I've always believed that the strength of a community can greatly magnify the joy and depth of one’s faith. When you practice and love your faith surrounded by like-minded individuals, it brings a unique vibrancy and fulfillment to life. This is something I feel we, as Catholics, we once had when we lived in small, tightly-knit communities where the local church was not just a building, but the heart of our daily lives. ❤
I come from a Mexican background; my parents were raised in a quaint small village in Puebla, Mexico. There, Catholic churches are abundant, almost every 5-10 miles. Each sub-city in the area is named after the saint of its parish, and the entire community unites to celebrate the feast day of their patron saint. It’s said that in Puebla, there are 365 churches, one for each day of the year, symbolizing the church’s central role in village life. Everything revolved around worship and community gatherings, like feast day processions, were a regular, cherished part of life.
However, in today’s world, especially in large cities and sprawling suburbs, this sense of a united, faith-based community is hard to find. The lack of a common religious theme in these places makes it challenging to live out one's faith in communion with others. I've observed that in areas like Utah, the LDS community enjoys this type of close-knit, shared experience, which is something I find deeply admirable and yearn for in my own Catholic faith.
This longing has led me to seek out similar Catholic communities in America, where traditional values and communal worship are still the fabric of everyday life. I'm in search of a place where I can move and be part of a community that shares my beliefs and traditions. If anyone knows of such Catholic small towns, I’d be grateful for the recommendation, as I wish to rediscover this level of community and faith-based living. ⛪️

I had a very similar upbringing and it was amazing. One of the things the Catholics can learn from Mormons is how to be a peculiar people. Growing up in a community that had a distinct identity was a gift not a burden. We do not have to conform to the world.

As a Latter-day Saint, I wish we did it even more.

It’s a breath of fresh air to see a departure from the tired trope of trying to frame the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saint communities (or really any religious community) as cultish and repressive. We’re normal people, and a Latter-day Saint upbringing is usually a pretty great deal that produces Christ-like model citizens.
