  • A short lathe project to make a Damascus steel ring.
If you try this yourself, make sure to use stainless steel as prolonged skin contact with commonly used 15N20 carbon steel can cause a nickel allergy.

Beautiful result! I’d love to see a shop tour someday. And I’d love to have a tour of the tools you use. Did I see in your bottle opener video, that you have a long piece of metal welded to a wrench?
Thanks for sharing. I’m looking forward to your future videos.

Thank you and yes you are correct about the wrench. Doing that makes twisting much easier!

@@winterbrookforge what did you use to bring the pattern back out at the end

Where can I get a ring mandrel like that?

Beautiful work! I'm confused (well, usually!) by your note; did you use the stainless instead of 15N20 when making the patterned steel, presumably with something like 1084? Thanks!

Thanks! No I did not forge this steel but rather bought it. Both the black and white steels are stainless, it’s called DSC austenit. I hope to be able to forge my own stainless Damascus one day but it is very challenging even with a power hammer or press, neither of which I have!

@@winterbrookforge Thanks for the reply! Making patterned steel from stainless is also outside my wheelhouse, and I too lack any power equipment except my right arm. Nice to know someone out there is making it; hadn't heard of DSC before.
