I demonstrated this to my friends when I was pretty drunk the other night by putting cat poop in a bowl of water and some cigarette butts, then taking a swig. It worked but needless to say I was a little ashamed of myself when I woke up.
unvmematt wtf did you do that
Good review, thanks. I bought a Lifestraw a while ago for an emergency bag. I am still going to keep it, but I have since found the Saywer brand of filters. They won the Backpacker's Magazine award in 2012 I think. Same concept as a Lifestraw, it's a compact hollow filter membrane filter, but it filters to 0.1 micron with a 99.99999% of all bacteria, and 99.9999%; of all protazoa. Lasts for about 1 million gallons, it is back washable. MSRP is $35.
Wow definately buying a couple. Seen them in pics but didnt realize how well a product they were.
They have these at Wal-Mart for $17 and change! Grab one now! These look amazing!
Thank you I have been looking for an easy carry system plus others. This is a good way to start for sure.
This is what I have read, and it makes sense to me at least. Take it with as many grains of salt as you need....
The original idea behind the "shelf life" was that it was most likely to be used in places where it is left outside most of the time, and the concern was UV deterioration of the plastic on the outside.
Again, I have READ, that they no longer put an expire date on them, they just warn to inspect for cracks or other damage to the housing. My "new" one from Amazon which I received last week, DOES have an exp date on it, but the mfg date is mid 2013, so maybe the exp dates are not on the 2014 models, I don't know.
As far as the innards go, when it is kapoot, you will no longer be able to draw water through it.
Thank you Sootch for your great efforts in bring this, and the many other videos.
Good question. The reason I say turnoff is because as a "stored" item the shelf life is too short. However, if I used it daily(which I wont) it's not a bad deal at all. Also it can't be used for 3-5 years with constant use, as said in the video it filters 264 gal water. Great product, but just not like, say the Berkey bottle which has a 25 year shelf life. IM just thinking long term bro. God Bless.
I just got mine today! Haven't tried it yet though, I got the idea from your video so thank you!
This may be way off the subject but when you said, Life is Water, it's true in a lot of ways, thirst, Noah Ark, baptism. When you said that all this hit me. I also have the straw. Thanks
Lifestraw is an amazing product, already saved thousands if not millions of lives. Which, by itself, is a level that very few products of the industry can even hope to achieve.
I have a small question though, would it work with salt water? If so, how well?
Cheers.
I like it for several reasons, with that said, the shelf life is a turnoff for me. OTHER than shelf life 3-5 years, this is a winner and would be nice to have! Thanks for the trusted product review Brother!~~John
You said it has a 3 yr shelf life, but what if you are a prepper and store it unused in a bug out kit.......does this mean i have to replace it? I read on amazon that they took that expiration date off......... looking at the renovo and the sawyer also. Can you do a update???
PHOTOS-N-GRAPHICS I was wondering same thing?
I love my Lifestraw. I keep mine in my bugout bag.
One question I have (I just bought the Life Straw), is that the instructions say you need to prime the filter if it is dry (you haven't used it yet during your hike, etc.) by submerging it in clean water for 20 seconds before using it in unclean water. Is this actually necessary? If so, I assume you would need to prime it at home in clean water following their suggestions, then keep the caps closed so it doesn't dry, and then you can use it when you find water on your hike. But what if it dries out? Or what if you don't have water you can stand it up in? It seems in your video that you were able to simply put it straight into the water and start drinking, and the unclean water would prime it. Could you explain more about that?
I had the same question. From the Lifestraw websote:"When you use your LifeStraw Steel for the first time, both stages of filtration are completely dry (after storing, for example), and it takes a little longer to prime the filter. We recommend that you hold the filter vertically in the water, with the water half way up the filter, for 30 seconds before using. This will help get the membranes moist and make it easier to pull water through."
i bought a lifestraw 4 yrs ago..taken it to cuba twice, brazil, all over the USA......love it...4 yrs old is it still dependable? thx karen
The paperwork that actually comes with the straw states that it has a 5 year shelf life based on the manufacture date (printed on a sticker on the body of the straw) as opposed to the 3 years that is on the website. It does state that this is if the straw is kept at 50% or less humidity and a temp range of 50F and 77F. But then they say once you start using it, continue to use it until it stops working so I'm not sure where the 50% humidity lands there in determining a new lifespan... I have sent the company an email about the shelf life and temp because I have some at the house, but I was going to get one for the vehicles--but where I live I cannot come close to those temperature limits.
Oh, and the MSRP is $19.95 not $24.95. All of the sporting good stores in our area have them for $19.95 (and no sales tax or shipping). This included big names like Cabella's and Bass Pro.
