Painful Mistakes in EPHESIANS in The Passion Translation (Dr. Darrell Bock)

  • Open description for time stamps. Welcome to my Passion Project! Where real scholars test the wild claims of Brian Simmons about his new Bible, The Passion Translation, so that YOU can know what’s really going on with this suddenly popular new Bible version.
Today's video features Dr. Darrell Bock and his thoughts after reviewing the book of Ephesians. Scroll down for links to Dr. Bock's paper. This same link will have ALL the reviews and papers as they are published. You should see a total of 5 uploaded by mid way through January. After that I will need to wait a while for more scholars to finish their papers and do interviews. I hope to have it all done in the next few months. What was my goal with this? I want the people of Christ to know the truth about this "translation" so that they can love what God has said without Brian Simmons altering it in unjustified ways. However, in the course of researching for this project I've uncovered some other very concerning things about Brian Simmons' teachings including false prophecy and various extreme claims regarding his own spiritual experiences. I'll be sharing some of this in future videos as well since I have realized that he is not just styling himself as a Bible translator but as an inspired Bible interpreter who is going to release a last days transformation in the people of God so that "everything that can be said about Jesus can be said about you". Yeah, it's weird. Stay tuned to my channel for more info on this in the coming weeks.

    0:38 Today's video synopsis.
1:41 Who is Dr. Darrell Bock and why is he reviewing TPT?
2:50 Why it is not truthful to call TPT a "translation."
4:09 If Dr. Bock was to evaluate TPT as if it were a paraphrase what would he say?
5:15 The CENTRAL issue of Simmons misleading people about using Aramaic in Ephesians.
8:14 How Brian Simmons abuses homonyms which he says are a secret that God gave him.
12:32 TPT changes the focus in Ephesians 1 from God to us. It is too anthropocentric.
13:59 One example of a where Simmons adds a whole sentence to the Bible.
    without italics or footnote.
15:50 In Eph 2 Simmons gives us more authority than we have in this passage.
17:32 Another passage where TPT changes the focus from God to us.
19:30 Are we getting what Paul really wrote in TPT version of Ephesians? Spoiler: no.
20:38 A number of times Ephesians is changed in TPT from speaking to tho corporate church to individuals.
21:48 How a mistranslation in Eph 5 vs. 11 will can mess up how we apply the Bible.
23:25 How TPT limits what Ephesians is saying about marriage roles.
26:13 Brian tries to use "the Aramaic" to justify his alterations but Dr. Bock says this misleads the reader.
27:17 How TPT mishandled the passage on slavery in Ephesians.
28:45 Another example of taking the issue of slavery out of Ephesians with an unjustified appeal to "Aramaic" that doesn't exist.
    30:40 The danger of TPT.
32:08 Dr. Bock comments on the claims that TPT website makes.
32:46 Dr. Bock reacts to Bill Johnson's quote endorsing TPT.
33:37 What paraphrase Bible would Dr. Bock recommend?
34:13 The challenge of translation and paraphrase and where TPT fits in that.
35:19 I ask Dr. Bock to comment briefly on The Message. I'm still not very happy with it ;)
36:29 Does TPT distort the Bible even though their web site says they don't?
37:26 Should TPT be in bookstores, Bible app, and Bible web sites?
39:10 Did God give Brian Simmons secrets of Hebrew and Greek?
41:37 Brian lacks real credentials and claims supernatural gifting. It could be true but it sure seems false.
43:13 What would Dr. Bock say to someone who loves TPT?
43:43 Dr. Bock's podcast (which I recommend as a resource).
46:11 A preview of the next interview.
47:07 Special "cameo" by Brian Simmons.

Exactly what I was about to write as my comment myself!
Brian is Joseph all over again : with apparitions of Jesus and angels to give him supernatural powers of translation for languages he has no clue about, claims of undue persecution by “the learned”, who God now apparently despises.
The result of his translation being also equal to Smith’s own: a work of fabrication only to be believed through the subject feelings of the reader.

Unfortunately, many need to repent for slandering a man due to theological prejudice of which they are too reluctant to acknowledge. Brian has definitely brought interpretive elements to his work, and the guest himself has done exactly the same thing with his interpretation of Brian. Arguments from context and what constitutes too much "me" are arguments fully entrenched in theological prejudice. This is another Brian commenting on Brian.

I got the Passion Translation for Christmas a few years ago. I heard about it through a Jenn Johnson message. I was in a charismatic church for six years. There were things going on that I didn't agree with like speaking in tongues and the stance on healing. One of the associate pastors also claimed to have gone to heaven four times, to hell once, and had been translated several times. Back in March I watched American Gospel and it sent me down a rabbit trail to seek the truth. I finally decided to leave my former church last Sunday. A few days ago, I came across Mike's series on the Passion Translation and my eyes were opened. This morning I put my Passion Translation in my grill and set it on fire. The truth will truly set you free.🙌🏾🙌🏾😊

this is why i'm always so agitated by some of my fellow charismatic churches. being in God's presence and speaking in tongues is not a bad thing (Paul instructs us in 1 Corinthians to EARNESTLY desire the gift of tongues). but it's when the enemy sneaks in and fools people that we start to sound crazy. no, i don't think that man has gone to heaven and hell and all those things. BUT!! it's personally my own belief that tongues and supernatural healing are real and alive. not all charismatic churches are like that (mine especially is not. we do not condone TPT). you were at a really, really misled one. id hate to see someone's relationship with God resort to a religious stiff relationship with Him because of PEOPLE and their false teachings. just stay open. But Jesus said the Old Testament was all pointing to Him, and he backs up that claim with so much evidence that I think you have to be totally unwilling to admit the possibility, for it to still be deniable. I'm not a Jew so I'm not speaking for them, I was raised totally New Age, but Paul does point out the whole point of the Law was to make us see ourselves as sinners, hopeless to do anything about it, so we would understand why the Gospel is such utterly good news. It was often emphasized that special personal revelation and experience outside the bible was normal and that you were somehow less spiritual if you didn't experience these. So when Brian Simmons has grown up with these traditions we shouldn't be surprised if he truly believes God gives him "secret" insight into the greek which has never been revealed or was simply "lost".

