At 5:00 he literally goes to wipe a tear from his eye. Forget whatever you think about how he looks while playing - you couldn’t begin to understand what it’s like to have that level of passion. By the time he’s 30 seconds in, mentally - he’s left the room. To love you must feel, and what you’re seeing is a man feeling music
I'm not a fan of Lang Lang, but this performance is so appealing to me - really creative voicing, phrasing and planning with much tonal imagination. Such an artistic, beautifully crafted performance.
Beyond mastery. Lang Lang is a rare talent and sensation. We are so lucky to have him. Not an easy Chopin Etude. I have studied it. It can take a life time to play like this.
If you guys are going to insult langlang, please, PLEASE upload a video of you playing this piece first. I've read his books, and he has reasons for his facial expressions and that's who he is. His smiles aren't "fake" or "dumb", they're genuine because he feels happy when he plays, which is what music is all about! He's had a really tough past, so don't judge him off of one unreasonable thought you have. Seriously. If you really don't like langlang, then WHY ARE YOU EVEN WATCHING HIM?!
Rachael l totally agree with you, why are these people even bother listening Langlang if they dislike him that much? Went to his concert in Miami last night, he is so graceful! Simply the best!
Surely it's a perfectly valid comment for a non-pianist, or a poor one, to comment on which virtuoso they prefer, and why? Otherwise, you are condemning all critics to unemployment. (This may not be a bad thing...)
Totally dont understand all the thumbs down? he was playing a beautiful piece perfectly... and for him to be where he,s right now, took decades of practice and dedication. Bravo Lang Lang
I think this is the best interpretation of this Etude I've heard. I've listened to dozens on TH-cam. His speed and accuracy is paramount. My personal opinion is that Etudes were written as "exercises" to develop technique and virtuosity. I feel that many play this Etude more like a Nocturne. Here the study demands this technique and virtuosity in the middle part and Lang Lang plays it with remarkable ease. Of course the sweetener is the beginning and end parts (the parts I can play lol).
The expressions which the pianist performs with his face I believe is the engagement with your soul and your body. We must listen and try to feel this harmony also. Wonderful! Virtuoso!! Congratulations !!!!!!!!
I've never heard this Chopin Etude before, but I already fell in love with it. I'm usually not a huge fan of Lang Lang's interpretations but this piece suites his style perfectly. It often sounds like Lang Lang takes his music for granted, but he plays this piece like he'd know that it would be the last time that he could ever play the piano again. From sincere remorse and vulnerable sorrow into inner peace through acceptance. Sorry that I tried to put down on words, as they give no justice :)
i love his way of expression...slowly drifting into the music, its just like dancing with the stream of notes flowing right out of the piano. he becomes the music rather than only playing it and he can actually make music just by using his current emotions, and adjusting how the tone is going to be and instantly create magic
Some lovely playing especially when he plays pianissimo. His style here goes back to an earlier age of piano playing when the performer was as important as the composer. Nowadays the style is to play straight with few or no personal touches whatever. At least you cant call Lang Lang boring. I dont like everything he does. Some find his facial contortions disconcerting but he is a tremendously gifted player.
This was one of the very best performances I've ever heard of this piece and I am NOT a big Lang Lang fan. I must give him a lot of credit for this one. Bravo!
Lang Lang squeezed at least 40 pieces of lengthy classical music into his body and mind, so he said during an interview in Czech Republic. I think his body movement and facial expressions are a manifestation of how he visualize a piece of music, and plays it. Why should anybody doubt his sincerity by saying his expression is fake. Come on, memorize one lengthy piece is already for most of us, let alone 40 pieces. Be fair to him, please!
I just came back from his concert today from Nashville. It was so impressive. I just love his performance on the stage. After the concert, he was getting autograph to the people who purchased his CD. I saw him right in front of me even though I didn't purchase a CD. He seems very nice.
Lang Lang's upbringing was straight out of Dickens! Horrible isn't even the word. I can't imagine a more inspiring story than his road to international acclaim and super stardom. He deserves every single solitary accolade he wins. Truthfully, he is the embodiment of Liszt! His performance of Liszt's Don Juan Reminiscences is breathtaking and probably exactly how Liszt would have played it.
Absolutely beautiful... I can't imagine this piece played any closer to my own ideal of it. He played with such tender care that I could no longer hear the hammer hitting the string... only the music, the pure music. What a king of Chopin he is!
Just an amazing artist is all I can say. His expression in his music is fantastic and his skills are breathtaking. I don't think I've ever been so awestruck by a musician before. THIS is genius.
OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!"!!!!!!!!!! Give me those hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can feel the emotion is about to exploding in my heart....OMG.............OMG.......OMG is the only word I can say....OMG......
lang's performance is not just a piano performance. The notes paint a picture and it's almost tale telling. He has me convinced he's seeing a story unfolding in his eyes. Unbelievable!
Words cannot express what is.. and who is or how the heart of expression is displayed purely and exquisitely beautiful as pure creation.......... no words...
The performer transfers feeling and energy through the sound as well as through their facial expression and body movement, just like a conductor does. I wound rather watch a pianist like lang lang than a stone-faced pianist anyday. This piece of chopin really brings sorrow and profound sadness. If you did not have tears at the end then you did not get it. Excellent job by Lang Lang!
I've been following LL's career since his student days at Curtis Institute of Music here in Philadelphia when he studied with Gary Graffman. His appearances in Philadelphia, where he makes his home are less due to the committments of international touring, but subsequent performances have revealed an artist of ever-increasing maturity and depth, while still maintaining the the charismatic showmanship for which he was first noted.
Lang Lang closes his eyes and doesn't care about anything except playing the music the best way he can and we should do the same: just close your eyes and LISTEN to the music.
I have one of his albums, it was absolutely incredible!! He takes you on a musical journey with him throughout the full range of emotions that the composer poured into each piece. He creates an emotional turbulence that I haven't heard from any other pianist. He is certainly one of the greatest pianists of all time.
this rendition really captures the salon music tradition of chopin's era, lang makes it sound spontaneous and fresh, as if performed for the first time
I tried for the first time to play this piece today and it was a completely different experience than hearing it! It is incredible how much this piece affect you when you play it .. I almost began to cry O:
Lang lang played like it's the last performance of his life. I really like how he put all his efforts in playing this piece eventhough he's already a genius
emotion contains the word motion.,,,and the movement of the artist visually as well as the moving sounds and their various textures contribute in perfect synthesis to the overall phenomena of emotion
I think he wiped off a tear at 5:00, because in one frame at 5:15 shows a trace of a tear when the light hits just right. I already was moved to tears in the beginning, for some reason, the pianissimo and voicing just pulled my heart out.
If you are distracted by his facial expressions, just close your eyes. I think the music as he plays it is beautiful. This performance was especially sensitive and pure.
his playing: surreal, breathtaking, and simply indescribably beautiful! Anyone who says his faces ruin the music are those will never be even a tenth as talented as lang lang. And the few talented ones who condemn him are even more so because although you can play, you'll never enjoy the music you make.
at the end of the piece where the main theme is restated, his interpretation is absolutely brilliant. I love this. The chromatic variation could be slowed down but it's impressive that he can play it like that.
Lang lang is one of my role models i read his biography just a few months ago, and im so inspired by his story! I've been playing piano for several years now, and im only 13...but im not that good.... but i'm fascinated by classical music.
I don't know. I understand why you would say that, he does have intense facial expressions and body movements, but it's not fake, in my opinion. He just lives in his music. He is the music he makes. I like it, it speaks to me, wether it is commercial or not does not matter. It feels genuine.
Passo horas ouvindo o piano de Lang Lang! Desde o meu primeiro encontro com o talento e a sensibilidade deste fenômeno que eu a cada oportunidade que tenho de acompanhar seu desempenho mais o admiro.
Alike a little wild ray of light, he shines on everyone by his means of expressing his joie de vivre, creative spirit and great sensitivity. Incredible when he makes a connection when he triggers into motion our lever of yearning, of solemn wonder, of dread, of thrill, of joy.
He played this same etude as the 1st encore when I got to see him play. I can't believe how quickly he plays the middle part with all the diminished stuff.
At 5:00 he literally goes to wipe a tear from his eye. Forget whatever you think about how he looks while playing - you couldn’t begin to understand what it’s like to have that level of passion. I'm not a fan of Lang Lang, but this performance is so appealing to me - really creative voicing, phrasing and planning with much tonal imagination. Such an artistic, beautifully crafted performance.
Lang Lang is a genius, his interpretation is brilliant. He is extremely sensitive to harmony changes.
As far as I Know, nobody in the world , at the moment, can play this Chopin Nº3, Op 10 in E major, so well , as Lang Lang.
pollini? hello? lol
Krystian Zimerman!
Beyond mastery. Lang Lang is a rare talent and sensation. We are so lucky to have him. Not an easy Chopin Etude. I have studied it. It can take a life time to play like this.

