But do you need that many reticles? Holosun 507 COMP

  • The Holosun 507 COMP is one of the first multi reticle optics, taking cues from the Fast Fire IV. Since the Holosun 507 COMP has 4 reticles which can be combined for even more combinations. But is that many reticles a good idea? Thank you to Optics Planet for providing the optic for video.

    After 2 matches, 20 circle (no dot) feels the best to me, just seems easier to keep track of when shooting fast. I'm newish, it could be that bigger is better when your fundamentals aren't that great.

    As you mentioned early in the video, the big circles are helpful for people adjusting to dots from irons. the 507K was my first dot experience. Ran the big circle and the dot for 3-4 range sessions and that helped me get acclimated to finding the dot. Haven't used the larger circles since, but there may be other advantages. I picked up my first 507Comp on a package like you were holding, and was able to swing it for $300. About 2 weeks later the 507Comp got its current ride, the DS9. It seems the dot never leaves the large window on that pistol, and even if I need a small tool, I can swap batteries without removing the optic. Thanks on the advice on running the 8 with the 2. I'll give that a try.

    I remember a review you made about the Vortex Venom optic 6 MOA with you highly recommend it. I got me one, and thereafter, I've been getting a minimum of 3 MOA or higher on all my optics. A larger MOA works better for quick target acquisition. Thanks, David!

    Those big circles are great for steel challenge. Picking them up from the draw is great and you basically put the circle around the plate and youre good. For more dynamic competitions with smaller A zones the smaller circle is, as you said, preferable.

    • @the1911dude
      @the1911dude ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I thought that at one time and heard others say that. From my experience I had slower times because I was focused on centering the plate in the circle. I found the fastest way is to see the plate and pull the bang switch when the dot hits the plate.

    • @CompShooter54
      @CompShooter54 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sounds like you are new to steel challenge. As a GM shooter in SC if you want to get faster you need to stop looking at the dot. Centering the plate in the circle takes time, way too much time. When you are trying to shoot Roundabout or Smoke in under 1.6 seconds there is no time to shoot the way you envision. I have been trying an experiment of not using the dot at all on these 2 stages, I just shut it off. On S & H I have shot my fastest times ever with no dot, it eliminates the distraction of the dot. As soon as the plate is in the center of the window I pull the trigger. I actually never stop the gun from moving on the big plates, only the stop plate. You can say all you want about being target focused and not dot focused, but when the dot is there you will look at it. I forgot to mention that a shoot Rim Fire Rifle Open and I have a rock solid cheek weld. I don't think you could do this with a pistol as even a small variation in your grip will cause you to miss without a dot. Anyway, SC is a great game, just don't lock yourself into one way of shooting it, you need to be constantly experimenting to improve.

      @@CompShooter54could you offer useful information for pistol users? A class carry optics and m class rfpo and rfpi here. No one is using this on rfpo. There are much bigger and better options for those style applications.

    • @CompShooter54
      @CompShooter54 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Freakingstang I do shoot pistol in USPSA, either CO or Open, and use a Vortex Venom or Viper 6 MOA. I am listed as a B shooter, but I am really only a C shooter. I am listed as B because I am A in PCC, and because of the stupid classification system they automatically bump you up to one class below your highest class. STUPID. Especially since you are comparing rifles to pistols. Maybe if it was pistols to pistols it MIGHT make sense, but not rifles to pistols. That would be like saying I was good at racing motorcycles so I must be good at racing cars!
      Anyway, if you are shooting M starting at low ready, and A drawing from the holster, I think you are doing fine with the equipment you are using. You should probably talk with the GM shooters at the matches you attend. They will give you much better info that I ever could.
      But if you ever decide to try rifles, let me know, that I can help with.

      507C ACSS is the only micro dot on the market worth owning IMO. That 250 MOA ring for getting you on sight is clutch. Even if you're very very well red dot trained it still helps you in odd positions and in hard stress. Absolutely cannot believe nobody else is copying that concept. I will never own another micro red dot that doesn't have that type of reticle. Once you use it you cannot go back to traditional reticles.

    Great review as always, For Steel Challenge I think the 2/20 circle dot works great. Targets are 10” round, 12” round and 18”x24” rectangle. The 2/20 makes fast work on the steel. However, I as you do keep going back to the 2/8 circle dot as my Happy place with this optic!

    I've run the circle/dot for years. I basically ignore the dot and just put the circle over the A zone and pull the trigger. Very quick to pick up and for competition it gets you in the down zero zone nearly every shot.

