Another thing to do is walking the line 20 metres or so to the left and right and try pulling the line, sometimes that can free the snag or pull the line off the snagged rock.
However, in this situation Roger’s second hook was trapped. “The release the line” strategy works really well if the fish swims under the snag, not in this situation. Walking away to the right & left could’ve helped, but pretty obvious he was screwed, and knew it.
Think about it so was that fish screwed - left tethered to a snag - single hook, barbless, rotten bottom, lead release etc rig would be more humane, so many bites no need for 2 hooks anyway. You can be a great fisherman to watch other than I find it a bit grim to see so many fish killed in your videos and fish deeply hooked bait fishing on heavy tackle. We have very few salmon left in UK, bass are recovering after a ban on landing, mainly catch and release here now. Fish stocks seem much better in Oz I hope what you all are taking is sustainable but nevertheless it seems a bit old fashioned and less sporting compared to leading anglers like John Fish Locker Henry Gilbey. Standing there with a twitching snapper in your hand after ripping its guts open is not a good look or lesson
No worries Roger, I’m 75 and looking back on my life we fished of the rocks, I had 2 string lines one was a green colour string, that was the thicker one, and a white string, both wound on a bits of wood, we would swim out to the furthest rock climb up on it, swing/spin the line around our heads and throwing it out a few yards, no life jacket, no shoe rock crips, no wave watching, except if it was storming, and looking back, no brains either, I live in the central west, just the sound of the waves on your videos makes my heart jump. Thank You.
Good show Roger , I fish for snapper off rocks in New Zealand , to avoid fish swallowing the hook , I use circle hooks , that hook the fish in the corner of the mouth, 80%of the time. Saves a lot of undersized fish .
A big hello from South Africa. I'm 70 and only stated to fish about three years ago. No sea fish but manage to land a few Bass. I just love watching you videos. Regards, Gerhard
Loving the rock fishing series. A suggestion would be teaching people how to berley effectively and not over berley. I see too many fishermen feeding fish these days instead of liberally berleying and creating an attractive scent in the water.
Great fishing , its sometimes hard here on island as fishing is 24/7 all year long, fish are very, very clever here, so fishermen have be more extra clever to catch anything, I see you already using all the skills we using here on island, and still here it is very hard to catch fish if the sun is up... early morning and getting dark is only good chance to catch fish, but sometimes if there's storms, it brings huge big tree logs and huts from Indonesia and good untrained fishes, which our local fishers will deplete in a week, as mentioned 24/7 is fishing here with no off limits and restrictions restrictions regulations
May I suggest that in you're instructional vid on rock fishing you suggest that people spend a few minutes observing the prospective fishing locations to monitor wave action and when fishing to have an escape route incase of rogue waves. footwear and cleats need to be worn along with a life jacket. fishing with a mate is a good idea and having a good length of rope at hand may come into its own should someone fall or be washed in. the importance of leaving the rock shelf clean/or cleaner than found, especially remove discarded line/hooks etc. just a thought - great vids - love watching you. I've picked up lots of hints.
Thanks Roger, what I learnt is that dolphin pt is a red hot fishing spot, and most likely , everywhere else in a 50 mile radius, I notice many rivers, lakes & estuaries. Which I guess is where most of your fishing is done . Definitely heavier line for hoicking techniquei s a must . Keep baggin' 'em , tight lines
You mentioned something that I always look for. I'll jump on google earth before I go and try and find a spot where theres weed beds reef and sand areas. If there's no sand I'll take the sinker off and float the baits down unweighted.
Floating bait with one circle hook on a mono leader tied to braided line with a fg knot. Let the line float on the water whilst keeping the rod tip low to the waterline. Keep the bail open and with one hand holding the line between your thumb and index finger. When there's a customer, let him run off with the bait and then flick over the bail and slowly raise the rod tip. For the method I prefer mono leader over fluro because you're not running a shock leader, the mono will stretch a bit more than fluro to act similarly on smaller fish
Good day mate! I'm a fishing fanatic and newly arrived here at NZ and went fishing few times, so it's really fan watching and learning at the same time with your videos. Thanks Heaps mate
I live on Cozumel, an island in the Mexican Caribbean, lots of rocky shoreline. Often there is sargassum weed suspended in the water. Do fish feed below the weeds? Also depth, its hard to tell the depth of the water, how can I tell. There is so much reef, it is better to fish suspended, do you have any rigs for suspended fishing off rocks? Thanks for all the great videos.
I fish rocks a lot.. if you get snagged, walk from side to side pulls and sometimes let line go.. also use slidding sinkers..Slack can let fish move and tear off snags
Also now 70 and only just starting to seriously fish due to pressures of young life buying house kids divorces x 2 and married again 22 years, I find my self with many hours of own time so from now fishing will be the main hobby plus putting food on the table, I'm finding your video's a real pleasure and education. I also just love the outdoor life and camping g so it will be a combination of fishing and short holidays camping. What more does a man need in life.
Understanding the effect of wind on the waves is key in rock fishing. Even when the waves are up and the wind howling, you can often time find a safe place to fish - did it today and managed to bag 3 luderick 🤙
You are the best teacher ❤ I learn fishing by watching your vedio 😊 And I use your stinger hook it's the best of the best 😊❤ Can't thank you enouh Cheers Thank you so much
Hi Roger, love watching your videos. I'm in SEQld and I so wish we could get that many fish of that quality in a session here. What a great place to fish!
