't. Why put stress anywhere when you can open une bouteille de vin et casser une croûte et rigoler entre amis. ⬅no stress 😊🍻🍷🍹☕🍝🍇🍓🌰🌹🎶😄
@@michellesheaff3779 (Smiling) It seems my age is showing. I am probably describing a slightly old school Anglo-Quebecker style of speech. I grew up there, immersed in both cultures and a good chunk of my social circle is from that community but school and work has landed much of my crowd in Ontario (just barely, kinda-sorta - the Ottawa-Gatineau metro area). You are describing an even more bilingual pronunciation style than what my friends use, which is very cool and shows the evolution of the way people speak. (grinning) I am familiar with the lack of stresses. French is my mother tongue (but I learned English young enough to sound native in both).

British Columbia: Capital is Victoria, important city is Vancouver (where I'm from)
Alberta: Capital is Edmonton, important city is Calgary (rivalry with Edmonton)
Saskatchewan: Capital is Regina, important city is Saskatoon
Manitoba: Capital is Winnipeg, important city is Winnipeg (or Churchill but it's smaller)
Ontario: Capital is Toronto, important cities include: Kingston, Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Niagra
Quebec: Capital is Quebec City, important city is Montreal
Newfoundland and Labrador: Capital is St. John's, important city is St. John's (or gander if you like come from away)
Nova Scotia: Capital and important city: Halifax

Québec is not a French word, it's an Algonquin word which means "strait". The equivalent in French would be "détroit" just like the city in the USA. Québec is pronounced kay-beck with both syllables equally stressed (no stress) or a light stress on the ending syllable.

funny story: got married in BC. Goverment in Irland thought got married in Columbia (Soth America). The thing was I had to wait for 10 mins before she asked me while she was verifying my certificate. Seriously, young people so dump sometime :D Just ask girl!