Omen!
When you are the best on the planet at what you do, and you do it, then whatever you did, must become the correct way to do it.
He is the closest relative to ling ling. We have to look up to this dude
I am a huge, a big fan of Lang Lang, he's the BEST in world!!
Totally dont understand all the thumbs down? he was playing a beautiful piece perfectly... and for him to be where he,s right now, took decades of practice and dedication. Bravo Lang Lang
Bravo,Lang Lang, and thank you for your musicality and authenticity.
Very calming. Thank you.
I myself has played this piece for a few years and the interpretation he gave at 4:27 really astonishes me. Great work from Lang Lang!
Like a cello
Best interpretation of this piece. I cried at the end
心が音に出てる。
練習量とかもきっとすごいんだよね。
才能も大いに関係してるけど、きっと努力もしてるんだよね。
何年たっても追いつけないぐらい、上手!
惹き付ける音楽。
言葉では表せない。
Thankful for this video beautiful bravo!!
This is, for me, the best version of this piece. I have his 3CD but the way he plays here is just magic
Lovely playing.TY for posting.
I was just about to post my own critical "pros and cons" review when all of a sudden I was moved to tears. Speechless.
Try to find anything less than a devastatingly pure mastery of the piece and piano.
Truly incredible touch. Don't look, just listen.
I think this is the best interpretation of this Etude I've heard. I've listened to dozens on TH-cam. His speed and accuracy is paramount. How can anyone dislike his expressions. They’re not only genuine but flat out unintentionally hilarious. I LOVE LANG LANG!!!!
i close my eyes and listen to what he's playing. he's awesome
The expressions which the pianist performs with his face I believe is the engagement with your soul and your body. We must listen and try to feel this harmony also.
Wonderful!
Virtuoso!!

