Actually, more Serbs died or were banished from their homes in WW2 and WW1, so that sentence is also referring to those periods. And even before that, there was quite some suffering. And it's not just foreigners, everyone needs to have something to identify themselves with in Serbia.
Serbia pre-WW1 was a rough history because it was stuck right in the middle of so much conflict. Taken over by Roman’s, Byzantine, ottomans, Austro-Hungarians (at least vojvodina was). Pretty brutal
