Definitely one of the best EV channels on youtube, bonus you are from the UK. Love how you have a stable of cars you can just nip to go and try things on in tests like these.
Mountain bikes get in easily into the Y or the X if you take the false flat floor out, the bike just need a little more depth. The S has this due to the lower boot floor.
9:26 - YES! Seeing the i3 in the background early in the video I went "oh, come on, that *HAS* to fit in the i3, I hope they try it!" Pleased to see you actually did! (I carried quite a few "surprisingly large" things in my i3 over the years before replacing it with a Mach-E.) Also, you remove the lid for some vehicles - I'd be willing to bet it would fit in the Model S with the lid removed, too.
Seriously one of the best reviews of practicality of teslas. Till now I was dead set on two model Y, but I'm starting to reconsider and maybe an 7 seat X and S. Thanks a lot guys !
Excellent test and illustrates the relative capacity of each car nicely. Love how you dragged the passer by into your testing at the end - the dog was a very willing participant - unscripted and fantastic improvisation which is why your videos are so good. My daughter is moving house this weekend and has the equivalent of 20 big boxes of sh*? so it's a white van for me. My Tesla Model 3 Performance just wouldn't be up to the task.
@@RSEV Yes, it did. Thanks for asking. The white van was somewhat slower than the Tesla and no regen. It was filled to the rafters with her tat. God knows what will happen when she buys a house. I might need an artic then.
Good vid👍 Take-away: when you go to look at a new car, take a mountain bike, selection of boxes, and some big kids. Try-before-you-buy! Love the way your “8 year-old” had to help his own leg out of M3 @23:30… I am reminded of a time when I picked up a full height fridge freezer, still boxed, in a 2004 Honda Jazz. It did fit, the hatch-back fully closed but The driving seat was almost fully forward and my knees were up round my ears! Thankfully only a 3 mile journey but the discomfort did save me the delivery charge!
Brilliant work guys. I have a Model S that I use for mountain biking and I love the convenience. However, I have recently been considering also buying a Model X as i thought it would be even more roomier for carrying mountain bikes and camping. I was very surprised to see this test. Thanks for this awesome practical demonstration.
I love watching your reviews of all things EV’s it’s fascinating to see the technology evolve. One thing that would be really cool to see, is how mobility aids fit in cars: folding/rigid manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters for example! One thing that is incredibly hard to get real world visual reviews on cars that fit mobility aids! Love your videos and thank you for making such interesting and in depth content! 👍👍
Thanks for watching, and that’s a good idea. Need a willing volunteer to come with some items to test and give their verdicts. I was involved in converting one of the first Tesla in the uk to hand controls and it worked brilliantly and owner loved the access and boot space for wheelchair.
Excellent video - really interesting, particularly with the bike and doggo. For bikes, the Model Y is an absolutely fantastic car (arguably one of the best on the market). The towbar upgrade will take 3 big, adult bikes with a decent carrier. Plus it has roof rack capability. So it should be able to take 5 bikes, 5 passengers, plus a load of frunk and trunk luggage for a biking trip. The Model 3 is similar, but its towbar is more weight limited and is realistically better for just 2 big bikes (plus 3 people in the rear is a bit less comfortable than the Y).
Absolutely informative video from you guys again. A reliable source of information. I’m currently comparing a second hand X versus a Y and this certainly helped. Looking forward to the Y review. Keep up the great content. Thank you.
I wouldn’t go nowadays for a Model X, old technic, slow charger, a lot of problems as its not new and of course it is a huge car. :) hard to find a parking spot for it ;)
@@MacsElite I chose the Model Y. Collected 24/03. Sadly having pre and post collection issues with vehicle. Considering it’s return before 14 day limit. A difficult period to be honest. Hope others have a better experience.
On the Y box test you didn’t take into account the deep glass roof on the tailgate - pretty sure that white box could have got in as the glass tailgate is designed to accommodate two human heads (for when you have a seven seat version) try it again! ;)
Enjoyed the video because getting a bike in the back was the reason I chose the Y over the 3. When I purchased a mtb, I found the same issue. The front wheel has to come off. So glad to see the model S can take a road bike and mtb with ease
I've been trying to work out if my 2 Golden Retrievers would fit in a Y or if I'd need to stick with my Velar when along comes Sasha :-) Test drive in a Y is now booked. Thanks so much!
