The "Contact" thing the Doctor and Master do between each other is actually a throwback to one of the Classic Doctor eras (possibly Pertwee) as they were able to do that back then.

Back in 1999, while Doctor Who was off the air, the BBC did a (non-canonical) Doctor Who comedy skit for Comic Relief called The Curse of Fatal Death, I highly recommend checking it out. It was on TH-cam last time I checked. But, anyway, the Master's line in this episode about being trapped on Earth for 77 years always reminds me of that Comic Relief skit. Meanwhile, Paula's comment about whether or not the Timeless Child plot thread pays off has me tugging my collar like Charles Nelson Reilly and going "Hmm-hmm!"

I still think this season is a lot better than the last, and I LOVE this incarnation of the Master, but one thing I actually took exception to was the Master blatantly murdering several people in front of the Doctor and the Doctor just...stands there. I get 13 is a less angry Doctor than 12, or even 10 and 11, but the fact that she doesn't even shout once for him to stop feels like an egregious error.

Despite this story's title very clearly riffing on the James Bond film Skyfall, I actually find that this story has way more in common with that film's sequel, Spectre. Both stories fill their first halves with loads of fun Bondian elements and tropes and setpieces; a random new character is revealed to be a major villain from the series' past; said villain is revealed to be trying to torment the hero due to some mysterious element/retcon from the character's past; the supporting cast spend most of the time doing battle with a bland secondary villain whose evil plan covers ideas like surveillance, increased usage of technology and mismanagement of data. Oh, and there's the obvious point of comparison, namely the fact that both stories are honestly rubbish.
If the first part of this story suggested that Chibnall had learned from series 11's mistakes and series 12 was going to be a major return to form, then part two completely dashes all those hopes, because I genuinely think this is one of the worst scripts ever written for the show. The story is a complete mess, with the Doctor and the Master engaging in a cat-and-mouse chase across time and space, while the companions are stuck in a tedious remake of "The Sound of Drums". The three of them get some rather nice moments, such as the conversation at the construction site, and the potential of them having to step up in the Doctor's absence and save the day is a really interesting one. Unfortunately, their entire subplot ends up being a complete waste of time, as they basically do nothing but run from place to place and get taunted over the phone by Lenny Henry. They don't even get to save the day at the end, or even contribute to the resolution, the Doctor literally fixes the problem and defeats all the villains OFFSCREEN. Speaking of the villains, having established themselves as genuinely threatening and formidable opponents in part one, it's frustrating that all of them, with the exception of the Master, are completely wasted here. The Kassavin are a complete non-presence at the end, and Barton is reduced to just being the Master's lackey, who does nothing aside from killing his mum and delivering his now memetic 'plane thieves' burn. And again, what is with this era and its continued decision to the let the villains get away scot-free?!
I admit that I enjoy the episode's A-plot a lot more, the whole 'chase through time' plotline is a very interesting and fun way to set this episode apart from its predecessor, it's fun to see the Doctor taking on historical figures as pseudo-companions, and both Jodie Whittaker and Sacha Dhawan give excellent performances (even if the latter often veers too close to 'panto-villain' territory for liking). But even then, this section of the storyline carries all sorts of bugbears. Our introduction to both Ada and Noor consists of the Doctor reciting the first paragraph of both women's Wikipedia pages, and neither are allowed to really develop as characters. And the fact that this whole subplot turns out to be nothing more than setup for the reveal that Gallifrey has been destroyed AGAIN is more than a little disheartening. Which in turn brings me to the thing that really sinks this section of the episode, and arguably the entire episode, namely how this story fits into the larger universe of the show. This episode is definitely the point where you start to feel like Chibnall is pulling a 'Rise of Skywalker' on the Moffat era, because so much of the plot beats in this story feel like they're actively undoing key developments of that era. I've mentioned the second destruction of Gallifrey, which, aside from completely devaluing the triumphant end of "The Day of the Doctor", feels like Chibnall trying to replicate the Davies era, without taking into account the context that made it work back then. There's also the return of the Doctor non-consensually wiping people's minds, as if they learned absolutely nothing from the events of "Hell Bent".
And then, most damning of all, there's the handling of the Doctor and the Master's relationship. Full disclosure, despite the way "The Doctor Falls" ended, I knew that the Master would inevitably come back at some point, and I fully expected they would be back as a villain. Even so, I didn't expect Chibnall to completely wreck Missy's character journey as thoroughly as he did here. The Doctor spent upwards of 70 years trying to rehabilitate Missy, and there's not even a token mention of the fact that Missy actually turned good, even for the briefest moment. And even if you imagine Dhawan's version to be chronologically before Missy, the relationship between the two characters is still awfully handled. What makes the Doctor/Master dynamic interesting is the fact that they used to be close friends, and when the dynamic is at its best, such as with Pertwee/Delgado or Capaldi/Gomez, you should be able to see the close bond they once had, and arguably still do. There's none of that here, Dhawan's Master is shown to want nothing to do with the Doctor other than their complete destruction, and the Thirteenth Doctor is shown to have a frankly shocking lack of amiability or affection for them. Nowhere is this utterly warped handling of the dynamic better demonstrated than in the confrontation on the Eiffel Tower, which (and I say this without hyperbole) may just be the single worst scene in the entire history of the show.
It's one thing entirely to have the Doctor hand her former best friend over to the Nazis, but having her then remove his perception filter to reveal him as a non-White person is a complete misunderstanding of their dynamic. And even factoring out the fact that it's the Doctor and the Master involved here, this moment is still unforgivably rancid. I'm genuinely baffled at the fact that nobody, NOBODY, involved in the production of this story, at any point in time, actually turned to Chibnall and said "hey Chris, maybe don't write the scene where the hero of your goofy sci-fi show for kids exposes a character as a POC and hands them over to an evil group responsible for the deaths of six million people, and then later suggest that they were sent to a concentration camp like the one at Dachau, where, coincidentally, Noor Inayat Khan was actually sent to at the end of the war and then executed". And what kind of message is this scene trying to convey anyway? "Rosa" was all about how 'racism is bad', so is this episode adding the caveat of 'unless you can use it to get your enemies a worse punishment'? This scene is the most disgusting out-of-character moment ever written for the character of the Doctor - it's cruel, it's cowardly, and it's a fundamental misunderstanding of everything that the Doctor is supposed to stand for.
Sorry for the ramble, but I really had a lot to get off my chest with regard to part two of "Spyfall". To its credit, there are some moments are do really like - the whole gag with the Doctor helping the companions land the plane was really fun, I enjoyed the laser shoes ("don't make me do the old soft shoe shuffle" is a genuinely funny line), Segun Akinola's score was excellent again, and the performances are really strong across the board. However, these moments can't cover up the fact that this episode is a convoluted unfocussed mess, that fails to give the vast majority of its characters anything meaningful to do, and features a truly repulsive and repugnant scene that completely derails the fun vibe that part one seemed to set up

