One year later review X47 turbo upgrade for Fiesta ST

  • It's been 10,000 miles on the hybrid turbo swap and one year. Here are a few thoughts on this upgrade one year later.
    Note when I said that other higher HP turbo upgrade options for this car will run you $10,000+ I was talking about the turbo kit itself plus all the bolt-ons, tune, tires and associated stuff that must be added to a high horsepower setup to make it complete. Go check the prices, it's crazy how much it can add up to in order to do it right. That's the cost of high horsepower. As I mentioned in the vid my setup runs around $2-$3,000 depending on what you get, new/used, if you install it yourself.
    Thanks for watching, holler at me if you have questions.

    Thanks. Your videos are the best I've found re: the Fiesta ST. (I was going to say they were among the better ones, but now that I've watched several of yours, I think they're the best out there.)

    POUND-For-POUND, the FiST is as good as any other car on the road, or better in many cases.

    thanks for posting this. i just got a 17 FiST and am trying to take a realistic approach at modifying this car. i had a 400whp evo x and it was not always enjoyable to drive and constantly had little problems. this car is my favorite combination of fun, handling, practicality and being inexpensive to drive, buy and modify. i can see myself doing a setup like yours in the future maybe after the warranty is gone. i do need it to be reliable for awhile though as i still enjoy using it for Uber/Lyft

    Nice series I’ve found that we have just about the same idea about the car. As far as a daily driver with the most “fun factor” for the price you absolutely can’t beat it! 300/300 is where it’s at with 30+ mpg

      Hmmm I think I've covered it all in my 15 or 20 videos...really no maintenance, just change the oil/filter and empty the catch can at the same time, clean the air filter, keep the tires at the right pressure, that's about it, I've had zero problems. Check out my videos on traction control and race gas/93 tune for driving impressions. Id rather have a stock turbo FiST with a Wavetrac then a stock diff FiST with a bigger than stock turbo but to each their own I guess... Unless you like to spin your wheels all the time from a stop.
      I do want a 2014+ Golf R and APR or Cobb tune it (around the same numbers and I know cobb is cheaper stage 3 OTS)... but as you pointed out that car is more than double the cost of a new FiST. The FiST is far more 'raw' a hot hatch also by nearly everyones comparison if you are looking for the ultimate drivers car.

    I’ve enjoyed watching the evolution of your car for the last year. I just recently traded mine in for the rs about 2 weeks ago. Hopefully it will be as reliable as the fiesta has been. It was hard to chose between rs and golf r but I’ve owned a golf r before and the rs has more character driving around like the fiesta did.

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man. I wish I'd started the videos back 3 years ago when it was stock but I didn't really start posting much till I did the turbo upgrade.
      You are I are probably similar in our taste in cars, the Golf R was a close contender for me. I drove one before buying the Fiesta ST and it's such a nice car, power is nice and it's very luxurious, but it just didn't have the character of the ST. That being said, just a few thousand dollars of off the shelf APR mods and the R becomes a supercar.
      Hope you enjoy your RS, they are quite nice as well!!!! I agree on your assessment, the R is nice but the RS has the attitude.

    • @agentk4257
      @agentk4257 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gray25xt my golf r was modified with around and would take about anything. It’s was side by side with 2018 mustang til about 120. It handles great with coilovers but even then there was 0 feedback. The fiesta changed my definition of what every sports car should be able to feel like and be like regardless of price. Looking forward to the next few years to see who will do what next. I’m disappointed with fords decision to stop with most cars but I like almost all car brands. I think ford would have kept pushing the competition to make better and better cars. Hopefully they still will.

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, Ford, meh. It sucks and I agree, but you and I both got some of the last of the good stuff they're offering in the USA.
      Your assessment of the Golf R is exactly how I feel...my STi'd Forester XT a few years back was faster and AWD was great but it just wasn't as fun as my Fiesta ST. The Golf R had the same feeling....super fast and really nice but specifically in steering input and road feel it just didn't feel very fun or communicative. Your review there makes me glad I chose the ST because sometimes I wonder about life in a Golf R....I have a soft spot in my heart for them for some reason but obviously I chose the ST and I'm happy with it.

