Im getting near to retirement now when I was a young man i used to do some wood turning to make round cases for musical boxes and clocks, finding and watching your work here on you tube has inspired me to get back in to it your work is amazing and so creative.
G'day Reb, Another Al Tastic Presentation.!! ... I've only been Addicted to turning for 9 months, all your video's are Great.!! You're teaching 9600 followers/subscribers with, Great Products, Tools and an Attitude that Encourages Persistence to be a better turner.!! ... Cheers from Downunder.!!
Al I really like this video. As always it shows a piece of the craftsman. That vase with the inclusions is one beautiful piece. You will get it worked out... you are a very intelligent person
Hi Al,,, The vase is awesome and I know you will perfect your hollowing system! I've worked on a LOT of homemade mechanical projects and find it funny how I can stare at them wondering how to make them work but just can't figure it out.Later in the night I'll be watching TV and the answer to my mechanical problem pops out of nowhere!! Funny how the mind works!! Thanks for another informative and creative video! Tom
I have subscribed for about 2 months now. I really love your videos!! I am a custom knife maker, but have made a living as a carpenter most of my life. I love the way you can see into the wood too see what it wants to be! I also love the way you are willing to do things outside the norm. This vase is most beautiful. The dark imperfections make it really pop! Keep making these great videos and stay safe!!
Well Well,....... I know it's been ages since I last heard from you. I am sure that if you were closer you could just take it seeing you're such a big fan.It always amazes me on what people react to. this is far from being amongst a favorite piece of mine.
Lovely vase Al, subtle colours look great as a background to the inclusions & spalting. Very elegant piece & pleased you are getting the hollowing bar to where you're happy with it. All the best from the UK Regards, Geof
somehow I got hooked watching woodturning videos. I have not purchased a lathe yet, but will do so soon. I'm afraid it will consume me and I won't get anything else done or use my other tools, lol. thanks All, take care buddy. keep 'em coming.
Thanks be ready for an addiction like no other just keep in mind there is a huge learning cure to the point that you respect the tool and feel comfortable with every cut. start slow. Take care
Hello again Al, I am so impressed with they way you stick at a job, you are a trooper sir, I know that you will keep innovating the design of this tool until you get it where you want it, and the vase is already very nice, I found watching this, and all your videos exciting and interesting, so I better try to stay calm through the next one, :)
Thank you my friend. You know it's a me thing. the more I fail the more determined I am to succeed. This will sure be ongoing project. I have done a few improvements already heavier tool arm and added a laser to it. Working great.Take care
That is a beautiful piece and interesting seeing the hollowing.I thought you would have to have a beefier bar for the long reach. It looks like you used wood blocking at the bolt points on your elbow to avoid crushing. Good idea.
Thank you my friend. Yeah I have been working on different cutters. I have changed to tool arm and have also added a laser to it. Working great so far.Take care
As a new subscriber, I get irrationally excited every week when your videos come out Al. Yours are always the first videos I watch when I see them in my subscriptions page. The vase turned out amazing.
Thank you for watching and commenting my friend. I appreciate it sorry I have not answered sooner but been under the weather for a couple of weeks now. Trying to get back on the swing of things.
Good to see you using the hurricane gouge. That's my next purchase. And really interesting watching your tool development. Oh and lest I forget, gorgeous vase!
Thank you my friend. I like the long reach on the tool but it's wearing down quickly. I have ground about 2" off this tool but than again I use it almost exclusively.Take care
Hi Al. I really like your videos. I thought we were going to see your laser in action. Or did I miss something? To start your hollowing, can you not get a bigger drill bit, like an inch and a half, or two inches with a longer shaft? Or get a bigger drill bit, and have someone weld a longer shaft on it? Or a forstner bit with a longer shaft? Or would it be too wobbly?
Hi Steve, Thank you for watching and commenting. No I don't think you missed anything here. I really can't use the laser when using the steady rest. I will probably make a steady rest that will work with it or resort to a camera that monitors my tool. As far as using a larger fostner bit. Yeah you could but you have to keep in mind that drilling deep requires a lot of torque and running at slow speeds required to drill you just don't have that. I find that as long as I can fit a toll in the hole that is all I need. I do have a shaft extension for the fostner bits.Take care
Dear Mr Furtado I am enjoying your Woodturning experiences, So Much that I am looking for a WoodTurning Lathe. Can you tell me what type of lathe you have, it seems to have been with you for sometime, can you tell me about the modifications you have maybe had to make, I liked the arm extensions from this video. You have Mastered the art of visually seeing what might be created from a piece of wood which must inc the way the grain is running and what might take place when you go against the grain? Do you have a class or some DvD's that you have made, You are a wonderful Teacher and it is a pleasure to watch what you create, and explanations you have. Thank-You for Sharing: Sincerely; Robert Serr
Thank you very much. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Well that is a loaded question if you have seen many of my videos you realize that I encourage people to start turning with any lathe and not a manufacturer. I do use an old Delta belt driven lathe. Once I saw that I wanted to turn some larger pieces that what the lathe had to offer I made up some riser blocks to increase it's capability. Recently I added a VFD for electronic speed control rather than jump belts all the time but they both work. Take care my friend. We don't always see the best possibilities with any piece of wood but as we advance we notice things that could better suit the piece of wood. Key is always be looking at what is coming from your cuts and stop when you see something you like.
Hi Shelly. Thanks for watching. I am probably not the best person to ask that as I tell most people that it's an art piece and not made for live flowers. If you really want to put live flowers you can coat the inside with an epoxy resin. That will work.
Another very beautiful piece Al! I love your videos, keep them coming! BTW... you said in your video you didn't have calipers. An easy solution for that is a wire coat hanger. Cut and bend to get two points. Quick and easy remedy for not having or having broken calipers!
Thank you my friend. funny you mention that as I had been thinking about it. not so much for seeing but for filming. seeing I have a large monitor in front of the lathe that is a great idea for that purpose as well.Take care
Thank you my friend. Well I am no engineer so to give you those specks would be impossible from me. I can tell you it takes all the jerking from the arms and holds up well to the normal catches. Take care
Hello, Al I have watched with great interest; many of your vids ... magical! If I may ask; within this video, what is that support thing (that has three little wheels inside) that supports the back end of your work as you are cutting out the inside? What is it called; and what make is that one? Many thanks. William (Hampshire UK)
That is called a steady rest and everyone on TH-cam has made one including me LOL No brand just a shop made jig easy to make. just search make a steady rest
Was this a wet turning? Or green. I forget what you call it. I only ask because your tools kept gumming up. Can you maybe show us what that looks like some time? I mean the gummy wood stuff. Is it sticky? Can you make a snowball out of it? Thanks friend.
Thanks for watching and yes this was green wood, It wasn't sticky per say even though it does stick to the tool I get that quite a bit with different woods if they are green. This was a wood that had no movement after it was and changed with amazing colors. If you saw the R2D2 turning I did with my grandson Colin. that was the same wood believe it or not. I did a few pieces with that wood.
Even though I am not a believer that one grind is better than the next. I believe it is a personal preference. You probably wouldn't like my grind but I will see on that.
Im getting near to retirement now when I was a young man i used to do some wood turning to make round cases for musical boxes and clocks, finding and watching your work here on you tube has inspired me to get back in to it your work is amazing and so creative.
Thank you my friend for watching and the wonderful compliment. I know if you get back to wood turning you'll never stop again Take care.

