    A couple of months i used your video to fix my parking brake module and I've now just had to fix my E70 front passenger side lock, great video, really appreciate what you're doing as it allows people like me to repair our BMW vehicles and save literally thousands of dollars in labour charges

    Sure am glad you posted this… just did mine on my 2011 X5. Your video was incredibly helpful. Thanks very, very much!

      How was it? I need to do it on my passenger rear. Did the insulation glue stick back when putting it back together?

    • @cliff9745
      @cliff9745 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was exactly as he describes, I really took my time and the entire process took only a little over an hour with no hiccups or surprises. The insulation peels off in one piece and you cut the glue strands, but it all re-sticks perfectly. Just go around the entire circumference and press it down firmly once you’re done. Mine didn’t tear at all.

    By far the most comprehensive video. Thanks! Mine failed for the driver's side and there are a couple of differences: (i) instead of removing the handle, you need to pry off the window switch, disconnect the power harness and two torx bolts; (ii) to remove our "prize", you need to loosen the Allen bolt for the key lock cylinder behind the rubber cover on the door and pull the cylinder out enough for the bolt to disengage from the actuator. For the grab handle cable I just left it on the door panel and unhooked the Bowden cable as you show. Also, when reassembling the panel, be sure to line up the metal clips with the slots along the top of the panel before snapping everything in. Otherwise repeated mating/de-mating could loosen those round plastic clips. I also put a chair beneath the panel when removing all the cables.

      Hey, I was just wondering. Could you instruct me how to open up the door? Since the door actuator is dead, I have no idea how to open it up to get it replaced. I would really appreciate it. Thanks. (BMW X5 2010 E70)

    Just did the repair myself. 2010 X5 passenger door. The lock did not work then started working weeks before it completely broke. No clicking at the actuator when it broke. Great video very helpful. One of the torx screws is longer then the others. I think it was the lower door hand screw but not sure. One tip is that my door lock was jammed and the door would not open at all when broken. I replaced the two blue 15 amp fuses 27 and 28 in front fuse panel but did not make any difference. Sometimes these blow out when the actuator starts to break. These are all the way to the front and toward the driver side of fuse panel at the right knee of passenger. A very small person had to be turned upside down to replace these fuses with door shut. But now that I have explained how to open the jammed door you wont have that problem. I finally tried grabbing the black popup door lock button with pliers and pulling up with alot of force WITHOUT USING the silver door lock level on the door and the door did open. The black tip pulled off but is easy to fit back on. When the door lock actuator broke it creates a jam between these two and they move together and there are not supposed to move together indicating some type of jam. Do to the difficulty of the job I did pay $240.00 for the OEM part. All the electrical connections on the door panel required alot of force to remove there are not really any release buttons on them. One needs to raise the window to get the large actuator part out the door. I also did not seen any airbag on the door. I had disconnected the battery to be sure. They usually had an airbag label on the door if it has one. Also those two door hand screws must be removed to remove the door panel. Also for this passenger door you should not try to remove the lock cable from the door panel, just remove the cable from the door lock actuator. Some people have complained that the three bolt holes on the actuator are not threaded and this causes no problem. I was extra careful and hand tightened the each bolt into each hole prior to install and then used a tool to screw them in about 4 full turns to create the start to the threads then I kept track which one went into to each hole. The bolts are tapered at the end and are strong enough to create the threads as put them in. You might not need to prethread them like I did but it might be safer. I was also careful to make sure they line up straight as you tighten them. The most difficult part of the job is getting the cable that goes the outside door handle off the actuator. You pop off the top part with the tip of large flat blade screw driver, then you have to slide down the lower white plastic part just a mm so that it can leave the black channel and pop out. You put it back with the reverse order. There is also two small black clips that hold electrical wires so they will not be snagged by the window going up and down, just just pop them out using tip of large flat blade screw driver. One plugs in from the window side the other has to be removed from the old actuator and plugged in at the bottom edge of the replacement actuator. This is not that difficult once you know how to do it.

    Thank you - great detailed video.
    I will be doing driver's door (little bit diff) but my e70 has Soft-close doors, so i have an additional motor connected to the latch mechanism, hanging down from it. Not going to be fun I can tell already. Watching a few other videos that include that extra function.
    ***PLEASE change the battery in your smoke alarm!!! It costs $2 and can save your family's life. (I thought I heard kids in the background?)
    Not only that but the really annoying beeping will stop. Don't know how you stand it..

    Great video - This vehicle definitively has its faults. This doors actuator is one of them. Great to find videos for all of them.

    I just changed my actuator for my E70 2010 3.0L, thank you very much for the tutorial Sir. It costes $45+8$ tools in less than 35min. All the beat

    Thanks this was useful. The hardest part was just pulling out the wires and making sure you don’t mess up the plastic connections.
    Putting the door panel back would be helpful with an assistant

    Awesome video, much appreciated. Got same problem with my 2010 X5. Hoping it is just the actuator. Checked fuses and all ok. Just the passenger side front lock is not responding but I can still open the door using the interior handle which pops the lock up.

    Hi buddy, I'm facing the same situation. My actuator failed. Since the front passenger door couldn't be opened, I tried to reach from the top door panel, removed the cable connected from the door opener to a metal clip from the actuator. But I couldn't open the door by pressing hard on that metal clip. Please instruct me how to open the door 🙏🏻. Thank you so much for your help🙏🏻

    Great detailed video! I have the symptoms of occasionally all 4 doors not unlocking when using the fob, BUT the tailgate does unlock. (2007 X5 e70). I wouldn't expect all 4 door actuators to be faulty at once - but does the drivers door actuator control all the others? Would you think I have a problem with the drivers door actuator or the control module? (98% of the time everything works fine). Would you also recommend disconnecting the battery when doing this repair?

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, it's always a good idea to disconnect the battery. For a job like this I would say its not a must. Yes the drivers door is the master lock, the position of it dictates the position of the rest of the locks. If it is failing internally I could see how that would force the remaining locks to stay locked when you try and unlock it. You can verify this buy just manually pushing down the lock on the drivers side, you'll notice that the reaming locks get the signal from the control module and also lock.

    How did you like the e70? I'm thinking of getting one. Think the n55 is more reliable than the n54? The x5 would replace my 335. Looks like thewp is easyer on the e70

      Get the 35d, delete emissions equipment and tune. Best E70

    Hey, I have an x5 e70 2007... My door locks and unlocks but the outside door handle doesn't unlock the door, the inside works perfectly fine! What part would I need for mine or is the same one you got?

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would want to check the connection where the cable from the outside door handle connects to the lock actuator. You can see that from inside the door. It may have failed.

    These Bimmers x5 are nothing but garbage! My cousin got one with a 3.0 engine got a stalling problem until he got it replaced the engine and it still same problem.My boss at work got one with 4.4 engine and he also got lots of problem from door handle actuator to wiper shutting down etc. and it just never ends! I'd rather stick to North American cars or Japanese made cars at least I'm not paying premium on parts like these craps! A friend of mine got his Diesel x5 into a minor accident (replace right fender and from bumper cover), even the radio shut down and won't work until the dealer replace it! He got a hard time convincing the Insurance to cover and relate it to the accident.

      Haha well I wouldn't say they're garbage but owing one is not for the faint of heart. If you can't do most of the work on them yourself they are not worth owning once they're over 6 years of age IMO. You'd be better off getting a newer one and less repairs. On the other hand if you can fix them yourself you get a lot of car for the money and parts aren't too expensive so you can keep them on the road for little money. That's kind of what my channel is about. I've kept my cars going for very little money.