Bryan Steward I'm reading up on the Sawyer systems others have mentioned below. If the info is true, I'm impressed. Thinking of getting a larger Sawyer for the house even though in our area it could be overkill. Still, 1,000,000 gallon lifespan in one filter means never having to replace it. Assuming the full 1 gallon per person per day, that's over 500 years of water. If I want to get silly and say each person with cooking and cleaning uses 5 gallons a day it's over 100 years. That'll do.
You blow it out after each use so this keeps it from clogging too quickly... In theory.
Yep, good point, like I said this is a great little device. And there's nothing wrong with redundancy when it comes to having drinkable H2o!
So why did you spit out the water from the creek? Seemed counter productive. Oh, I just bought three to add to our supplies.
also vat19.com sells them.
how often do you need to prime it? just when you get it? before use each time? i can't find an answer to this anywhere
I have a small stainless steel "Berkey" water system at home but I have to get a "LifeStraw" for my back pack.
Will this filter salt water? Thinking about grabbing a few for we I go offshore fishing.
P Jones no
@monarchstateprepper You can't filter salt water like that. If so, you would need a high energi consuming device that's highly complex. There is a reason for why no cities uses sea water as a watersource.
I wonder why the filter only has a 3 year life? It seems to me that if you stored one for emergency use that it would have a much longer life. I guess Lifestraw has to put some sort of limit on the guarantee but I would be willing to bet it would last much longer than 3 years under the right storage circumstances.
According to their website, it no longer has a shelf life.
"shelf life" can you clarify this? Does it mean it is date stamped? OR once you start ACTUALLY using it, it can go 3 years? Or can I keep it in its packet 10 years then one day start using it, and it will then last 3 years? Anyone know?
brilliant filter..this is a life saving solution especially for poor people, who live near polluted water.
What about sending some to Detroit. Will it work with flint's water issues?
Do you happen to know why it has a shelf life at all? As far as I've been able to tell most water filters last for decades or longer in storage. That shelf life deters me from buying a Life Straw for preparedness storage. Pay $20 or mare and then chuck it after 5 yrs? Don't like that idea.
Is there a reason why you spit the water out after sucking it up? Did it taste funny? Great review!

Big fan
great peace of kit i have one in my first aid kit and on e around my neck it has never let me down any hunter fish man or hiker should carry one a must if you ask me
The self life on these has been extended to five years. Yay :)
Do they make anything like this that will allow you to filter saltwater so you don't get sick?
Will it float when filled with water as well as it being un-primed?
And can you replace the filter?
When you don't have the time or ability to boil this is a mobile device to keep you on the move if time is of the essence such as an emergency in order to get help for your partner.
I saw a video on a product called lifesaver they have a water bottle and a jerrycan water filter system my question is why do I only see one or two prepper channels doing reviews on it is there something I should know about that product? the reason I ask is because it seems like the end all be all for water filters.
With the Sawyer, you don't have to suck the water directly to hour mouth from a dirty source. You fill a collapsible bag with dirty water, and squeeze the filtered water into whateveer you want. Bottle, cook pot or drink directly.
just watched a video from Survival Russia. He tried to use it with clean water and the tube clogged at once......has it happened to you? Not sure how to rely on this now.....Also how do you clean this? My hiker pro got mold inside after a couple of use.....I pumped through some water/chlorine tab combo but the problem still persists.
if you use it, then store it. would you get veils desease.
Do they make a gravity water filter that's portable? I'd prefer that.
Could you do a review of the HTI Hydropack, Expedition & Seapack? They look like pretty good products for purifying water in an emergency. Think that they use osmosis so there's no moving parts and no filters to clog.
When do you know when the filter can not be use anymore?
Thanks for the info.
Anthonytotherescue- just bc a crazy guy sipped some nasty water using this and said it tastes good doesn't mean it does, also I was trying to see how small it filters out and protects you from. If this should only be used in dire emergency other wise should I still boil my water or used iodine tablets
Hey please take a look at the sawyer SP 181 its in my opinion "the" best waterfilter
Nice advertisement video for Life Straw. Did you check any of the statements about removing 99.9 % of bacteria or just take Life Straw's word for it. Have read many many reviews on this product. Many are critical the straw. Your review has only praise. So there were no down sides to the product?
I've had mine over 3 years but never used it. Do you think it would still work or should i buy another one? I do also have the Sawyer water filter witch can filter over 100,000 gallions of water.
@A I thanks I Will
Great product for bug out bag! Glad you did a review to get product out there. Used with uv pen it is a complete system! On a side note.... I left a comment for you to check it out a year ago.... Thanks
I use the Sawyer Mini. But I would boil if I can before ever using filters.
Once it gets wet how long dose it last? Crud growing init?
Think I'm going to get 2 of them bc I do travel. Thanks for the info Sootch and powerhousephg
What pack did you have at the beginning of the video. I am looking for a new Ghb.
alright so I can't seem to find the sawyer water filtration system in Calgary anywhere but I have found the lifestraw. Should I just get the lifestraw or order the sawyer online? Not needing it anytime soon but is it worth spending the extra money?