    • @agentk4257
      @agentk4257 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gray25xt yea it was hard not to go back to golf r...I almost did just for the speed but the rs was fun to drive around the block just like the st. I decided I go with rs and wait and see what the next golf r is like. I’m hoping with the rs gone vw will try to blow everyone’s mind with next golf r.

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I haven't driven an RS yet but from what everyone describes it's sort of a cross between the Golf R and Fiesta ST. Maybe get some of the benefits/characteristics of both.

    X47 is a good place to go defo interesting video. Worth mentioning pushing more whp with a bigger turbo is just worthless as you say not only does it spin way too often it gets very laggy aswell especially in the first couple gear changes

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well not totally worthless, the power is useable in all gears you just can't use all of it in 1st and 2nd, but you still get to use a lot of it in 1st and 2nd.

      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul. I got mine barely used from a guy I met on the feistastforum.com, you could look there for used stuff that pops up on occasion or pwnall performance sells them stateside, though all they sell now is the X47R.

    • @D3M0N.5K1LL5
      @D3M0N.5K1LL5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My personal opinion is that the X47 is a better turbo than the X47R. X47 is the best turbo at the torque/power game under 300whp goal. If there is any desire for about 50whp more VT330 is the best. If maximum reliability for the turbo or power is wanted out of the stock block then 2860R gen 2 or G25 for up to around 380whp on the stock block. 400whp is where there begins risk to the rods and the block has been proven to north of 450whp before the ring lands have issues. Incredible engine in these cars, really.

    i'll share my experience with my 2015 ST. i just passed 105k miles this morning. First trans made gear whine (since day one) noises that got worse, changed at 74k. next one lasted 20k (bought used). this third one has the seemingly known gear whine in 5th and 6th.DESPITE that one issue...er...and the blend door lol... i love this car. at 42k the x37 was put on (yeah its been on AWHILE) with a mountune catted downpipe, GFB DV+, 14psi WG and dyno tuned. I'll mention the CPE exhaust though it's been determined it didn't add any power, made 239/259 which didn't make sense. after switching tuners and ethanol blend the car felt stronger. at 90k i FINALLY put it on the rollers and it made 286/290. feel pretty quick to me BUT..im getting that itch for more power. im not sure whether to go 2860 or mountune MRX. i'm not one of the guys that will add aux fuel though soo im not sure which turbo to get next!

      @gray25xt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. With the right driver, traction control on, and a clutch dump I think it would do 5.0-5.5. I can slowly pull away from a 2018 STi if that helps for comparison.

  • @Jahmas001
    @Jahmas001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Again, thank you for your assessments and reports. You have an almost, empirical approach to your build that gives great credibility and rational results. At this point, I was wondering if you would ever consider a LSD and if you had ever tried one. It seems that the European 2018 has this. As far as traction goes, this would be shy of AWD but perhaps the optimum this car could be.

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure thing Jim. Yeah I'm not out to get subscribers or views just trying to help out folks if possible. I'm making the kind of videos that provide the sort of info that would have helped me when I was doing the research and installs.
      I considered LSD but I've ridden in a Fiesta ST with 300+hp with LSD and it doesn't help straight line traction much, it's more for holding power coming out of corners. Since I don't drive the car super aggressively it's just not something I can justify adding to the car since it's not cheap.