Great video. It’s a bit annoying the rear rakes so much as that definitely eats into the practicality on the Y and even X (think about sliding suitcases in, the rake forces them in flat)!
I really do like these real world tests. Total volue is something you can usually manage and estimate from pictures and it kind of is of not high value. Most car magazines use stantadized boxes of small dimensions and it just is of low value. But cube (big box), plane (flat tv, bike) etc are much better as even if you can have cube meters of volume you might not be able to fit the item because of small doors etc. One test you are missing is long and thin item. Like 5cm * 30cm * X meters also just 5cm*5cm*X meters. So thin ladder like object, or pipe.
Ha-ha, you get an enthusiastic LIKE for the effort you undoubtedly put in with the various loading capabilities - who would have known that an S could outdo an X with the odd bicycle? And the fact that your dog could walk under the seat of the Model Y. 😊 And thanks to Sasha the Retriever who was a trooper. 👍
If your concerned about the boot lids closing onto something pull closed by hand the lift systems are designed to allow manual closing, no need to pop a glass. My Model S takes my full suspension 29er Mountain bike with both wheels on. Its a squeeze and passenger seat has to be halfway back. Bonus info the new Roadster also takes a 29er full suspension mountain bike if you remove the front wheel not bad for a Hypercar. Yes I did buy the Tesla Roadster Model as its CAD derived and yes I did mock up a copy of my mountain bike, but if you flip the rear seats down and Tesla does what it normally does and sticks to making production as prototypes yep mountain bike in the back of the Roadster. Sash is the star of the show shes beautiful and what a useful insight for dog owners, kudos to Sash and her owner.
Raven with adaptive can be even softer than regular air.. so that’s my favourite for sure. Model 3 and y are hard. Planning a video all about ride and suspension comparisons
Would be interesting to include car seats. Your kids at those ages would also be in car seats. So I guess the models X with long box wouldn’t work as the car seats wouldn’t fit next to each other! Useful video. Thanks!
Really useful comparison. My current nissan leaf fits a bike embarrassingly easily. And the car I want to replace is a golf estate, thich is bigger than any accessible EV on the market. A Passat is much bigger. Drives me mad. They're all massive, but all smaller than a golf inside 😂.
In the 5 seat Tesla Model X can you fit a spare tire in the sub-compartment of the rear trunk? You need approximately 28” x 28” x 6”. Thank your video. Your practical storage tests are very useful.
Very cool. When I get mine, I’ll try the boot with suitcases, as I’m a taxi driver, so have lots of airport runs. I’m just down the road from Stansted airport & the gridserve great motley charging station 👍
I made my wife sit through this video and she came up with a very perceptive observation. It’s all very well for the gull wing back doors on the Model X opening in a tight space, but how does the driver get out?
I don't have one but I'd imagine adults know to open the door and be careful in close spaces. Kids just swing the door open lol also when putting in kids and babies you'll need that extra space.
What do you mean? The driver would get out of their door. Unless you are saying ‘what happens if another car is parked right up next to you, so you can’t open the driver’s door?’…. In which case, I would say ‘Why do you think this is a problem with the Model X, and not one that would be experienced by EVERY car on the road?’
The practicality of load areas is important. There seems to be more trim and the wheel arches intrude for the full height which shouldn't be necessary. I would love to see a slighly longer Model X with standard doors and wider boot space. Also the seats should fold flat, why don't they use the old flip up/removable rear seat base method?
I wasn’t going to click on this video because I wasn’t to interested. I’m glad I did though, very entertaining. I was missing some Benny Hill music during the bike test.
So bigger cars have more space - brilliant! LOL But importantly you don't need to get a Y, or X which look like a M3 / MS in a hall of mirrors at the funfair, to get a practical car. An older model S might be the way to go for us private buyers in the UK that need a bit of space
Very surprised that the bike didn't fit in the Y and X. I have a Skoda Kamiq small SUV and my road bike easily fits without taking a wheel off. Granted the MTB has wider handlebars than a road bike but the bike in the video seems to have pretty narrow handlebars itself. Maybe if you turn the front wheels inwards?
Great, because you have so many cars you can compare the various versions in one go, useful dog information as we have a M3 at present but it does not really work with my large Labradoodle, with her wedged between the kids on the back central seat. MY seems to offer the solution, mud and dogs inside the front of the car is not great.

All probably suitable.