I watched three young men get washed off the rocks and drown on the other side of the bay at Malabar. At the peak of high tide the water conditions underwent a radical change with wave high increasing by a factor of X2 to X3. Half an hour before and after the high tide, water conditions were flat and quite safe. Conditions can change very quickly and you can never take your eye off the water.
Hello Mr Osborne, beautiful video of the edge of the rocks. A pleasure to watch your family video on this Saturday, May 20. Can I use the setup dropper loop rig system with the loops. Do you think it’s effective? Thank you 🙋♂️🙂👍💪.
Thanks for all the fantastic and educational videos Roger. I've only recently stumbled across your channel and wish i would have found it ages ago. I'm a very novice fisherman who only gets to fish a couple times a year and generally has no success, i've quickly realised it's mostly down to wrong having the wrong bait and rig for the location. Know that i have a little knowledge i can't wait to go and give it a try.
another option is to loosen the line and give it slack hopefully the fish can get the snag out, and then slowly reel it snug not tight and then give it a quick jerk, if not, then yeah gotta break it. very informative vids i must say. would like to see a vid on how to read teh beach areas. etc. especially where theres current. also do you really have to set teh hook that hard? fish are diff down under if so.nm you answered it late in the vid.. makes sense
I often bring a second rod. It Seems like heavy tackle for the average size of fish. Considering the snags and a good amount of fish bites a single hook would be ok. Still, I find your video very enjoyable. Thanks!
Dolphin Point - Beautiful spot, we love grabbing fish and chips from Burrill Lake and enjoying them at the car park there!! Many thanks for your videos!!
Hey Roger, have recently gotten into rock fishing myself after years of beach and estuary. The questions Id appreciate learning more about are: When scouting new locations, what do you look for with water depth (what’s a good minimum depth for species like salmon, Bonito, kings) and terrain? Love the content, thanks?
You keep talking about mulloway but I have never seen you catch one. Do you have a video of one. To show us. I watch from Tennessee in the USA. Thanks for the entertainment.
Like your videos Roger, you always seem to catch a feed. I would like to see the times when you do miss out in a session so the rest of us don’t feel so inadequate lol
Hey Andrew, I'm the video gal and have been since the birth of the channel... and I'll testify that I can count on one hand how many times Roger has caught nothing in a session... haha sorry (not sorry) to disappoint!
Great tips especially love the tip of how to get sinker off rocks before reeling in. Going to try that stinger hook rig on my next fishing trip as well
Roger, great video safety on rock fishing a definite must ,also how NOT to loose sinkers In rock fishing, also fish species which love to inhabit around rock structure
Hi Roger, have you considered circle hooks, a lot more fish friendly, also when you hooked up while you were on, why didn’t you give slack and let the fish try free you before you broke your line, one more, ever considered fitting a bionic finger, really improves your cast
I always use 3 piece fishing rod 2 or 3 hooks when I fishing on the rocks i never ever do that when my hook stuck on the rock with fish on the hook I have to make the line loose so the fish can take the Hooker a way from the rock I love to watching your show
Hello Roger, How are you? You are really good teacher thank you. I actually learn a lot from you. I hope you have a video how to clean your fishing equipment after you finish? And how to put oil in fishing reel ?
Been a rock fishing angler for 40yrs cliff decend with ropes and using a 18ft rod one of the issues i have seen is that people do not come prepared no water getting into cliff holes that they cannot get back from either tide swell or smiply got into a spot without room to move if caught a big fish when bringging it up there are 100s of ways it is a danger to anglers who are not experienced
another very enjoyable video, thanks, how about some tuition on making various fishing g rigs for various situations and fish types with breaking strain line recommendations for a returning fisherman that needs solid guidance.
Thanks for the videos, Roger. I'm learning a lot about salt water fishing. I've done a lot of fresh water fishing, but working out the beaches and rocks has been a bit hit and miss. I'm looking forward to heading out next time with some good techniques 👍
Really appreciate the videos, Roger, especially as an expat who hasn't been fishing in Australia for ages. Brings back all sorts of good memories. Hey Rodger! Great video. My suggestion would be to make some videos on luderick fishing off the ocean rocks! I've noticed there is alot of green cabbage bait on the rocks where you are fishing. Would love to see you catch some luderick or drummer.
Hi mate, Many thanks for sharing videos which are great. What is the Beach where you recently did beach fishing from looks great. Keep up the great video Rodger. Des
I was standin a metre off shore on rocks and a freak wave went over my head and drenced me. Lucky I wasn't swept into sea. Walkin back from sea, I didn't see the large crevice between rocks due to water and my foot went into it makin me fall. I didn't btreak any bones , but three runners of me rod got smashed.
Solid effort mate, i've been really enjoying videos. It would be great to understand the basic profit and loss you have found with your style of fishing. For a new starter its easy to sink a lot of money with little results. It would be great to understand the what the $$ look like after you have mastered the game. ie if you were to buy the fish from a market
Before simply breaking off when you get stuck while on with a fish, try releasing some line and often times the fish will release the snag.
Another thing to do is walking the line 20 metres or so to the left and right and try pulling the line, sometimes that can free the snag or pull the line off the snagged rock.
I totally agree. A little patience will see the fish release your line 70% of the time when left slack. Especially hood sized fish.
You need to know the Mildura flick
However, in this situation Roger’s second hook was trapped. “The release the line” strategy works really well if the fish swims under the snag, not in this situation. Walking away to the right & left could’ve helped, but pretty obvious he was screwed, and knew it.