    • @D3M0N.5K1LL5
      @D3M0N.5K1LL5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respect that you have your own opinion and I wanted to provide some counter discussion on some of the things you have said based on actual experience. I do not have a place to work on the car to this level anymore at the moment but I did the parts install myself that I will be discussing.
      Too bad you didn't get a chance to sit in a car with a Wavetrac LSD and a Garrett turbo. This is closer to the style of LSD that rally cars use (clutch pack diff) but doesn't use the clutch packs, which eventually wear out.. it uses a 'wave gear' which is patented tech from Wavetrac. Huge difference in straight line traction. I spent months trying to decide if I wanted more power than stock tuned 27psi kp39 could deliver because of the issue of traction ruining the car, as for me, not being able to use full throttle on a car with under 300whp in 1 and 2 is unacceptable. After much research, and finding a article on a 400whp+ GTi that had no issues driving in SNOW with a Wavetrac differential installed, I finally decided on a differential. Let me preface what I am going to say next with following statement: Not all Limited Slip Differentials are created equal.
      Traction and Power:
      I can hook 260whp in 1st and 300whp+ in 2nd on 165 width WINTER tires with that diff (tested in summer obviously there would be some slip in winter). Turbo: GTX2860R Gen 2, 280wtq 325whp. I track this car and its been reviewed by a professional driver on track with me who said the power band was perfect and the LSD hold the power down. He dropped it into 2nd on our second pass at relatively low speed and went WOT nearly to redline where power is at its peak and I believe this was my 320whp kill tune, 100% traction no slipping. Its the same story on the street and even in rain and snow the car is better in every situation. Traction control actually helps the diff do its job also along with Cobb traction control.
      I still have stock turbo sitting at my folks house and thinking of converting it to a hybrid x47 internals but the extra torque does not seem to help the Fiesta ST driving dynamics in lower gears as higher horsepower does at the end of the RPM band. It is a good hillclimb turbo due to the way the torque can help the car a little more out of hair pins but this is in motorsport format not the street, and with aggressive tires that are heated to operating /racing temps.
      From my own experience, I disagree with the statement that more than 300whp is useless on the street, if you have a properly built car. Its not like you need to jump to a Golf R to have more, its still practical and cost effective. I would go as far as to say that if you want more than 250whp, that it is really more practical and cost effective if you put a Wavetrac in the car... unless you wanted the dynamics of open diff and were tracking it. On the street, more than 300wTQ is useless in a FWD car before 40mph, and more than 250whp spins in the lower gears no matter what tires you run unless you have a Wavetrac or a Welded FWD diff in the car. If you do a proper build and do the transmission before the power increase with the RIGHT diff you will find that it makes a massive difference in the straight line AND cornering performance. The Wavetrac is slightly more expensive than the other LSD options out there but its got that key straight line advantage vs those other options.
      Sources: I have a Fiesta ST. It makes 325whp 280wtq. GTX2860R Gen 2. Wavetrac LSD.

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good stuff thanks for sharing. What I said about more than 300whp being useless on the street must be paired with my other statement about the law of diminishing returns. Sure with enough mods and LSD and tires and etc. you can get the traction to keep the HP on the road but the COST of that is what I'm saying "no" to......by the time I'm spending the money needed to get more power and have it useable, I'm in RS or Golf R territory and my point is that I'm not spending that much on a Fiesta. If I wanted to spend that money I'd have bought a different car.

    • @D3M0N.5K1LL5
      @D3M0N.5K1LL5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      gray25xt not even close. Total mods on a 17k new (what new FiST can be bought these days) + lsd + install labor = 20k. Less if you DIY, 18k. Turbo with bare minimum to make it work incl. FMIC 2.5k. So... current out the door pricing on FiST+big turbo+lsd = under 21k still half the price of a new golf r which retails for 40k... or if you wanna look at 2015 prices when I bought my car, 25k out the door+6k MAX in minimum mods+install labor for the mods I’m talking about to the tune of total 31k MAX paying someone else to do all the work for you. And most people are going to install most of it themselves let’s be honest unless you are made of money, afraid of getting dirty, or both. So realistically it’s more like 28k to get it all in the car and working. 12k less then MSRP of a Golf R and still 8k less then RS which is now around actual MSRP out the door as we know they were initially way over sticker
      I’d hardly consider within 8-12k of a more expensive car to be in the pricing territory. That’s the price of a used Fiesta ST in that price gap lol

