    The buttons aren’t strictly wrong on the ATF canteen; blank buttons were introduced as an economy measure midway through the war.

    I have two Whermacht canteens,i got them from a Veteran who got hold of them in Hamburg at the German surrender,the hook of one is flat the other rounded,i believe that until 1941 the cups were painted black then it was ordered they be painted either tan or green (i cant remember as it is a while since i looked it up) but the order was not followed through in any big way as i suppose there was more pressing things needing attention and soon after the cups were just left in the original aluminium in any case.I would not drink from any original WW2 canteen,lead in the paint and our British ones were enameled and enamel at that time had lead in its make up.

      David Mcintyre german canteens didn’t have paint inside, it was only on the outside of the cup. Some enamel ones did have paint in them but most originals had rust in them anyways.
      Regular steel ones are stage to drink from as long as you properly clean them.

      @@worldwarguy459 Yes the inside of the cups are just bare metal,the enameled British water bottle is dangerous to drink from due to a high lead content.

    When I got the canteen From at the front i used sand paper to soften the cap so it won't feel like your gonna cut your fingers while opening it up.

    Walter Girg: Scotch-Brite spun around the repro cap will dull it down. Also beware repro Cups, some have the aluminum strap retaining loop (Rectangular) made to thin and they tend to curl up after torqueig the strap.I have replaced my Cups with originals,where the Aluminum is thicker.You can see your ATF one is already curling up.

    Great canteen review! You hit two inaccurate repro features that I've been trying to fix on my impression gear 1) the number of turns to unscrew the cap from the bottle , and 2) the use of the non-floral buttons on the repro covers. The ATF canteen is great except for these two flaws (could live with the rough cap edge, questionable clip configuration, and slightly off cup configuration) . Yes the ATF is nice but for the price, it should have at least the button flaw addressed. Do you or anyone out there know where a new bottle with a cap that unscrews with less turns can be found (link?), if there's a source for the floral snaps or a .750 liter cover equivalent to the ATF one that has the correct floral snaps.

    I just received my new repro canteen and the knurling on the cap is a bit more rounded and les sharp than yours. Still sticks out the same though. Also looks like on mine there are 5 rows of threads on the bottle mouth instead of what looks like 6 on the one in this video?

    I picked up one of these canteens a few days ago and the canteen is dated 1935 and has a jsd stamped next to it, i was wondering if you knew what that means. Great video

    I've seen in other video that they ordered cups to be painted green during the war,

    Can you drink from originals,
    Or do they rust?

    • @worldwarguy459
      @worldwarguy459  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aluminum does not rust. Check my canteen cleaning video to know how you clean it safely.

    • @Throckmorton_the_great
      @Throckmorton_the_great 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldnt, rust on the inside is bad for you medically, some canteens were painted on the inside which isnt good for you either plus I wouldnt risk damaging an original bottle. Hessenantique makes a pretty good repro of the canteen if youre looking for one that wont break the bank.

    • @Throckmorton_the_great
      @Throckmorton_the_great 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again, Aluminum doesnt rust but it can corrode. I wouldnt take the chance when there are good repro bottles out there

    I just bought a canteen from sof and it had a bunch of like aluminum dust in it. I rinsed it out but I don't know if it's safe to drink out of. Did the atf one have this too?

    • @worldwarguy459
      @worldwarguy459  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did not have that. you could use boiling water or even vinegar to help clean it just in case.

    • @rayfeltz8477
      @rayfeltz8477 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      World War Guy I rinsed it out with hot water, but its not really a cleanliness thing. Its more I'm worried about ingesting small metallic particulate.

      taste it, if there is a problem, clean it again. If not you should be fine.

    Where do you recommend to get an affordable German canteen? All the ones I’ve found are either $60+ or $50 but takes 3 months to ship from China!

      I don’t know if this could work but you could end up buying and using a Swedish or Bulgarian army canteen. Though I don’t know how accurate they are, it’s a considerable option.

    • @worldwarguy459
      @worldwarguy459  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      oresmart those canteens are different in style than the German ones. The Swedish canteens have a larger mouth piece and I believe are different in overall size. The Bulgarians would only be okay to use if you go for the coconut canteen style.

    Dumb question but I'm not finding the answer online, on the wooden canteens is the inside metal as well or actual wood?

    • @worldwarguy459
      @worldwarguy459  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were metal surrounded by wood.

    How would one quickly access their water? All the straps make it difficult and the pouch is super tight

    • @worldwarguy459
      @worldwarguy459  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some soldiers would simply put the cup in their bread bag.