Definitely keen to see one about rock fishing safety. Particularly about the different types of pfd's you'd recommend. Cheers for the quality vids
Another great video, Roger!
It would be great to see a video of how to make your long distance casting for snapper rigs!
Thanks Roger, I've been learning a lot with excitement. I'm getting confident I would be catching something everytime I go out fishing.

Please roger put the locations on your comments that help us find new spots thanks mate
What a great session and some great instruction regarding rock fishing and safety.
good job Roger! I'm in the USA, but, I'm learning quite a lot about ocean fishing. thank you for that. Ed
Great stuff Thanks Roger
You should visit Namibia some time we got nice fish including missive BREAM.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Awesome video as always. As someone who have never rock fished, excited to learn it from you Roger!
Learn to not face your rod upto the sky and pull back so hard like rodger does....
When you're casting it would be great if you could show an arrow over the screen that shows where the bait has landed. Would be really helpful.
Hi again, yes in future videos we adopted this suggestion so you will find more recent videos circle where the bait has landed. Very good idea. Cheers

Shout out to your camera person too, super well made and edited vids as always 👌
It's a lovely scenic spot your fishing.serenity now.😂✌️..a nice big occy leg will attract a big snapper if any around.

Could you do a rock fishing video with lures soft plastics and metal lures please
I like using a spoon sinker so it rises to the top as a bring in my line. Great episode

I'm not sure about your running Paternoster rig. Pkease show us again, especially the sinker set up to the two leaders.
Awesome video Rodger with some lovely fish. Well done. Thank you sharing your knowledge on fishing. Much appreciated. Kuben, South Africa.
Thanks Kuben, our Snapper are similar to your Musselcracker
do you prefer mono instead of brade line and why, and what sort of foot wear do you have on the rock fishing o and the fish cake recipe to mate

Beginners setup rod /reel/ rig etc for rock fishing.
Can u show us the Riggs used for rock fishing for all different types of fish please 😊
great video mate, true aussie
Thanks 👍
Great vid! Nice catch!
Hi Roger, can you talk about needing rock hopper plates, and floats or not, to prevent snags in the rocks
Another great vid. That fish is stuck on a rock now and your spool could do with some line Roge.
Hi Roger, have you considered circle hooks, a lot more fish friendly, also when you hooked up while you were on, why didn’t you give slack and let the fish try free you before you broke your line, one more, ever considered fitting a bionic finger, really improves your cast

Hello Roger,
How are you?
You are really good teacher thank you.
I actually learn a lot from you.
I hope you have a video how to clean your fishing equipment after you finish?
And how to put oil in fishing reel ?
Sir how many hooks you are using and singer weights
Really amazing your viedios

Good learning videos.. new fisherman here.. how do you know what 'feel and type' of fish it is? (can not connect to Instagram)
Awesome love your stile good fish
fantastic roger,,,,,all the best
Really appreciate the videos, Roger, especially as an expat who hasn't been fishing in Australia for ages. Brings back all sorts of good memories. Two questions - do you simply despise sweep as most seem to do? When I was a kid my dad and I caught them in the violent white water close in, and enjoyed eating them as well. Related question - do you ever resort to good ole cungy as a bait? Looking forward to a trip to Oz and some beach fishing with my brother!
Hey Rodger! Great video. My suggestion would be to make some videos on luderick fishing off the ocean rocks! I've noticed there is alot of green cabbage bait on the rocks where you are fishing. Would love to see you catch some luderick or drummer.
Respect bro......fish onn ....nice snappers..!
This is awesome roger! If you have Alvey gear, can you please fish it off the beach/rocks? 🙂
Awesome video. Top quality info and advice as always.
Appreciate it!
Hi mate, Many thanks for sharing videos which are great. What is the Beach where you recently did beach fishing from looks great. Keep up the great video Rodger. Des
Wairo Beach
Hi Roger, could you do a video where you only use chicken as bait?
رجل متواضع ..ويعلم الآخرين.. شكرا
Also, I have a 70's one piece beach rod(tailor) I've never used. Should I give it a go off rocks?
Great video Roger,
Could you make a video about how you react If small fish steal your bait? I use all of your rigs and the result is always the same…

Hi Roger, thank you again for the video. What shoes are you wearing? I need to get those :)
