I feel I should mention that I am not in agreement with Dr. Blomberg on the implications of identifying Jesus as Yahweh, but these interviews are not about only showing scholars saying stuff I agree with. They are about allowing various scholars to share THEIR opinions after reviewing TPT. I do think the point about Yahweh is still relevant because it was an important point in Dr. Blomberg’s review and it has to do with Simmons’ unjustified selection of variant readings when it suits him.
In all these interviews there are points where I would like to push back on something a scholar said but I didn’t for a couple reasons.
    1. I am in substantial agreement with them and those points of pushback would be secondary to the overall evaluation of TPT. The elongated discussion of the implications of calling Jesus “Yahweh” would take us away from the focus on the translation.
    2. These interviews serve as a check against not only the work of Brian Simmons but also against my own reviews of TPT. When the scholars say things differently than I would I think it’s a good thing overall because it allows for you to hear multiple opinions while you form your own opinion. If I were to edit out things I think differently on then it would decrease the overall value of the project.
With all that in mind I decided to just let Dr. Blomberg share his view on this and to stow my own further questioning of it for the time being. If you, like me, don’t see the problem with calling Jesus “Yahweh” then you can, like me, still see the problem of randomly using unlikely variant readings while appealing to fictitious “Aramaic originals.”
What I’m referring to is a point at 1:01:11. I absolutely agree that Jesus is not the Father but am not convinced that calling Jesus “Yahweh” is the same as calling Him “the Father” and thereby blurring the distinction between God the Father and God the Son.
Further, I do think that in other places the Bible does say that Jesus is Yahweh. At least that’s my understanding of it.

Excellent video pastor Mike. No need to apologize about the extensive nature and in-depth study that you were taking. We need more thoughtfulness, more doctrine more seriousness about doctrine not less. May I recommend Peter Gentry? He is a world-class Hebrew and Greek scholar and would be a wonderful interview as well

At first it seems like a no-no to call Jesus Yahweh but as I think about the places where the term Yahweh is used.... doesn’t it more accurately describe the Godhead? Maybe? That’s what I’m getting from it. I may be missing something, but whenever I think of the Israelites and Yahweh, I understand that GOD was there with them (you know, not just the Father or not just the Spirit, and not even just Jesus), every person of the Godhead.

I’m really glad you mentioned this, as a student in Bible college I keep running into the issue of just believing everything I hear from scholars, which I know is not always the wisest. It’s good to remember that biblical scholars may be intelligent and dedicated but they are not infallible, your comment reminded me of that.

Thanks for mentioning this. While I greatly respect Dr. Blomberg-and appreciate much of his excellent work-I think he misspoke or was confused about traditional language about the Trinity and Jesus being spoken of as kurios in the NT (cf. Romans 10:9-10, 13 among other passages and several significant studies on NT Christology in the last 10-20 years). Hopefully, he realizes this or a friend kindly brings it up to him! Also, I believe he is mistaken about 1 Corinthians 7:36-38. These are, in fact, some of the more difficult verses to translate in the New Testament due to a few ambiguities in the text that can lead to two quite different meanings. (Compare 4-5 translations from different eras and traditions and/or the NET Bible note at the end of 1 Cor 7:38.) This doesn't help the TPT's case here, though, since it doesn't really go with either legitimate option.

i wouldn't say God hides nothing. we know of several mysteries as told by the new testament authors. there's also the day and hour of Jesus's return which only the Father knows. however, i think we can be confident that God fully reveals who He is to believers through Scripture and the Holy Spirit. as for Biblical mysteries and difficult-to-understand passages, those certainly exist.
i also don't agree to the notion of Biblical "secrets". a secret is something that is there but is intentionally hidden. i don't believe God has intentionally hidden any Biblical knowledge within Scripture from His church. rather, i think that it's our lack of ability to understand certain Biblical knowledge that cause them to be mysteries, not secrets.

