Blacksmithing - Forging a "Fire" Damascus belt buckle
Back in 2020, I started making this mosaic billet. The plan was and still is to make a sword pommel with it. Slow progress! I recently took a small slice of the billet to make this belt buckle with.
The billet is made from the standard 15N20, 1070 and a bit of 80CRV2 for extra contrast. The pattern is a simple 'explosion' pattern with some layers missing in the middle to give a more interesting appearance. This is an idea I got from Mick Maxen and his 'flame Damascus'.
In 2020 I hadn't built my press yet so the billet was made using the equipment at Anvil Forge (www.anvilmetalworks.co.uk) in Berkshire. Many thanks to John for allowing me to use his workshop.
Notably, I only had access to a coal hearth when making this billet and so all of the forge cladding and heat shields to protect the cladding.

Blacksmithing - Making a Damascus Steel Kiridashi
มุมมอง 48111 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I make a couple of kiridashi knives out of some patern welded steel (modern interpretation of Damascus steel). I use 1084 and 15N20 sheets to make a bar of random pattern damascus of 144 layers. With this I then make a couple of kiridashi blades using the stock removal method. Building a Hydraulic Forging Press for Blacksmithing
มุมมอง 10K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have been wanting to make a forging press for many years. I spent a long time trying to decide on the most appropriate design. I decided on the H frame design as most of the work I want to do does not require the extra space a C frame offers. The H frame is also cheaper and easier to make as strong as an equivalent rated C frame. It took 9 months to build from start to finish (not including t...
Blacksmithing - Interlocking Horseshoe Hearts
มุมมอง 189ปีที่แล้ว
A wedding gift for my cousin and her husband. Interlocking hearts are a simple and effective way of recycling old horse shoes that would otherwise have been scrapped. This video shows the whole process, step by step, from scrap shoes to meaningful gift at a slow relaxed pace. I have the upmost respect for farriers who make shoes like this in mere seconds by hand! Blacksmithing - Forging a Copper Flower
มุมมอง 2912 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I make a flower using a mix of traditional and modern tools and techniques. The stem and base are made from mild steel while the flower petals are made from copper. To see more of my work, visit my instagram page: winterbrookforge
Blacksmithing - Forging a Horse Head Keyring
มุมมอง 2.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I demonstrate how I forge a horse head keyring. The design and technique is inspired by Brian Brazeal and his excellent videos demonstrating how he forges a horse head. This is my interpretation of the design.
Forging a Herb Chopper from an Old Leaf Spring
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I forge a herb chopper from a leaf spring. I am told the spring is from an old van. Forging a herb chopper is an excellent choice of project for someone with only a forge, anvil and basic tools. The grinding required is minimal and all grinding shown could have been done with a file and sandpaper. It is fairly safe to assume that most leaf spring steel is hardenable, although, not...
Turning a Damascus steel ring
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A short lathe project to make a Damascus steel ring. If you try this yourself, make sure to use stainless steel as prolonged skin contact with commonly used 15N20 carbon steel can cause a nickel allergy. See my other work on Instagram at; winterbrookforge
Blacksmithing - Forging a twisted bottle opener
มุมมอง 50K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows how I make a bottle opener with a water twist handle. The starting stock is 10mm mild steel square bar. See more of my work on instagram at winterbrookforge
Umm you dont hapoen to sell these plans, do you?
No sorry
how many tons?

Nice job!
Few people can even imagine creating complex industrial equipment on their own, this man did a great job
Thank you! I really appreciate the compliment
2:57 noicee!!!
Good drink choice 👌 what Torch do you use to heat up specific areas?
It's an oxypropane cutting torch
Good machine
Nice job and video angles, when upsetting the end of a bar its best to make a short heat section if its heated too far or too long cool it in water to consolidate the length, much easier to control without distorsion, its all practice, a small flare or fish tail scrolled over for the handle end would have finished that off differently.
Thank you!
Zór. Bravo.😊👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇿
Nice press, but you need to work on your welding skills.
Google the man in the arena quote my guy

