      Oh yes, yes they have. I got HD3s at a discount during a memorial day sale, and I had to do the power button upgrade, the L1 and L10 mods, get a rapid fire and put a pololu power converter so they would stop complaining and leaving half my battery unused. Too many mods to get the goggle that I wanted at the price that I wanted. They could do it, but chose not to. That's why fatshark will feel some pain now, and I still love my modded HD3s.

    • @streetzfpv
      @streetzfpv 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly what they did I got say I bought the Hdos twice because by comparison their was nothing better. After I bought the Dji goggles I was kinda pissed at fatshark not comparing HD to analog but just the interface of the dji goggles, the brightness of the screen, ability to change fov. Left me wondering why Fatshark sold us the same goggles at top dollar slightly changed for years.

    • @tehllama42
      @tehllama42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Last year we were showered with clickbait videos about things being fatshark killers... none of them were. In the last 30 days, we've gotten two options which seem to make the equivalent FS product obsolete.
      For my part, the ultimate flexibility is going to be SkyzoneOLED with a Ground Station signal, or DJI system with the ability to run my legacy Analog hardware. Realistically, I'll probably run the former for racing, and my wife will run the latter for her flying.

    Reception is the top feature for me, so I guess the HDO+RapidFire combo is still the king. But Fatshark should take some notes from Skyzone: get a better menu system and SD card position (I don't mind the lack of a power button). Also, one thing that I see missing when comparing comparing prices between Skyzone and Fatshark is that you also need to count on spending some money on good antennas. This applies to both goggles.

    Absolutely love all the competition and latest advancements in our hobby! Bare in mind, the trade off between best screens vs best RF performance is actually not a trade off for some people. For example, I don't need RapidFire grade RF performance because I always fly close by and quite open areas. For me, that makes the choice even easier (although for now I'm just using the Skyzone 02x). But great points for everyone to decide for themselves.

    Does flying at 200-800mw make the whole module thing irrelevant? I believe it does. Rapidfire is awesome, but really only matters for some flying locations or for multi pilot situations. Josh can you please run a 800mW lap around to show if multipath is still an issue... a lot of us freestyle flyers don't fly with buddies.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The bottom line is that however much range you get at 800 mW on the Skyzone, you get a lot more on the RapidFire, and I don't know anybody who says, "Nah, I don't care about getting a little more range or penetration." This is especially relevant if you are in areas with lots of concrete or other obstacles.

    • @shawnzfpv
      @shawnzfpv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Is there increased range (I'm talking 'long range', not deeper into / around a bando) with the Rapidfire in Legacy diversity mode?
      Since I don't fly in a multi-path environment I'm thinking the Rapidfire goodness is lost on me trying to fly mid-range (inside 2 miles).

    • @tehllama42
      @tehllama42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshuaBardwell Excellent explanation. Running higher power just means that the point at which the module performance becomes relevant involves a lot more walking. Also the VTX performance when doing slow cruising can get dodgy, so the best apples to apples is 25mW flown close - Josh is spot on with that methodology.

    • @tehllama42
      @tehllama42 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shawnzfpv Every environment is a multipath environment. - the LNA's on goggles can get enough signal strength at the limit of range, what kills you first is that the cumulative multipath of the same signal drops your SNR way too low, so you get snow over top of an image.

    • @justindelpero
      @justindelpero 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tehllama42 I think my point was missed. If it flies the Bando at 800mw then I'm happy to use the Skyzones. The range point makes sense but not relevant to my point ;) purely a if I fly solo and midrange will the picture quality of the Skys trump the range of RF.

      No its not. I thought so too but basically it looks more immersive in reality. Man, i spent a good 3 hours watching yours and uavfutures videos on the latest goggles, was very torn between the attitude v5 and the sky02c.. didn't really want to go above 300 since i'm still fairly new. but these seem well worth a little more for oled. Haven't owned anything but box goggles so far, but both of you guys talking about how wonky the attitude v5 resolution is and how those goggles still come out to like $350ish and with racedayquads having the sky03o in stock(really not a fan of ordering through banggood), figured i'd splurge a bit to help get through this quarantine. Super excited for these to come in.

    The front camera in mine went bad in about a week, which makes me worry about other components in the goggles going bad. I'm always thinking I need to upgrade this or upgrade that, but once I got these goggles I stopped thinking I need to upgrade my goggles. My next goggle purchase will be the DJI ones, but as far as analog, my search is over.

    Will you be doing a review on the new sky02S V+ and sky03O V2?
    From what I can see they have a new sleeker design and faceplate and i would probably prefer them to the "older" ones.