He said many times his idol is Horowitz.
You've really never heard the Tristesse??? 😲
I really love to hear Lang Lang play this piece. When I am older I want to play as well as this.
He is a really great musician.
when the first note comes out, I knew it was going to be verrrry beautiful interpretation. Nice one!!
speechless, just let the music play over and over again, and im in heaven
Such a joy to listen and watch... absolutely amazing!
Simply perfect. His voicing is just so sweet and amzing!
It's called having a connectoin with the instrument. He made it his own and was dreaming while he played, Bravo!!!
i love his way of expression...slowly drifting into the music, its just like dancing with the stream of notes flowing right out of the piano. he becomes the music rather than only playing it and he can actually make music just by using his current emotions, and adjusting how the tone is going to be and instantly create magic

amazing performance
I remember seeing him when I was very young live...and still I think he's simply unreal, and loves what he does!
Lang Lang squeezed at least 40 pieces of lengthy classical music into his body and mind, so he said during an interview in Czech Republic. Excellent!
Lang Lang's performances are full of expression. I admire it a lot. He always being conscious about the Mood so much.
Lang Lang's music is making a difference in the world .
Wow! Lang Lang played the Tristesse so magnificently with such moving expression. An absolute joy to listen to!
I really really liked the calm parts. Too much pedal on the middle part. I love Lang Lang :D
Just an amazing artist is all I can say. His expression in his music is fantastic and his skills are breathtaking. I don't think I've ever been so awestruck by a musician before. THIS is genius.
Bravo Lang Lang!
This is my favorite rendition of this etude. Lang Lang is showing what Chopin's music is all about.
OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!"!!!!!!!!!! Give me those hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can feel the emotion is about to exploding in my heart....OMG.............OMG.......OMG is the only word I can say....OMG......
You are a piano poet caressing the notes.
Thanks for this video.
I love how he squeezes out every bit of expression from like the music like trying to get water out of an old moldy sponge. I cried.
Technique isn't everything. Emotion is what makes pieces like this as phenomenal as they are.
lang lang number one !
I was lucky enough to be at this concert ❤
His talent and sensitivity are imcomparable, like The Times said, he's really The Hottest classical music artist on planet!!
lang's performance is not just a piano performance. The notes paint a picture and it's almost tale telling. He has me convinced he's seeing a story unfolding in his eyes. Unbelievable!
absolutely brilliant. Beautiful colour, warmth, texture and the interpretation was excellent.
This is the best interpretation I've heard of Estudio #3 "Tristeza". Amazing. I'm touched.
To anyone who may dislike Lang lang's play style, you have to appreciate the publicity he has brought to classical music
omg,,,, this music made me cry.....very touching of his performance......bravo!!!
Words cannot express what is.. and who is or how the heart of expression is displayed purely and exquisitely beautiful as pure creation.......... no words...
Hey I never herd of him until today a friend told me about him,as now i listen ,& here him play is just incredible,amazing..
A true genius..
Breathtaking ability and emotion in his playing