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meh, when you talk about being "afraid of getting dirty", not just any average garage mechanic like myself can install an LSD, that's unrealistic. I installed all my mods in the garage with help here and there but an LSD I am not qualified to do nor is the average person who enjoys wrenching.
      I looked at a brand new Golf R back in 2015 that was 26k out the door after incentives...add about 5k for an APR stage 3 setup and you're at nearly 500hp, a 10 second 1/4 mile and 0-60 in 3.4, all for $31k. So yeah your 31k for a big power Fiesta is not such a deal.
      Thanks for your input though!!! In any case my point here is that I'm not interested in doing more to my car; the way I have it setup right now is perfect for me, I don't need LSD, my tune takes care of traction issues....the power is right....the balance is really nice. To each his own!

    • @D3M0N.5K1LL5
      @D3M0N.5K1LL5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I second that. This engine is incredibly strong for a 1.6. It will put up with about 100whp per cylinder, or about 250whp per liter before it needs internal upgrades. I push 29psi / 300whp on the stock block and redline the car daily nearly launch it daily and do track days. Also, stock clutch takes it, cvs start to complain with launches after a while but the motor just keeps plugging along no piston slap, no rod knock, no significant wear noted in oil during changes. The 1.6 clock just keeps ticking. If running ethanol I would recommend upping the oil change interval. 3000 miles minimum 93 (E10), 1500 miles interval recommended e85. Roughly every 2000-2500 for e30 or other gasoline blends cut with e85.

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure what you're asking. One measurement I use is the condition of the motor mounts. Yes I redline every time I drive but I don't beat the car or rag it all the time. I recently installed motor mount inserts, and my stock mounts were in perfect shape which tells you something. Many folks are blowing the stock mounts out by driving aggressively, but mine were fine. Also some folks are blowing the inserts out as well by aggressive driving, mine are fine. So on the spectrum of car abuse even with me hammering it frequently I don't think the last 10,000 miles have been too hard on the car, judging from the condition of my mounts and my MPG.

    How difficult is the process of installing the x47 vs. the other “big” turbos (mountune MR265, etc)? I would like to be around 270-300 whp. I’m currently stage 1 with a custom tune from mountune for reference. Thanks for your updates and input with your build.

      Yeah a kid is no problem, in fact I have 4 kids, they will fit in the back just fine until about age 10-12, that's when their knees start pushing against the front seats from behind. But the Fiesta isn't a family hauler by any means, and getting a kid in that tiny backseat into a carseat would not be fun with all the bending over and what not, there isn't much room. So it will work but the first time you put the kid in an Accord or larger car you'd immediately realize how much easier it is.

    Hey gray what about the brakes a lot of people are running a big brake kit when surpassing the 300 HP

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm on stock brakes. In fact I'm still on my original brake pads at 37,000 miles now. The reason people upgrade the brakes is because of the whole "if you accelerate fast you have to be able to decelerate fast" mentality. However I think that's dumb. On the street you shouldn't be in a situation where you are ripping the car and then need to stop faster than normal. If you are you're likely driving in a way that is unsafe and illegal. Also people just bandwagon because they need something to spend their money on and go with the crowd. Hope that helps.

      Cool. Unless something unforeseen happens in my life I plan on keeping this car for a good many years to come but I'll keep it in mind. The thing is I've got more in the car than I could even sell it for so it's a losing proposition for me...$25k spent plus my labor, even with the mods it's only worth maybe $20k...depreciation mods are not a return investment....but even so I love the car and don't want to sell it anytime soon.
      In the meantime good luck finding a car, there are some great deals on both used and new Fiesta STs right now, I've heard of them brand new (stripped) for $17k and seen used ones with decent mileage for $13k. You could get my entire setup for under $20k on a used one if you weren't paying for the labor.

    While I understand your decision to not do an LSD... but at this point I would say the torque these make would make an LSD a serious upgrade and make it more feasible in multiple environments beyond just straight line speed. I'm considering doing it BEFORE I look at the turbo.