      Because...service centers & spare parts on more than one continent meaning you can get your goggle reasonably quickly repaired, even old ones they stopped making years ago, like KababFPV has done.
      When I needed a new fan+foam+strap I contacted Fat Shark, they directed me to an official spare parts seller headinthecloudsrc.co.uk where I grabbed a new (black) faceplate with fan & vinyl padding, and a black headstrap for my HD2's :)

    The fatshark does a better job at resolving the thickness of that hanging cable to the right. The difference is significant. I think this has to do with the sharpening of the skyzones. There's a white halo around dark colors with the skyzones as well.

    DJI goggles are on pre-sale on Bangood under 500€.
    The only reason to use Fatshark or Skyzone is micros and any thing that will not handle DJI device weight and dimensions (50g)
    If Fathark make some hd modul under 50g to cooperate with HDO (very probably) it can be something.

    @Joshua Bardwell - No reason to try and tapdance around it - peoples faces come in different shapes, and any company that makes serious optics make models for Asian markets (but sell them worldwide), because that cut fits a lot better for people. It's enough of a thing that the different cuts get their own NSN number for DoD acquisition - so I think you'd be absolutely justified in calling out a manufacturer who ships worldwide for NOT doing a good job of this until now, and Skyzone are the first ones doing it truly right.

    Too bad it isn't just that easy, like "who's got the best image?"...
    You wear these goggles so often for so long, around your head - right on your face. There's so much more playing into it, me thinks, than just the best picture i.e. wearing comfort, handling, battery options, receiver, software, the lenses/ mirrors, availabilty of replacement parts etc. etc.
    Thanks for keeping us in the loop.^^

    Guess I'd have to see it in person. The difference from the HDO seems better, but marginally so. The RF performance is quite a bit lower than Rapidfire. In that case, HDO/Rapidfire wins, but if the image of the Skyzones is really leaps and bounds better than the HDO, I would pick Skyzone.

  • @KwongKan

    1. As an Asian, Skyzone 03O is a godsend for me, I can already see better pictures than with HD3, and able to place my eyes even closer to the displays with the bigger faceplate, now I can see whole screen with perfect sharpness. NO MORE Fatsharks for me, yay!
    2. Don't remember seeing that strong sharpening halo in my 03O, firmware issue?

    So Joshua, do you think you'll be able to objectively compare Fusion to Rapidfire, or are you planning to just stay away from it, or what's the plan? I want to upgrade from my Laforge V4 to a "merging" rather than diversity receiver, so I'm interested in how the two compare, and I'm just wondering if I should wait for you to put them through their paces. I consider you to be like the NYT of FPV. The information source of record. And I trust you to tell us if you feel an internal conflict of interest. Sorry if you've addressed this and I missed it. I've been really sick and feel disconnected a bit even though it's only been a couple of weeks that I've been "fogged in"...😉

    Just one question... Let's say I would use the Sky03O with the Docking King and the RapidFire... Would there be any disadvantage? Any latency, something like that?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only disadvantage would be having to lug it around.

    • @licensetodrive9930
      @licensetodrive9930 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shouldn't be any issues with latency using an external module. The disadvantage would be the need to power the Dock King, having to put it on a tripod or something, and have a wire running to your goggles - could be tricky if you have crash and have to go hunting for your quad using the model finder function.

    I was hoping you'd do a more traditional comparison, perhaps around your yard? Sure, the receiver isn't as good as what you can put into Fatsharks. But not all of us intentionally fly in and around massive steel structures. Just a simple floaty, hovery comparison of the image would be nice.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference in range is still noticeable. Even at 500 mW I have a little trouble flying behind my barn whereas with owlrc I don't. Using higher output power just moves the coverage contours out. It doesn't change their shape.

    The goggle industry for FPV is so weird. The best company is scared of their own shadow and their competitors refuse to beat them. Skyzone could have destroyed the HDO is one fell swoop just by releasing these Sky030's with a module bay. They did'nt even need to include their own module. DJI definitely missed the boat with no module bay too. And poor Orqa delayed by the power and fan buttons that FS is too scared to even attempt.
    Im with you on HDO's. I bought them and RapidFire last year finally going to upgrade from my Skyzone box goggles. They were very good and the RapidFire was better by far than my box goggles but the image wasn't so much better that it made me fly better. They simply didn't hit the value checkbox for me. Glad I sold them and waited, DJI's are awesome and I'll be selling my Orqa's if there is no HD module on the horizon by next spring.
