    The illustration at the 8 minute mark shows spectral luminosity; but that is not the concept that you were discussing. The video is good, and I appreciate the work and explanations.
    Chromatic aberration and the illustrations that show that concept fit the concept that you are attempting to describe. The OBAFGKM is a soectral classification scheme.
    This is also a check to see how functional the YT comments can be. Will helpful advice presented in a respectful and constructive manner get people dog piled on?
    The video and explanations on the technical aspects of reflex sights is productive and strongly needed. The opposite is derp. Videos like this that help explain reflex sights are what is needed. I respect that. Thank you.

      I appreciated it. As someone who's lived with bad eyesight and corrective lenses my whole life it's hard to explain to people what happens when light passes through lenses.
      The weird one to tell people is when I look at a far off gas station price sign, which is usually green for diesel and red for gas and sometimes amber for something else. Looking straight in through the center of my glasses, everything lines up correctly. If I turn my head to the left, the green light shifts off the sign to the left and the red light shifts off the sign to the right, almost a 1 to 2 ratio respectively. At stop lights, I can turn my head and make the light appear as if it's floating in space, not connected to the light assembly at all. I don't think people really grasp that.

      @@zendell37oh man you just described my exact experience (with my relatively thick eyeglasses), looking at a PetSmart sign in the parking lot after a range day. Tilted my head one way and the red word and blue word would shift together. Tilted my head the other way and the two words shifted away from each other. Dang I hate glasses.

      @@zendell37 I believe that's parallax actually because the light is shifting in a different "plane", I too have this with my glasses.
      If you're talking about the chromatic aberration, that's usually also called "fringing" and is visible in the color distortion between high contrast objects - you can usually see this when you look through a scope that is dialed up in power and observe something black on white or white on black, usually there's a strange hue around the object.

    • @zendell37
      @zendell37 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Either way, it's become more of a problem since LEDs took over. The fact that they emit their specific frequency of light makes shifting more apparent versus older gelled or filtered lights from yesteryear(thinking of painted Christmas lights).
      I've always laughed to myself watching people talk about parallax on dot sights trying to explain that it doesn't seem bad on this or that when they don't have corrective lenses or bad eyesight.

      Different colors (wavelengths) of light have different focal points when converging on a receptor. Lens manufacturers usually combat that issue with apochromatic lens elements that have varying cross sections that correct for this tendency. I'd imagine that lenses correcting for astigmatism do something similar.
      I'm grateful for the information on spectral luminosity because that definitely answers some questions I've had for a long time. I hate the daylight balanced bulbs for nighttime use, except for specific tasks at really high intensity, as they seem unpleasantly harsh to me.

    As an astigmatic shooter this is the most comprehensive and informative review of astigmatism and red dots that I've been able to find. Your astigmatic experience and the scope of the review was incredibly helpful. It's difficult to be able to try before you buy, so I'd taken a chance on the green reticle version of the Holosun SCS . It's a great product and I liked the custom design for the MOS mount, but didn't care for the multi-reticle design and inability to manually adjust the brightness. It was just too bright which caused flaring on the image. After watching this video at least 3 times, I took a chance on the Holosun EPS Carry, and couldn't be happier. Based upon your experience with red versus green, I went with the red reticle. I received the EPS yesterday and mounted it on my G19 Gen 5. Using daylight setting 6, I finally have an actual round red dot and couldn't be happier. Thanks for your good work, and I'm off to the range today. My trusty Burris Fastfire 3, which is good, but not great, will now be saved as a backup, and I'm selling my SCS to a friend with better eyesight than me.

      I have heard other good things about the cyclee, but I’m assuming it’s a Chinese brand.
      5 months later, are you still liking the EPS? The footprint is perfect for a edc ccw, and as you said the dot appears much better than the competition.

      As my eye pick up green super easy. I dont need to keep the brightness as high as a red dot to find it. So the 2moa green dot is clear compare to a 2moa red. At the brightness setting that i need to locate the red dot. It starburst. The level to find the green is at least 2 click lower. So it does not starburst.

    What looks best is determined by the end user. Your lens distortion is unique to you. Go to a LGS and look at them in person.
    Larger, less intense (i.e. bright) dots look better when you have astigmatism. Generally. Small, intense dots will starburst more than larger, less intense ones. The 2moa EPS models' dots looked just as big to me considering the flaring, as the 6moa EPS.

      Did you prefer green or red for your astigmatism?