Al that is a sharp looking vase. Look forward to seeing your tool rest idea and replaceable cutter heads. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you my friend. the tool rest still trying to figure out material and how to approach it without welding or large taps.Take care
Al I really like this video. As always it shows a piece of the craftsman. That vase with the inclusions is one beautiful piece.
You will get it worked out... you are a very intelligent person
Thank you my friend for the nice compliment and the confidence. I have done a few improvements that seem to be working great. Take care

Beautiful Al I can't even imagine making something that nice.

Thank you my friend. I guess that is part of developing and experimenting to see what works and improve on what's not.Take care

Jim
Thank you my friend. that ain't happening. I like turning too much LOLTake care

Thank you my friend. I am pretty sure it's sweet gum.Take care
Well spun, well told. Thank you.
Thank you my friend.Take care
That is a beautiful piece and interesting seeing the hollowing.I thought you would have to have a beefier bar for the long reach. It looks like you used wood blocking at the bolt points on your elbow to avoid crushing. Good idea.
Thank you my friend. yes it is stuffed with wood but what keeps it from crushing is the bushings from the 1/2" tubeTake care
Yep, another thumbs up from me Al.
Thank you my friend.Take care
very nice Vase my friend and it turned out great i love those spalted you got going on around it makes the vase very special!
Thank you very much. Yes if there was no spalting on this piece it would have been very boring.
Another wonderful piece. By the sounds of it maybe you should look at maybe trying to make a short bull gouge bit to fit on the end of your arm.
Thank you my friend. Yeah I have been working on different cutters. I have changed to tool arm and have also added a laser to it. Working great so far.Take care
Like Your pieces&efforts great determination Al

Beautiful vase. I pretty much turn a vase as do you. I very often have requests for a vase that will hold water. Any tricks that you can suggest???
Hi Shelly. Thanks for watching. I am probably not the best person to ask that as I tell most people that it's an art piece and not made for live flowers. If you really want to put live flowers you can coat the inside with an epoxy resin. That will work.

Thanks for watching and the advice. I had actually made a set a long time ago but only used it a coupe of times than trashed them. Take care
It's a beauty
Thank you my friend.Take care
Hi Rebel, You mad that look ezy, But I no how damned hard it is iv dune a cupel of them and that arm im going to try and mack, thanks mate,Lofty
Thank you very much Yeah when they are deep they are harder to make Good luck
Al - How about a Dremel tool with small saw blade strapped to the end of the arm? Or is that cheating?
Thank you very much Tom. it almost sounds like a great idea. but I think I will leave it to traditional tools just in case someone is watching. LOL
You should attach a small camera on the tool so you can see what happen inside.
Thank you my friend. funny you mention that as I had been thinking about it. not so much for seeing but for filming. seeing I have a large monitor in front of the lathe that is a great idea for that purpose as well.Take care
Hi Al. I have a question for you. Have you ever turned Hemlock?
Unfortunately no. I hear it cuts really well.
so, what is the tolerances(vertical) of your new creation of the hollower?
Thank you my friend. Well I am no engineer so to give you those specks would be impossible from me. I can tell you it takes all the jerking from the arms and holds up well to the normal catches. Take care
very goood
Thank you Carlos

if you get a chance can we get a close up of the grind of your bowl gouge
Even though I am not a believer that one grind is better than the next. I believe it is a personal preference. You probably wouldn't like my grind but I will see on that.
Is that log from a tree limb?
Yep thanks for watching
Man, that is stunningly beautiful