This man had his visions and messages written down in a new book because he said the Bible was not an accurate and complete message any longer. He said God was doing a new thing in his day, and only he had this secret revelation from God. The movement started small but grew and now is a major religion. The man's name was Mohammed. In order to win over acceptance from Christians, he had to acknowledge Jesus was a prophet, and Jews so Moses was a prophet, and the original Bible was accurate but through the years became corrupted and untrustworthy. Saying that "Jesus isn't Yahweh" is heresy. The singular NAME that the Father, Son, and Spirit share (Matthew 28:19) is Yahweh. If Christ isn't Yahweh then you just screwed a huge part of the New Testament quoting OT passages about Yahweh and applying it to Christ. Smh

I used to think that The Message was the worst Bible version. I still regard it as terribly corrupted, for many of the same kinds of reasons that TPT is wrong. Then came other ‘Bibles’ that are even worse than Peterson’s paraphrase. Now we have The Passion Translation, which is on a par with the ‘Bible’ of the Jehovah’s Witnesses founder; Charles Taze Russell, or the ‘Bible’ of Joseph Smith, that he produced to go with his Book of Mormon. Simmons’ claim that he was personally commissioned by God to produce TPT, in an encounter where he talks about being tempted to steal something from this so-called Library of Heaven. The number of terribly unscriptural things in Simmons’ accounts of these trips tp Heaven become insurmountable to anyone with a reasonable knowledge of the scriptures. The idea that sin in any form can exist in Heaven is borderline blasphemy and impossible.
The idea that God has allowed His word to be hidden away for the last two millennia and is only now bringing forth the REAL truth of His word, through some guy who talks about visits to Heaven, where he contemplated STEALING a book from this imaginary place in Heaven, is so preposterous that my vocabulary struggles to find the words to describe how appallingly bad it is.

A good interview. However, one of the things I wish you had discussed is pertaining to the nature of the Greek itself. To be certain, the textual issues against an original Aramaic are quite compelling. However, more than this is the fact that the Greek of the New Testament does not read like a translation of something into Greek. We have the LXX, we know what it looks like when Hebrew and Aramaic are translated into Greek. The philosophy tends to be fairly literalistic, and the result is that the Greek is often fairly clumsy and wooden, and sometimes downright atrocious. The Greek of the New Testament varies widely in style and substance, and in some cases it is not at a literary quality, like what we find in Mark's Gospel, or John's Gospel or the Revelation. But you'd have to be on some pretty hardcore drugs to tell me that Hebrews, 1 Peter or the second half of Acts are translations, just to name the most obvious examples. Although it was admitted in the interview that it would be very strange if letters written to the diaspora were written in Aramaic. Just another angle that you guys could have criticized TPT, although let's face it, there as a wealth of materials available as far as that is concerned.

~46:45 min Simmons says something like 'I know languages, I'm a linguist', but an actual linguist/language scientist would never say that. We talk about 'Language' as a phenomena, not 'languages' (although Linguists, especially field linguists, might learn a language in their work) This suggests to me a lack of actual Linguistics training, which doesn't bode well for any defense of his manuscript. And I'll also point out that being a Linguist and being a Translator are two different jobs though they are related. I'm a Linguist, I don't pretend to be a Translator.

If he didn't do anything, his "translation" is no better than the New Testament translation done by Johannes Greber, who said that he was "helped" by a "good spirit" to help him with difficult passages too. That the reason Jesus didn't use this name for himself when being questioned is that the understanding of the Jewish leadership at the time was that יהוה referred only to the Father and thus to get the point across that he was God but distinct from the Father He refrained from using this name. Am I mistaken? If so can someone please detail why this is not the case.

In the Old Testament, there is more than one person who is called Jahve. The angel of the Lord is also the Lord Himself.
In the New Testament we have the text about being saved by confessing Jesus as Lord in Romans 10, where Paul proves his point by quoting Joel 2:32. If we look up Joel 2:32, we find that the Hebrew word that is translated by Lord (Greek "kyrios"), it is Jahve.

1st thing you need to know is he created his own Bible version. Revelation 22:18-19
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
The same thing that’s wrong with this guys bible is the same with the Book of Mormon. The JV bible. The Koran. The NIV, ESV, NLT, CEV etc. read them all and compare them to the King James. If the Bibles have contradictions one of them must be wrong. Here’s a hint. They all (except the KJV) make it about works. If you love God but are working your way to heaven then what did Jesus die for?

Homonyms can be broken down into two groups: homophones which are each of two or more words having the SAME PRONUNCIATION but different meanings, origins, or spellings; and homographs which are each of two or more words SPELLED THE SAME but not necessarily pronounced the same and having different meanings and origins.