    • @calangel
      @calangel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thengine7 my EYES much prefer red. Due to green being easier to sense, it generally appears brighter to me and I don't like bright lights. The astigmatism is aggravated by bright lights, too.
      The best way for you to determine what looks good to you if you don't have a LGS with both in stock is this: while you're driving, look at the traffic lights in the distance. Which color, red or green, flares more to you? Which is easier to see against the urban background in the distance? Which color look like a sharper circle? Pay attention to which "pop" to you as they change (you'll have to ignore the splendor of the yellow/gold light...we don't have a yellow EPS, sadly).

    @jedironin380 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yep, same results I've found for red dot sights, turn them down as much as needed to reduce the "starry" effect, but still give you a good sight picture.
    Some of the newer "solar" sights adjust the dot brightness automagically to the ambient light level, sometimes more than I would want them to. Manual controls are usually available on those.

    The thing about astigmatism, what looks bad to one might not look bad to another, astigmatism just isn’t the same from person to person. There are a few largely universal things though, larger dots typically appear more as intended and heavy notch filters (looking at you RMR) will largely cause a lot of distortion. I can tell you that I see less distortion using green than I do red with my astigmatism

    Great video. Explanations were clear. My vision not so much. I struggle with an astigmatism with my rifles and have rectified that with some fantastic prism scopes from Primary Arms. I wonder if anyone makes something similar for a pistol?
    I agree with your comments about learning to shoot with the astigmatism visual defect that you have, I learned to do that prior to discovering the prism scopes for my AR’s. Most people will always have the same shaped defect that they visualize, for example, mine is a reverse “C” canted with the opening towards about 10 or 11 o’clock and anchored by a ball on each end. I learned by shooting what the actual center was for me, it was the top ball of the C. Most people can adapt to what ever they are dealing with as you practice more although initially it was very frustrating.
    Thanks again.

    This is a job well done in showing that some dots can be better for people with astigmatism . You pretty much nail it at the end by encouraging people to look through friends optics or at the lgs before buying to see if one works better for them . Ranking them though might be misinterpreted by some . Everybody’s eyes are different and it is not likely people with different astigmatisms will conclude the same as you . Nonetheless, the video is s great demonstration to show that there is a difference . I hope your experience applies to a vast majority of people with astigmatism. From an optics perspective, these are simple aspheric lenses that are very cheaply made and hastily aligned. Manufacturers COULD make a much better dot, but they would start at $5,000. Prescription glasses don't work as well for me because of the distance from your glasses to your eye. Also if your not looking through the correct spot on the glasses you get a horrible parallax. All that is solved with Toric contacts. Of course you can get some blurring eye goop from sunscreen/sweat running in your eyes just use some rewetting drops.

    I have a fair bit of astigmatism and find the Holosun red dots I have used (509T, 407, 509 ACSS) all have crisper reticles than my SRO and RMR.
    That said, the Dual Illuminated RMR’s have NO blooming at all. These use daylight to light the reticle and not an LED. The only thing is that the green reticles have really dark filter coatings on the lens and are essentially dark at dusk and dawn and the Amber reticles have fairly large dots. The one to buy is the Amber Triangle. You get the precision of a large dot but the accuracy of the point, and if you are skilled and know your bullet drop over distance of your gun and ammo, you get some basic BDC capability as a bonus.

    Thank you, first and foremost. The blue block lenses are probably a great route for me to go. I need new glasses anyway. I’ve definitely shy’d away from red dots, because of my astigmatism. I’ve been leaning more toward prism sights, for my rifles. I’ll have to try one of the ones that you’ve recommended.

    As someone with astigmatism, I have to try before I buy. The smaller dots always give me an issue while 6 MOA and up tend work best. It’s interesting to see how much the hunters HD make the dot pop. I’ve found the same applies to rifle dots. Eotech has been the best for me.

    My RMR is definitely the worst starbursting dot I own. My SRO only gets fuzzy on high brightness, and both of the Romeo1pros that I have are solid clear dots. I’ve also had good luck on that front with holosuns, my 507c is a touch blurrier than the Romeos but is still pretty close to a clear dot. It’s not exactly a fair comparison, but the chevron on the ACSS 507c is very crisp and clear as well.

    Great video. My astigmatism is corrected as well as it can be and I still turn a 2 moa into a six moa burst and every 6 I've messed with is completely unusable. Then again I have an exemption for safety glasses because they only cetify polycarbonate not ultralight lenses and in plain poly they can't make my prescription.

    I have holosuns, Leupold, even a VCSS Vulcan in green. But I recently bought a cheap cyelee wolf 2 for astigmatism for $120. And it’s the only one that works for me, it’s crystal clear. The downside is it has a large 64 moa circle, most people don’t like them. Also it’s same price for red or green.