I would order the Sawyer its much nicer imo.
It's cheaper on Amazon amzn.to/1mJZYG8
You can buy life straws mountain equipment co
+the gaming cow "at"
Is it threaded for water bottle ?.
Cool vids! Can this filter salt water/ocean water? Thanks.
Will it filter ,and make sea water good to drink.
No it will not filter saltwater.
Amazon is having a flash sale for $14 on life straws. Ends in an hour. Doubt anyone will see this in time
(6/23/2014 - 4:42pm EST)
I do live in desert area. Does it filter viruses, microbes and to how small
"Water is Life." xD Are you going to trademark that? Haha.I feel like I heard that more than once in this video.
Well this doesn't work for mineral ions (e.g. heavy metals - Lead, cadmium) and small molecules. So don't try it on factory waste water.
Can you use it in the ocean
Sawyer squeeze has a 0.1 filter better than a lifestraw and can filter 1 million gallons.
Good stuff.
Thanks for sharing.
Lovely I have one and I love it
what happens to it in 3 years that it expires?
i'd say get some of these and some berkeys.. best of both..
Not to be gross but does life straw filter urine?
is it good for salt water?
GOOD QUESTION, Is It?
TheColonialGamers probably is but I am not sure
the particles are too small so no it also doesn't work in pools with chlorine also
***** that sucks :(
No salt particles are to small to get filtered
How long does it last
Does it filter salt water?
Are you able to change the filter?
+Connor Millett
the cost to replace entire unit would probably be the same as replacing parts..
does it work with sea water?
no.
What is that packpack you have?
does it work on moonshine?
These are great. Thanks for the video...
I need one
But do I trust it ?
Bloody amazing!
"When it just stops working", so when it finally stops working, will I have a mouth full of dirty water? How do I know?
you get a mouthful of nothing is how i understand it. it will not allow water to flow through it.
This, or the Renovo?
The waters good and clean, no after tastes. Says that after spitting it out.
need help finding a product like this but filters salt water
Salt is too small so it will go through almost every (if not every) filter. A filter like that could easily go to a couple of hundreds/thousands dollars.
The best way to filter salt water is to distill it. You can search videos (there are many of them) on how to do it.
Kodak72 yes I'm am partially deaf. I was blown up in Iraq and lost almost all my hearing. I also left comment right before it said the spec. Kodak 72 you really had to respond to my comment also I said never mind after the fact I left the first comment. So apparently you didn't pay attention, but ill be the better one and not leave a rude comment like you did.
Can it handle extreme cold weather?
Apparently freezing ruins the fiber membrane.
Amazon.com also has these
How many does it cost
Dont try on oil.
Oil isn't water now is it?
I am going to get me one of those.
Who made this?
dose it clean saltwater
No!!!!!!!!!! Salt is salt!!!!
No, it will not desalinate water. Cheers
Note for preppers, outdoorsmen, and enthusiast: This will not, I repeat, NOT filter out microbials such as virus and bacteria. ALWAYS, ALLLLLLLLLLWAAAAAAAAYS boil your water before you drink it, even if it is completely muddy. Water may be an essential for life, but fire is always your first priority.
It does filter out bacteria. check their websites. It also removes some viruses. The guy in the video even says 99.99 bacteria get removed. Thats what the website says as well
You need to go back and listen around 3:25. He talks about the different bacteria and such that it filters. Thats the whole point of using filters like this.
it wont filter out all bacteria, just so you all know, boil your water then use this straw with your boiled water is my suggestion,
As jeremy morrissette said, not saying it for my health though, do what you want.
If it doesn't filter out bacteria and/or virus, what is the point of this product? In addition, I suspect this product would not filter out the industrial contaminants in my area.
I keep my Lifestraw in my compact BoB.
Y'all are getting ripped off if you're only getting 1,000 litres. The Lifestraws i bought filter out 1,000 GALLONS
I have to buy one.
awesome video, Thanks
I need one
it was created by the guys at vat19 its there product not vestegard francine
Actually cat19 does make MOST of the products but they do sell other stuff too
its vat19 not cat19
Oh whoops auto correct. And you know what I was talking about
i know i was just checking
Okay
SOLD !
this does not work on sea water.
why did you spit??
Hahaha it was odd that he spit it out... I guess he didn't want to "risk" testing it. xD I guess he's not that confident after all spitting it out. haha
He spat to show you he was actually drinking the water.
man if it's flowing water in the wild like that its 100%safe as long as you're not near sewers or something people too afraid of nature. although I'm not saying this is a bad product for some nasty sewer water or something.
+Mead371 just because it is flowing water in the wild doesent mean its safe. An animal may have died or contaminated it with fecees upstream making the water below that unsafe.
