Those may be “just 90 minutes,” out of a (long) lifetime of honorable service, and he is no doubt competent most of the time, but what about that 5, 10 or 25% of the time when he’s not fully there? He has declined visibly in the last 3 1/2 years. How much will he decline in the next 4 1/2 years? Take it from a 72 yo, old age tends to accelerate. He may not be competent to serve in a year or two, or possibly, to tell the whole truth, worse. It’s a conundrum if there ever was one! On the one hand, he’s the best qualified candidate ever, with tremendous experience, and he is, with one glaring exception, liberal, and progressive. Furthermore, he is honest, with certain reservations (Israel). Nobody can match him. On the other, he is getting old, and not just chronologically. His body, including his mind is failing him. He should quit while he is ahead, for his own sake as well as ours.