    Good video! I have a bad astigmatism as well and I also have found the MPS to be the best dot for my eye. I was surprised though that the delta the delta or SRO would be my next choice. In a video before you had mentioned the larger dots being better so I tried it and WOW you weren’t lying it was like an ah ha moment for me! So I agree if you have an astigmatism a larger moa is key! For me and my eye the rmr is the worst! The blue filter and distortion are hell on my bad eyesight so I have to turn up the brightness which on the rmr I’ve found typically gives me a double dot. Which is no bueno.
    So for me rmr is worst delta/SRO and MPS are my favorite. Larger dot if possible 👍🏻

    I concur- the Delta Point Pro is terrible in terms of 'starburst'. Wish I'd seen this video before buying it. Lately Ive been running circle-dots with the central dot turned off and the circle just bright enough to see. That way I can look through the circle and see in detail what's in the center of it. I can easily center the target within the circle, where running the circle dot tyically obscures whats within the circle. The circle by itself is easier to 'find' when presenting than a dot and appears as a big dot up close - about 4 inches in diameter at about 25 feet and becomes easier to see through at greater distances out to as far as I'm likely to shoot with a handgun. With the 12 & 6 and 9 & 3 marks on the cicle its easy to approximate where a dot would be within it. On my rifles I use micro prisms or an LPVO for longer distances. Great video! Thanks.

    I have an astigmatism in my dominant eye. The eye doctors always tell me it’s so slight they won’t yet give me a prescription for glasses yet. Anyway, I have the 507c acss in red. When dry fire practicing indoors I see two of the chevrons practically touching each other with a NNW attitude. When I go to the range (which is outdoors) I find my Oakley sunglasses with the “prism” polarization sharpens it up to where I no longer see the two chevrons. Sunglasses are fine for outdoors, but it’s not like I’m going to put them on at 2am if I hear someone in the house. Been waiting to pick up an EPS carry to check out, after this video I’ll make sure it’s the 6MOA model. Thank you for making this video.

    Great video, as a life long sufferer of "lights at night are obnoxiously bright disease". this was super helpful. Also, best optic I've used that still has a pretty crisp clean dot is a green dot ADE sight from amazon that cost 100 bucks, bought a Trijicon RMR and returned it because it was virtually unusable to me, giant red splatter to my eyes.

    This was a fantastic review. I wish more reviewers would have a small section when they review optics and talk about astigmatism and color blind. I've spent a good amount of money on prescription glasses for the range because my astigmatism flairs up when I'm using reddots. There countless times when I get the starburst the starburst covers the target or oh look my reddot turning into a grapes.

    • @stevem4783
      @stevem4783 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm the exact opposite. I've looked through the green Trijicon triangle and I see three of them overlapped on each other.
      Dots are annoying, but usually just a little starburst-y and not bad enough to negatively affect my accuracy (at handgun ranges.) The triangle was completely unusable.
      No two eyes are exactly the same, that's what makes this whole thing frustrating. One person's word may be gospel to them but meaningless to another.

    I shoot PCC in IDPA. The AR that I use is in .45ACP. It makes the 135 pf. The dot does not move. I use a C-More rail with a 12moa dot. I too have a slight astigmatism. I found some wrap around glass safety glasses that removes my astigmatism. Dot is perfectly round. They are non prescription glasses. My eye doctor cannot explain why.

    Red, green, chevrons and eotech all have a star burst for me. What works is sunlight. The more out side light, the better. The dimmer the dot, the better.
    I actually contacted swamp fox about my new in box "broken" green dot. Turns out I developed an astigmatism within the last year that I've shot something with a dot. At least I was nice about it to them and they worked with me to figure out my eyes are the problem. I now wear glass which helps at work a good bit.
    It is great to this kind of content instead of the typical gun review when all the non disclosure agreements are done when a new product is sent out before hand. Thank you!

    I concur with the Romeo 1 Pro, I have good vision but I do have stigmatism. Throughout my 1 year carry of my P320 Scorpion, the 6 moa R 1 pro looked like a blob of starburst every time I shoot. I also agree that the Steiner MPS doesnt really give me the same effect even with a smaller dot size, it stays true to that size and no starburst effect to my eyes.

    I have the HE407c x2 Green 2moa & it looks perfect if I'm looking at it from a close distance but stretched out in a shooting stance it kinda looks like "2 little dots on top each other."
    No different than my cheap 4moa Red dot.
    It still looks like 2 little dots, 1 on top of the other.
