    The cloth over the bottle had a reason. If you wet the cloth it would keep the water from heating up to much in the summer heat (In Romania in the flatlands it gets to 45°C or hotter) So the wet cloth would've been a little help from stopping the water to get too hot. Although I think if left in the sun it would've heated up, even with the cloth wet. I could ask my grandfather he was in the Romanian Military as "Maistru Militar Principal" which is a high rank in the engineers part.

      I forgot to mention this about the cover in my video. I have done this many times with my other canteens when its hot outside. If you get any info from your grandfather, I would be very interested. Thanks for watching my video and for commenting.

    The wool cover is to keep in the winter water hot for some time and in the summer you are supposed to wet the wool cover with water after you filed. Evaporating water would keep the water inside the canteen colder for some time.

    ok dude, romania WAS a communist dictatorship until 1989 when the national army disposed of Ceausescu, the dictator, then it transited into a democracy like most eastern block countries at the time.... after that we joined NATO and then the European Union... romania is not a communistic dictatorship but a democratic country altho corruption is still a big problem. there are no more communist countries in the world except Cuba and of course North Korea.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes. You are correct. What I meant to say in my video is the canteen I was showing was from, at the time (1970's) a communist country. Sorry for the mix up. Thanks for watching my video and for your comment.

    Well, it looks like you do learn something new every day, :D
    I happen to have both the bread bag and the canteen, sadly the metal hook from the strap was gone when I received it, still I am trying to find a workaround it, either a new one or some form of replacement, the wool canvas has seen better days, was a bit ripped but after a quick bit of hand sewing I was able to patch up the cloth cover pretty well, granted I might have to do some heavy patching at 1 point in time or get a new wool cover when I am not using the whole thing I will use the cup as regular metal coffee mug like my stainless steel coffee mug, I find it more durable as sometimes I tend to place cups down like I would when using hammer, thankfully not a sledgehammer...yet.
    After seeing this I am still standing by the decision to acquire either a West or East German one, granted I am more attached to the former do to colour wise, granted the canteens respectively were either way made from East German Army production, so top quality in that, sadly there is no way to get my hands on an original Victorinox GAK 1976-2003 model,
    Btw. the correct term is in my country case was a Communist state, granted that damage had already been done and the coop lead by even more corrupt officials did not help, sometimes I wish I could print out a list of people who were part of the communist party and start a witch hunt, complete with burning people at the stake and televising it live! :D While in the case of East Germany is was a territorial block,
    Anyhow a good review, a very calming and relaxing one I might add too and hope to see more you in the future, all the best and have a nice day! :)

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for your comment and for watching my video. Whichever kit you acquire (East or West German), should make you happy and serve you well. If you happen to run across a post ww2 Austrian kit, you might like that one as well. I have all three and they are all good kits having the second inner cup that is very useful. Good luck on your hunt!

      My thanks, and look forward the seeing more of your videos, funny enough I have in my possession an authentic Adrianov wrist compass, minus the leather strap that was gone, working on finding either a new one or a paracord one, like the Nam ones,
      But now after thinking about it want to get both the West & East German Mess Kits along with a WW2 German one too, an Ezbit portable pocket stove, but I also have my eyes set on some USMC & GI, canteens & mess kits, both the regular stainless steel ones, big one & butterfly handle, portable oven, and perhaps if I am lucky enough at one point a full set of USMC, Army uniforms, fatigues, boots, shirt, flack vest & helmet, along with other miscellaneous items, a fully functional Fulton MX991/U Flashlight anything its more for my love of War Memorabilia, granted I at the very least hope I get a authentic reproduction that says made in the USA & Germany for each respectively, because I so sick & tired of "Made in China" meme gags, bad jokes,

    Was able to purchase a romanian canteen set yesterday from a big military surplus shop here in South Korea. Its brand new(old stock) from the 70s or the 80s. Its a bit crudely made and a little rough around the edges. Sharp aluminum bits sticking out of the mouth of the canteen can slash your lips as you drink from it. But nothing that a little DIY wont fix. Other than that its a great collectors item from the Cold War Era and i' ll be using it for bushcrafting. Have fun john!!!

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one I have is made of thin material so I think it would wear out much quicker than a bag made of a good grade of canvas. Maybe earlier E. German bags were better. But I’m not sure about that.

      Nomad 75 Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy my channel! How I clean them is with a vinegar and water mixture and let it soak to remove scale and deposits and then either boil water in them if it’s a metal canteen or pour boiling water in if it’s a plastic canteen. Then repeat if necessary. Usually with old surplus, it’s a long process.