Ignoring the machining skills and time and effort that they put in to this project just so you could make a snide comment is childish.
Nice work, reckon I might need a Damascus tea spoon.....
What a great use for "spare" damascus! I don't happen to have any unused billets lying around, but if I did I would certainly want a buckle like this.
This video buckled my finger into smashing the like and subscribe button
Buckle Looks fantastic mate! Definitely some cool machines at that workshop, no idea what the weird swinging hammer thing was but its so medieval I love it 🤣
Cheers mate, it's a Blacker B hammer. I think it's 1942, but I'd have to check.
Nice work. But too expensive solution for only 12t.
Thank you! Cost/ benefit comes down to individual circumstances. I'm limited by my electric supply so 12t is the sweet spot of power and speed. The sturdy frame makes it squeeze more like a 16t and it does everything I need it to do. I had free access to EDM. Overall it cost me just over £2K which is much less than buying the equivalent in the UK. For me it has been worth every penny!
Thank you for explanation.@@winterbrookforge
Best one yet on YT
Super clean and strong ,best build out to date Smokes the top builders in my opinion and hell I build some myself
very well done! thanks for sharing your expertise and build with us!
Very nicely made, I assume you had access to EDM and such, because otherwise something like this would be unaffordable. Can you indicate what the output of the pump is and what pressure and motor power?
Thanks! Yes I did have access to the EDM, although I repaid the favor by forging something for them in return. The pump is 3000psi 2 stage and a 2HP motor
Que bomba você usou nesse motor de 2HP e qual medida do cylinder? Parabéns

Done, thanks! Please send a link
Beautiful work. I have been watching mostly US builds where they put 3phase 5hp 300kg monsters together but then you squish a piece of metal as good as if not better then those. Inspiring..
Thank you! I didn't have the option to throw more power at the problem, so I made a sturdy frame. This way, most of the force goes into squishing hot metal rather than stretching the frame. The results speak for themselves!
@@winterbrookforge the frame idea is something worth exploring but I imagine if metal prices are anything like they are in Australia that was probably the most expensive piece!
That's a beautiful job, a great deal of work and attention to detail has resulted in an amazing tool. Well done.
Thank you!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Não tenho ném palavras Ficou muito top Bela construção Belo projeto Gostei muito Parabéns
Thank you for your kind words!
That is absolutely beautiful!!! Great Job!
Thank you!
One of my favourite openers. Maybe a dumb question? How come you use an oxy-acetylene cutter to warm the handle and not a heating torch?
Thanks! The oxy-fuel is much hotter than the flame from a standard plumbers heating torch
I used to build up the Massey 12 ton presses & you have done a cracking job. Have you shown John?
Ah thank you! Yes John gave me advice along the way and has seen the finished press. As you can see, there are many similarities. You guys came up with a great idea!
Its a bit narrow. Not sure if an axe head would fit in there or not. I would have made the frame way wider, like double what you did.
I did consider making it wider. When I was designing it, I didn't know i'd have access to that EDM machine. The mill I had access to was the limiting factor. Also a wider press would have been more expensive. It does what I built it for and will fit most hatchets and western axes, probably not a bearded axe but I'm okay with that 😃
Outstanding craftsmanship, excellent.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Lovely, not much use to stir my tea though....
I reckon it would still work, just make sure it's not in a plastic cup 😉
awesome
nearly forgot to drop a like and smash that subscribe button God bless

The legend is back
А я на другом конце делаю волюту. Петля такая кузнечная для тех, кто не в курсе. А здесь автор просто обрезал конец после торсиона и всё... Скучно сделал.
Where can I get a ring mandrel like that?
I think it was just a cheap one off eBay
Metric??? really ... another loser!!!
Very nice work
working cold steel.
im an absolute fan of rings made of damascus steel. i know it isnt the easiest stuff to use. but i love working with it too...great job on a beautiful ring
Thank you!
Nice looking bottle opener!
Thank you!
cool keyring
Turned out beautiful. Really like your uploaded videos. Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
A beautiful job. The million dollar question is how do you fix those colors in place so it stays beautiful? Haven't found a way to keep the colors I flame into copper anything close to permanent.
It’s the first time I’ve flame coloured a copper piece like this before. I’m not really sure, I’m just experimenting. I made it a month ago now and it’s still just as colourful as it was then. It has no surface treatment, not even oil!