    Love this breakdown. Im new to dot shooting in the last ~6 months. The 2moa dot was definitely fine to get me started on how to acquire a dot vs irons (and training during darker months of the year). As I get more into faster drills, preparing for USPSA competition, and shooting in brighter conditions - it has very quickly become less helpful. I have a 507comp arriving this week for my Prodigy that I think is going to be a big help!

    I've been using a 508T since they came out and I initially used the 32MOA ring + 2MOA dot combo as basically training wheels for acquiring the dot and building muscle memory, since then I've never used it apart from weak hand stages for much the same reason, helping to find and track the dot cause I'm lazy with weak hand practice.
    Having the full set of 2, 8, 20 and 32 is kind of like having training wheels, a BMX bike, a mountain bike and then a downhill bike/road bike in terms of progression and learning capabilities, as you grow with the optic and in the sport it lets you refine and progress your skills without being stuck with a handicap or having to buy multiple optics.

    I think what you missed, and is in the other comments, is you are a great shooter so you have a blind spot to newer shooters to whom the 32 MOA outer circle is very helpful. You might say it’s a crutch and they should practice more and you are right. But in the mean time, the 32 moa does speed them up. The great part of this reticle is multiple skill levels can use it effectively to their skill…. Just say’n.

    I was lucky enough to get two from the first shipment about a month ago. I agree the 2/8 is the most useful for speed with my (corrected) astigmatism. I like the availability to just choose a 2 to zero but then switch to a circle & dot depending on the task. 32 is useless but 20 can be used to frame the target up close. I was shooting Bill drills today on a M9A4 doing very well. The big window is a plus coming from a 507/508.

    I love my 507c ACSS. The ~10MOA chevron works like a big dot on most targets, but the 250MOA outer circle is fantastic for new shooters or those strong hand/weak hand stages where you may not index the dot perfectly. Would love to see the ACSS reticle on a bigger window like this 507 comp.

      @@luckymanham302 It doesn't, and that's exactly what makes it awesome. If your presentation is a bit off, you'll see the circle to help index the dot/chevron. If you see the dot/chevron, you don't see the giant circle cluttering the window.

    The 2,8,20 combo I use for matches especially steel and shooting plate racks. Put the plate in the circle and down it goes. I also use this optic as my primary duty carry, out Dept. issues the SRO and have seen 4 break as well as mine with minor drops and bumps.

    I started using the 2/32 MOA sights when I first transitioned to a red dot so I could pick up the red dot faster. Now I use the 2 MOA (507c). I put tape on my sight to reduce focusing on the dot and it makes the 2 MOA dot a little easier to see. If it breaks, I'll probably switch to this sight.

    About the 32 MOA circle: the description on the Holosun EU site says the 32 MOA is perfect for 15 meters shotgun steel plate. I'm not a good enough shotgun shooter to say if this is realistic, but it could be.
    Just ordered the 507comp for my pistol. I'm one of those guys who bought a 3 MOA dot for IPSC and then realized it is a little small. Especially if you're new to IPSC *and* red dots like I am, I think a large window and a large dot will be a much better choice. Can't wait to try it out!

    Thanks for the comparison to the DPP. Just FYI, those are regularly $350 online, you just have to watch for them. At that point, it's just a decision between which footprint your gun supports - DPP or RMR. Glad to see you still running the Prodigy, too!

    • @VincitOmniaVeritas7
      @VincitOmniaVeritas7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought that the DPP footprint was dead on the water and the RMR would become the de facto industry standard. HOWEVER… the introduction of Holosun’s truly micro enclosed reflex sights like the EPS gave new life for the DDP footprint (not to mention it also accepts the smaller RMSc). The RMR footprint is a nightmare to design an enclosed sight (the screw placement makes it almost impossible). Since Trijicon couldn’t even make the RMRcc compatible (with gaps) with its traditional RMR footprint, I think it won’t be the standard for long.

    Always something to consider: people that swap optics from gun to gun if they want want a backup red dot on their rifle, the settings may be different at different distances from eyes. You can swap it from your pistol to your rifle to shotty. Shooting bird shot you may want to use the MRS to get just the circle to mimic the spread at the distance you think you'll be using it at, dot for slug, and smaller circle for buck shot. Overall it does seem like they made an "all-in-one" dot. which isn't bad. not going to put it on my CC for sure though. it's a monster!

