Thanks for the shoutout and more importantly, THANK you for finally trying the thing that I bought my Xone:96 for a year ago and still hadn't gotten around to do myself (even though I was 99% sure it would work!). SCIENCE!
Hi there! Amazing setup!!! Am i only one on this planet who cant connect erica techno system on xone96 or record to ableton. It is my first device and i cannot find any video. Only way i could connect was to mono channel c or d on xone 96:(...If someone knows how to simply answer please do❤! Thank youuu!
@@mariomontana8616 Hey! Well I guess when you say connect, what exactly do you mean because there are so many ways to think of. And when you mentioned Ableton, that adds even more questions. If you’re trying to get audio out of your modular rack, you either need to patch all the voices directly to the Xone 96 or patch all the voices into the mixer in the Erica Synths system, and then patch the output of that mixer to the Xone 96. Either way to do this, you’re going to need to get cables that are 1/8 to rca. You have to patch the xone in stereo so you’ll need 2 for each channel on the Xone and some stables to make your Modular Signal split to stereo. Watch Florian Meindl’s TH-cam video he does on this if you don’t follow. Then connect the zone to your computer with a USB cable and open ableton. If you don’t want to deal with all that drama, get a ES8, ES9 or Motu to connect to your modular voices, then connect one of those over USB to computer to get to Ableton. If you’re interested in learning more about this stuff in detail, I have a Patreon called The Sound Lab. We demo and talk about all of this stuff over group zoom sessions. @Trovarsi. Thank you for sharing the vid on the Xone 96 2 interface same hybrid setup. Now I can setup my mine just like yours. I'm trying to use Ableton Live/ Xone 96/ Akai Force/Machine Studio. If they're a better way that you know off, please let me know. I want thank you from the the bottom of my heart for the help you have provide it. Thank you again.
Hey! Happy to hear the video is helpful. Your setup sounds nice! If you’re using those machines in standalone this setup should work great with what you’re trying to do. Depending on what you’re doing you could almost run the whole project off of Ableton and use the hardware as powerful controllers. You have a lot of options. 😀
The USB interface is bi-directional on both USB 1&2. So, there is literally nothing to be gained from using one as the in and the other as the out. It can effectively be achieved with just one of the USB soundcards.
Thanks for explaining everything! What if I have few analog synths, arturia beatstep pro as sequencer, for sure Ableton and Xone 96. The question is: how to synchronise all of this together??
Interested in your audio signal chain into inputs 1 and 2 of the xone. Are you using an output module or are you going straight out of the modules at modular level and adjusting the gain on the xone? Nice video as a Xone owner and modular head I have been looking to play with this.
I'm taking the Kickain module directly into channel 1 [1/2] on the mixer and Channel 1 [3/4] on the mixer the output from the Performance mixer, so one channel is a direct module patch. I have RCA to 1/8 cables that I found on amazon. The Kickain has stereo out so I can patch the L/R in to the Xone. If you are using a module that's a mono signal and want to patch that into a channel the Xone, then you need to get janky with it lol and use a stackable cable out of the modular so you can patch the left and right of the RCA into the Xone mixer. I've done that and it works. just shove the stable somewhere that it isn't touching other modules. :)
Great video! I have connected 2 vinyl turntables to the xone and having the send returns on 11/12 which works for the effects. However when trying to listen to the recorded set or just listen to a track from ableton it does not send any signal to the xone. I hope that your usb2 method works. I guess i need a second usb cable for that right?
awesome vid! im assuming you could send incoming audio from the modular into ableton return tracks no problem for further fx processing (i.e. if you had return tracks in your ableton project), right? if so, where would the processed audio from the return tracks be outputed to? thanks for the great knowledge! definitely thinking of this mixer for further down the line (:
I'm not 100% sure on the return tracks but I would think so? I would have to try it to confirm. Definitely if you drop effects directly on the audio tracks.
@@Trovarsi sweet! well if you ever experiment with it would be super interested as to what you find! unless i get my hands on a xone 96 first then ill let you know for sure 😈⚡️ haha cheers and thanks for the great content! 🙌
Return tracks on the xone don't send audio out of the mixer over USB, but they can receive audio. Send 1 and Send 2 send audio over USB from the xone, So you could set up an fx rack in ableton and send audio to it from either send 1 or 2 on the mixer, then have that fx chain return audio to the mixer in retun track A or B. It's super flexible. Also the sends on the mixer are post fader, vs pre-fader for tracks 1-4.
I’ve not done this with xone but you will be able to route the sends from ableton to any of the output channels on the 96 - or to master then send master to any channel on 96 - I do this with DB4 and control ableton fx with the midi mode.
I have a similar setup with Ableton and Xone 96. I just use one of the interfaces on the Xone. You can have audio from USB 1 and Audio to USB 1 on the same Ableton track passed from and to the same cnannel on the mixer. For example, audio from modular through track 1 (USB 1) , into Ableton and then back onto the same track 1 on the mixer. Selector set to USB 1. I have this set up as an aggregate device with my ES-9. Works like a charm. What is the advantage of using both interfaces on the xone 96 over just the one? Maybe I missed something. thanks
It's been a bit since I used this exact setup but I do remember something with it being direct audio and not able to control the levels? There was something that wasn't working for me. I would have to repatch it and circle back with you. Maybe I missed something? Also, with the ES9 you are still using a second interface. I guess it just depends how you want to route audio and modular. There are so many ways to do it. I just didn't want to give up rack space for an ES9 in that specific setup. I have, use, and do really like the ES9 as well! :)
If you want a one to one mapping of input to output this is cool - if you wanna group inputs to one output track and still have all the channels on output available the dual sound card kicks in then - I’m using a single sound card mixer (DB4) and wish it had 2 sound cards haha
@@sacrosyncd4202 the DB4 is great too! I have it and I could never find a firmware for the new macs with m1 chips. If you know of one please let me know. I love the DB4! :)

At this point I gave up on my dream and I still run Catalina on an I9 Macbook haha
@@sacrosyncd4202but would that swtup still be possible with just the one interface? Wouldn't that achieve the same thing?
It’s weird cos im facing latency while im trying to record everything from beginning, I’ve tried so many ways but I ended up on clock box :( I mean when i write some patterns on ableton and then playing my modular at the same time live, sounds okey but when it becomes to recording ,its couple of milliseconds of latency from my modular that it makes it sound not sync . Any suggestion for this? Also thankyou for this helpful video!
You can try a couple things depending on how you are sequencing your modular, are you clocking your sequencer with Ableton or are you sequencing from Ableton? Also which sequencer are you using? If your sequencer can receive midi clock then you can dial in the milliseconds in the preferences. That's probably the easiest way. Another way is using track delays on the Ableton audio tracks. Also check the options in Ableton and make sure you have delay compensation on. Try that and see if that works.
Also… I’m using an external synth, connected via Line input. If on that channel I select USB 2 as you do, I lose the source. Honestly I can’t get it. I wish I had know it before getting this mixer to be honest.
Hey! I just started using this setup again and tried a few other things BUT for you try this: Let's use channel 4 on the zone = 7/8 input. First, go into Ableton preferences and select the Xone for both the input and output. Activate all the pairs for both input and outputs. Channels 1 thru 12. Next, create an audio channel in Ableton. on this channel - Select Audio From: Ext In 7/8 and Audio Out: Ext. 7/8. Next, Connect your synth to 7/8 on the Xone and then turn the selector frto whichever Xone usb # that you selected in the Ableton preferences for the INput interface. You should see the audio metering on the channel in Ableton and hear the audio come through on Channel 7/8 on the mixer.
