Absolutely correct: back in the day, we were 'gamers'...which meant video games, board games, RPG games, TT wargames, etc., etc. All types were loved and appreciated for what they brought to the table. Some we liked more than others, but we appreciated (and played) them all.
Yep! I guess fracturing was inevitable along with growth, seems a natural human instinct to self-group as numbers get bigger. Take the bitter with the better, or something like that right? 🍻
I'm am and old 80's gamer, and I played EVERYTHING I could get my grubby paws on. Games were not just the mathematics, they were worlds of imagination (understanding the math did help however 😁) A list of what I have played, just in RPG's would be....... extensive, let alone what I have run, played one off's in conventions etc as the early 90's got a lot of "system less" games run at conventions, at least out here, I cannot speak to the US scene in that regard. Add in TTWG's, Board games, computer games........... Holy hell, that is a LONG list. You are absolutely right however, we were, and remain, GAMERS. (even without the time to do it as much as we used to) You're my geek right? Bought this new box of fun, wanna give it a go?
Top notch vid Mr TA u have inspired.... me gonna pop to a craft store here in the UK this afternoon. Just bought Rangers Of Shadowdeep to play with my Daughter who wants to create and paint models and scenery with me.
Okay, making a movie about Frostgrave sounds like an awesome idea. While I haven't played the game I started reading about it and about the game's lore (which I gather is mostly created by the players), watching videos quite a bit, and I love the world it's set in and the stories that came out of it.
That was such an awesome interview! Really enjoyed the casual chat format, and you nailed it as far as an interviewer guiding the conversation goes. Good ole Joe McCullough seems like a great guy to talk about pretty much anything with too! Dude needs to stop taking my money, though 😂
OK, with a supplement for Silver Bayonet being written by Ash (GMG games) I suspect a definite narritive feel to it - guess SIlver Bayonet is moving into my 'purchase when the funds allow' list (i.e, when there is another Osprey sale).
The 5 Parsecs/5 Leagues campaign structure does have a narrative arc that drives the subsequent table rolls. In some ways it mirrors some of the campaign arc supplements Joe has written for Stargrave but with a bit more randomization. But I can totally see from a design perspective where one would not want to design random tables.
Yeah I want aware of the 5 parsec system so I found that very interesting and may have to pick it up to check it out but I also understood Joe’s point as well. Awesome thing about the hobby is there’s room for every type of player and creator!
Great video! Joe McCullough is a legend! If you need a leatherworker for the Frostgrave movie, give me a shout (like yourself, I actually work in film and TV too hahaha)
@@tabletopalchemy normally costume, lots of armour and belts and bracers. I'm UK based, and the strikes over there have stopped a lot of work over here too (good luck to them, mind!), so I'm currently doing leatherwork breakdown for a props dept on a medieval film. Nice for a change, and kinda fun beating up leatherwork rather than making it.
Ah very cool! When I did my little fantasy web series I tried to get ahold of some cool leather armor bits but man my $0 budget kinda choked on that 🤣 I ended up getting one very cool articulated pauldron - leather work is amazing! Good luck on the productions!
Would be really interesting to know what Joe thinks of: - 1) Infinity? 2) Brawlmachine? Infinity is so different to a lot of wargames, but has the d20 and the responiveness (and the lethality!) that Joe seems to like. And Brawlmachine seems to me the BEST incarnation of Warmachine - perhaps what the game could always have been as they severely cut the points but also banned some of the most powerful casters in the game to even out the power, and for all the issues with PP the fundamental game system is still good imo.
Stargrave is one of my favorite skirmish games. I've really noticed a push in both RPGs and skirmish games to not only simplify rules and distill them down to what is needed to facilitate fast and fun play, but to explore really different genres and worlds. Especially in indie style RPGs and miniature games.
3 hours of interviews in 72 hours............. I KILL YOU!!! (now I have got the Achmed off my chest) Actually, I'm not entirely sure what to say, both were good, but for different reasons. I think the interview you controlled here was better than the one you gave, but I would chalk that more up to being in the direct "public eye" rather than anything actually being wrong. I think there is a certain amount of control as an interviewer rather than an interviewee you find more comfortable, and that is much of a stylistic decision, or imperative, choose which one fits better. The Director Vs the Actor? I don't know, there is a fan around here covered in brown goo, we'll see what sticks😂😆 I do feel you interviewing and having creative control is a far better format........... at this stage simply because that seems to be what you are more familiar with. I have no doubt you are capable of getting to the other side of things. As for the content. Fantastic questions, fantastic answers, throw in some hot wings and you are on a roll (or perhaps some of your brothers tapped kegs.........) Fantashtiq (hic)
@@Ogre6972 Pointy helmets might work as well........... Have you seen my little tank? Or the fallen Madonna with the big boobies by Van Klump? Or the Cracked Vase with the big flowers?
🤣 Yes kegs and Kaiser’s either way we rollin’! Yeah I’m definitely not an “on-camera” type, but some of that inevitably has to do with practice lol. And editing! I feel a lot more comfortable when there’s an edit involved. I streamed Minecraft for two years and got fairly decent at “chilling” on the mic but I ran without a face cam lol. And I do dig asking questions. Maybe I just need to drink the beer *beforehand* … 🏴☠️🍻

Dude is a legend, great interview.
Love this interview, thanks for making the time for this!
Joe is amazing. I was thrilled by each discussion topic.
Awesome! I also checked out your content, great stuff, dude! I’ll hit you up on there 🍻🏴☠️
That was a really cool interview. I look forward to more expansions of Rangers of Shadow Deep and Stargrave
Yeah me too! 🍻

That is awesome to hear! My bet is you guys will have fun, it’s a fantastic game🤙🍻
Thank you for making this happen! Big McCullough fan!

Yeah it’s pretty perfect setting for storytelling! 🎬🍿
@@tabletopalchemy So If you ever do end up making a movie about it, count me in. I don;t have any special skills but I am willing to work for free :)
Lol that’s an enormous special skill all on its own!
Really dug your process questions. That was cool to hear
Nice! 🍻

Lol agreed, I just added two more books to my shopping cart that I’m sure I won’t get around to playing for a couple years 😂. Glad you enjoyed it!🍻
Great interview. thx! As a huge J McC fan I think an RPG set in the world of The Silver Bayonet would be amazing.
I agree! I’d kinda like to see any rpg rule set Joe would come up with. 🍻
Great interview
Very cool interview 🎉
Great interview 👍🏼

Well Dangit I didn’t know osprey had sales! Now I gotta set up some kinda alert or something …
Well how cool is that? Very awesome interview. 😁👍
Right on🍻

@@tabletopalchemy it's nice seeing someone on TH-cam in that crossover of gaming and film work. Odd how there's not more.

Good questions! I hadn’t heard of Brawlmachine, that sounds promising, I shall check it out. 🤙🍻
I’d love to have a bat phone to Joe. I’ve never written a story and I’m in deep building a fantasy based skirmish game.
Lol yes! I think just playing out a scenario will generate a story you can flesh out however you want! 🤙🍻

I’ve got all the Stargrave books but I haven’t played yet - definitely looking forward to it!
Silver Bayonet is sounding more interesting. So many rulesets, so little time and money.
Lol agreed!
Great interview until the last bit.