I fled the church when I read in the Bible that tongues was not the greatest of gifts and how it was being abused by the early church. Later when I research the AOG, I found it was created out of racism because the early Pentecostals were mixed racially. It was established as a "White" brand of Pentecostalism. It also was a works oriented church, as least mine was. I am so glad I left.

Is there any chance I can get book titles and/or websites that used in your research. I’m trying to research Pentecostalism and, all the books I’ve been able to find are by Calvinists or Cessationists. Which basically means that they are rabidly anti-pentecostal. @@tinamemering7795 The information about AOG being formed as a racially separatist organization I found on the internet. I think it is well recorded in the organizations founding.
The fundamental attitude anyone should have is humility. The information about tongues that determined my mind comes from the Bible itself. Don't rely on people's opinion you read in books. Rely on the Bible. 1 Corinthians 14:1-40 is a good passage. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 is also important. From what I can tell, it is a valid spiritual gift, but Paul was writing about it being abused. I believe it is abused today by people who want to externally appear to be spiritual.
It is also used as a way to "certify" you are saved instead of learning to trust God at his word that you are saved by trusting in the work of Jesus's life, death and resurrection.
The other thing I grew up believing is that sin after salvation caused me to lose my salvation. I lived a roller-coaster of doubt and uncertainty. I now reject that belief. I am secure in my salvation as long as I trust that Jesus is my savior. I think it is possible for people to once be saved and later reject Jesus, but our salvation does not hang by a thread by our behavior.

The problem with imagining a translator knows secrets of the language is that if one imagines the author understood the same secrets, for that to be meaningful one must also imagine the original intended audience knew the secrets, otherwise the secrets are immaterial.
And if they could be expected to know said secrets, how secret could they have been and why have they have been lost to all linguists everywhere?

@@echeneis2256 Jesus did say that, though in private he explained everything to his disciples, so it was abundantly clear to them. So the gospels and the epistles are NOT written in a secretive manner. Likewise with Paul. Paul never says that he speaks hidden things in parables.

@@jwhippet8313 well there is Gematria and there was a time when there was One Language (At the Tower of Babel), there is also the "tongue of angels" etc...
      Speaking in Tongues of Angels
What point was Paul trying to get across when he talked about speaking in tongues of Angels? Let's take a look at the Bible verse in question:
1 Corinthians 13:1 .....'Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.'
Now the key to understanding this Bible verse about speaking in tongues of angels, is in the VERY NEXT verse! What does Paul say in the next verse? ..... 1 Corinthians 13:2 .....'And though I have the gift of prophecy, and UNDERSTAND ALL MYSTERIES, and ALL KNOWLEDGE, and though I have ALL FAITH, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.' .....
The tongue of angels was connected to prophecy and the understanding of deep mysteries. So apparently this has something to do with angelic language. NOTE: There is also angel food!
from Wikipedia about Enochian Angelic Language of John Dee
      Dee's Angelic language
According to Tobias Churton in his text The Golden Builders,[5] the concept of an Angelic or antediluvian language was common during Dee's time. If one could speak the language of Angels, it was believed one could directly interact with them.
In 1581, Dee mentioned in his personal journals that God had sent "good angels" to communicate directly with prophets. (As angels frequently do in the Old and New Testament.
It's connected to the Tower of Babel. Also, note that Acts 2, Pentecost, when the 120 were gathered and all spoke in tongues, it was a REVERSAL of the Babel story where God divided the tongues of the people and scattered them. At Pentecost, God had brought the people of different languages and they spoke in "tongues" so that they all could hear each other speak. It was a REVERSAL, and a type of "in-gathering".

The one idea that I’ve noticed that each scholar has said is that it would be okay if they read it along side a good translation (ESV, NIV, etc...). The problem is that most people would then use the Passion like a commentary-it would inform them how to understand what they are reading in the translation, rather than showing them where the miss steps are in the TPT.

Mike, thank you for your incredibly helpful work- I can assure you- what you do is extremely valuable in people’s lives.
I’ve enjoyed all these TPT series. May I make a suggestion however, for future TPT - translator interviews?
You, Mike, clearly understand that the mistranslations are a big deal. That’s why you’ve put in the effort to expose it.
But the translator interviews seem to spend most time playing the man rather than playing the ball. It’s all about why Simmons grandiose and seemingly fraudulent claims. Then the translator says something to the effect that ‘most of it is ok if seen as a paraphrase, but this one verse is a bit man-centred.’
Most readers would wonder ‘why make a fuss about that? No big deal if we see it as a paraphrase.’
I think it would be good if you could join the dots to show WHY these emphases actually alter doctrine and how preachers are using this. What happens to a church where most people are using this translation, what happens to a spiritual life? A LOT happens! But many are so blinded they can’t grasp what happens as they are entrenched in the gnostic ideas.
Can you see a way to connect those dots? I’m sure plenty of your viewers have practical examples of what happened in their churches!