    I like the circle reticles from holosun for scatter gats. Work up a good load that has about a 32 moa pattern, zero the optic, and you're golden. Great for hunting and HD. Some shooters just do better with putting a circle on the target. I used to shoot archery competitions and my front sight was a circle. Center the circle in the rear peep, and center the X in the circle. The human eye is shockingly good at naturally putting things in the dead center of circles. This is part of the reason why aperture(peep) sights work so well compared to open iron sights(V notch/ U notch, ect). Some people that shoot precision rifle matches with iron sights opt for a circle front sight too, nearly identical to my archery setup. Is it for everyone in every application? Nope. Whether or not it fits you and your application is 100% subjective and up to you.

    Don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, Since PCCs have such a holdover when shooting close at like 3 or 5 yards, some of them will use the 32MOA ring with the 2 moa dot and they'll put the bottom of the big ring on those really close targets. Because that's where the bullet will hit, due to holdover. And they'll use the 2moa dot when they're shooting fifteen and twenty five Yards.

    I think the circle+dot combo is better for high stress situations like if you ever have to use your personal defense/home defense weapon. I don’t think it’s good for competition. If I used this for comp I’d definitely use the 8+2.
    I may buy this and put it on my home defense pistol, tbh. The large window would be nice.

  • @joquin4618

    Nice 👍! On rifles, I prefer a 2 moa dot with the circle ⭕️ ring cuz it give me fast target acquisition with accuracy and allows for my holdovers. On my Benelli m4, I have the 507 with just the circle ⭕️ cuz it gives me a decent buckshot pattern out to 25 yards. On my Glock 19 gen4, I have the 507k with circle dot works good, but I also have the ACSS 507 RDS on the g19x and it’s perfect ! Now I’m gonna buy a PSA dagger slide and put this Holosun competition optic on it. Tricked out gen3 Glock clone on a budget. Moral of the story: get the optic that best suits your needs, and these may change with any given application.

    My go to optics for competition are the 6 MOA R3Max, SRO and Cmore RTS . I’ve run the 507X2 and 407CO successfully but the smaller window size is not optimal comparatively. I just recently tested my Shadows 2’s at full speed, , one with the 6MOA SRO and one with the 8MOA 407CO and the results were virtually the same . However , at 25 yards - the big window with the 6MOA dot obviously feels more comfortable visually.
    But, I am going to pick up a couple 507 Comp ‘s for my RMR cut back up pistols ( S2’s and P10F’s) as my guess is that they win over the other options for performance vs price . I agree that I most likely will never use any other reticle than the 8MOA circle - but it’ll be fun to play around with all the options. Also, I just shot a brutal stage that required shooting 6in plates at over 40 yards - that’s def an instance where I would’ve cycled down to a 2 MOA dot if I had the option .
    Note on my optic experience :
    SRO - no problems - but those sticky buttons are a bit annoying
    R3 Max - had to get one warranty replaced due to button failure
    R1Pro - got one warranty replaced due to cracked lens
    Cmore RTS - low round count comparatively so no issues but I dislike the Allen key height/windage adjust
    HS 507X2 / 407CO - 100% bombproof so far and I like all the controls - but 2 MOA dot quality is not very clean - but I really like the 8 MOA circle - very crisp lines for my eyes.

    • @stovepipe8966
      @stovepipe8966 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oops - note on R3Max button issue - I believe the latest versions have new flat buttons that replace the problematic “bubble” buttons - which may fix the only issue on an otherwise great optic

    I run a EPS with the 2 moa dot 32 MOA circle. I like having that big easy to track beach ball bouncing around in the window for CQB and if i wanna get crazy and push it out to 50 or 100 yds I can shift my eyes focus to the 2 moa dot for precision and use the circle to bracket the target.Also i noticed the 32moa on the eps is more like 26 MOA because the 32 moa on the 508T is noticably larger. Not a pro competitive shooter btw just a guy who trains alot and does bill drills and timed dynamic shooting against friends

    Being able to change MOA sounds pretty awesome, you can zero it and run long distances with the small dots, and turn it up for competition and defense. The other reticles seem unnecessary. Is there some downside to having adjustable reticles? Less reliability in the emitter or something? Agree that solar failsafe is a gimmick, unless you're training outside all the time, at competition you might get 3-5 minutes of use in the sun out of the holster. Shake awake would be nice though, but with an external door you could just take the battery out.