The Doctor turning off the Master's perception filter and tossing him to the Nazis as a POC (essentially using his apparent non-whiteness as a weapon) is still one the most shocking things I've seen on the show. I'd almost forgotten about it, because I blocked it out, but yeah...that was disgusting. 🤬
Now I kinda wish I had a memory wipe of all of that tripe, myself. Talk about completely misunderstanding the Doctor/Master relationship. 😯

The re-destruction of Gallery annoyed the hell out of me, too - on several levels. Apart from devaluing what went before, it devalues itself because when you *repeat* a cataclysm it starts to feel meaningless... Before it happened as the ultimate event in the most terrible war the galaxy had ever seen, and this time it happened because a man with a beard got cross. What??? you mention attempts to repeat the RTD era, but I think the Chibnall era frequently feels like he looked around for ideas that people liked previously and wheeled out inferior repeats - including one idea that... I can't mention it at this point for reason of spoilers but I honestly think his reading of it feels not like a fan finally deciding to explore a long-standing theory, but rather somebody who flicked through some episode guides and found a fan idea that he used without particularly thinking about it or its implications...

I love how they resolve the plane thing (it IS very much like Blink), I love how this Doctor interacts with the Master and the two little-known female historical figures she teams up with, how hopeful she is in her speech about the war. The Master- Doctor relationship is just so intense here. Didn't fully get into how the spy plot line resolved, though Graham, Ryan, and Yaz having to work without the Doctor was brilliant. Be on the lookout for more parallels to Season 3 this season, I spotted more than just the Master and that Blink reference as the season went on. (I wonder if that has something to do with Chibnall "42" for Season 3)

The Doctor gives Ada a snippet of a spoiler since she doesn't marry Lord King until a year after this and he doesn't become Earl of Lovelace until 1838. (But she wipes Ada's memory afterward, other than apparently the inspiration about the future of computation..)

My only complaints with this story is why didn't The Master change his TARDIS and left it as an Australian Outback House? The Master is never that clumsy he never does that.
I would had loved to have seen the Master's console room unfortunately we only saw the top half of the house.
Why did the writers destroy Gallifrey? again after in just got resolved in the 50th only 7 years prior i was really jacked off about that.
I thought Lenny Henry was wasted he was basically a mummys boy who just wanted to to get attention from his mother i really hate especially with modern tv and movies with villains and their parental issues its old hat.
On the positives I liked the scenes where Graham uses his laser shoes its goofy but funny.
The telepath between The Doctor and The Master is not a new idea it was done in "The Three Doctors" and "The Five Doctors" when the Doctors make contact.
Also the scene where The Doctor and The Master talk face to face when they talk about Jodrell Bank was a reference to The Fourth Doctor's death.

_"I thought Lenny Henry was wasted he was basically a mummys boy ... villains and their parental issues [are] old hat"_ -- Agreed. In fact, the story would have worked just as well if they'd left Barton as a typical Doctor Who baddie, without bothering to explain his mummy-issues to us. Ultimately, that scene where he killed his mother was basically padding, with the sole purpose of telling us what a nasty piece of work Barton was. Well, we knew that already.

"racism, but for good!" - Chibnall, probably.
I wasn't super feeling it up until now, but this is where I kind of checked out. So odd and out of character for the Doctor to do that. Capaldi just punched a racist in the face, and now the Doctor is using racism to their advantage? The Doctor intended for the master to be killed because of the colour of their skin... like... *what?*
It's also not super historically accurate, I think. I believe the Legion Freies Indien existed at this time? I don't think they would have handled it that way? It feels like it was done just to shock the audience? ew?

    • @kateorgera5907

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Indian Legion was indeed part of the German SS, and what's more they were based in France at around the time this episode happened. So Chibnall missed an opportunity to explain the Master's working for the Nazis without needing the lazy excuse of a Perception Filter to mask his Asian appearance... because he wouldn't have had to! Of course, Chibs would need to find a different way for the Doctor to defeat the Master, but at least the audience would have learned about an interesting, and unexpected, part of history.