No matter how hard i try, i just can't achieve that sort of pianissimo that simply melts your heart, but Lang Lang does it superbly!
I've been following LL's career since his student days at Curtis Institute of Music here in Philadelphia when he studied with Gary Graffman. His appearances in Philadelphia, where he makes his home are less due to the committments of international touring, but subsequent performances have revealed an artist of ever-increasing maturity and depth, while still maintaining the the charismatic showmanship for which he was first noted.
guys, everyone has his own way of appreciating the music, this is his way, why not close ur eyes, it is the music we are talking about.
Lang Lang closes his eyes and doesn't care about anything except playing the music the best way he can and we should do the same: just close your eyes and LISTEN to the music.
No words... only a heart as pure / expression of what lies inside yet reaching out to touch so many / exposed....no words...

He creates an emotional turbulence that I haven't heard from any other pianist. He is certainly one of the greatest pianists of all time.
Absolutely phenomenal. I thought Horowitz's recording of this was the definitive one, but this is amazing. Thrilling. Stupendous. Wow.
its just amazing lang lang interpretation, you can come with a story since the begining of the piece, its just amazing
Multumesc din suflet pentru aceasta interpretare ! Lang Lang , esti un pianist extraordinar !
è fantastico accarezza il piano e ne fa uscire una musica che fa vibrare l'anima.
Complimenti e grazie maestro Lang Lang!
this rendition really captures the salon music tradition of chopin's era, lang makes it sound spontaneous and fresh, as if performed for the first time
Un génie musical ,un visionnaire,un prodige de sensibilité et de compréhension de la partition.Et quelle palette sonore!
i saw lang lang last year in Los angeles...it was amazing
i love this piece so much! this interpretation is just out of this world. i'll learn from this.
I tried for the first time to play this piece today and it was a completely different experience than hearing it! It is incredible how much this piece affect you when you play it .. I almost began to cry O:

Best performance of that piece I have ever heard
I heard Lang Lang recently at the Kennedy Center in Wash DC. It was absolutely mesmerizing.
wow this is fantastic, he's so much more relaxed than usual, great sound
As a musician I listen to the best and Lang Lang is among the best . I also have facial expressions when I play the piano
OH MY GOSH. THAT ENDING! It's not too much and not too little. It's done perfect!
Exceptional performance!!!!Thanks James for share. Huggies Perla.
his playing: surreal, breathtaking, and simply indescribably beautiful! Anyone who says his faces ruin the music are those will never be even a tenth as talented as lang lang. And the few talented ones who condemn him are even more so because although you can play, you'll never enjoy the music you make.
The great thing is that he's not just another of those souless oriental musicians, he really understands what he's playing.
Awesome! TY James.
at the end of the piece where the main theme is restated, his interpretation is absolutely brilliant. I love this. The chromatic variation could be slowed down but it's impressive that he can play it like that.
Lang lang is one of my role models
i read his biography just a few months ago, and im so inspired by his story! I've been playing piano for several years now, and im only 13...but im not that good.... but i'm fascinated by classical music.
why he can make a usual melody become so touching?
I already cry when he just play
I don't know. I understand why you would say that, he does have intense facial expressions and body movements, but it's not fake, in my opinion. He just lives in his music. He is the music he makes. I like it, it speaks to me, wether it is commercial or not does not matter. It feels genuine.
I know! The way you put it was perfect :D

Such heart. Such soul. It is Lang Lang at his best.