      LSD would be nice but the cost doesn't justify the gains for my driving style/needs. Do I want one wheel spinning or two? I'll save $1800 and skip this mod. Would be nice to have. You have to stop modding somewhere though. Been down that road with previous cars, learned my lesson.

      Good to know, I've had a variety of relatively quick cars before. The Fiesta ST is slow stock or even at stage 3. I wouldn't mind if it were as quick as my Cobalt SS/TC (which I left stock,), feels like it would need a turbo upgrade to get there.

    • @agentk4257
      @agentk4257 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryan Twigg all you really need that matters most for power is cobb stage 1 with drop in filter and upgrade intercooler and get a protune. If you’re still not happy get x47 with a downpipe with tune for e30. You can do full exhaust and intake but it won’t help a much powerwise to justify the price. Going beyond that is just way too expensive but if you want more than 300whp you’re looking at $2500 just for a wide body kit with wider wheels and tires. For that price you can do all the stuff I already mentioned. It wasn’t made or geared to be a drag racer but with that power there’s not much that can keep up with it on a backroad or a track. With 300hp and a lsd it is by far the most fun car to drive for the price.

      @@agentk4257 true, I've done stage 1 stuff and it's a blast to drive. I'm adding upgrades periodically just because it keeps me happy. Just did the full powerflex motor mount inserts per Jeff's previous vids ... Love that mod! Intercooler as you said could be my next "big" mod.

    I like your videos alot but i disagree on some stuff u said about the 👊. I think the car has plenty of power and torque from factory stock. It won't be a 5.0 or v6 accord in its stock form but it can keep up or pass alot of other cars on the road. Ill get a cusom tune and a ap and a bigger intercooler. 215-220 hp and 280-290 torque is plenty quick in a st for me. It has a great weight to power ratio. Just my humble opinion. Good luck with your fist.!

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are correct it's quick just not fast. Depends on your needs. When I say "its not fast" I'm saying it's not in the league of sports cars. I'm coming from a faster car (STi with turbo upgrade) so to me the ST in stock turbo form is slow.

    • @D3M0N.5K1LL5
      @D3M0N.5K1LL5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In its class its the fastest car out there though... If we compare apples to oranges there is always a faster car. Subcompact hot hatches there are not many. IIRC actual in class (subcompact) competition is... Hyundai Veloster Turbo(?), Fiat 500 Abarth, Chevy Sonic Turbo.... what else is there? Mini Cooper S? I've probably put some compact cars which would be the class above the FiST. It tends to already punch above its class to begin with. Comparing the car to a WRX or STi is an apples to oranges comparison as those cars are classed higher. In Forza you'd have a 'C' class for the Fiesta ST and a 'B' class for the WRX and an 'A' for the STi probably lol

    Rather have the cobb turbo upgrade you get power everywhere not just on mid rpm and top end only

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is no Cobb turbo upgrade available. You need to do further research.
      The only place this car needs more power is at mid and high rpm, there is already far too much power at the low end, even from the factory the tune is significantly limited to that the tires don't roast, and power upgrades only exacerbate that issue.

The ported manifold might help a bit, it could also be that I had higher octane because of the race gas concentrate still in the tank even though I was on the 93 tune. Stock fuel system?

    • @gray25xt
      @gray25xt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. 93 octane is 275-280hp, add ethanol or WMI or RG concentrate to get near to 300. Aux fuel will take you higher maybe 315-320 but it hurts mpg more and again back to my thesis of this video, over 300 hp the car gets unbalanced imho.

    • @D3M0N.5K1LL5
      @D3M0N.5K1LL5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually doesnt hurt mpg more. The split second controller is hooked to a hobbs switch and only turns on around 24psi of boost to supplement the Direct Injection. If you are hyper mileing for MPG you are not building more than 5 psi of boost if any boost at all so you will not even use the aux fuel or meth injection system as they all use boost switches set to turn on at high boost where the factory system would have begun to lean out...
