There is no secret technology that this was taken from. The technique is called "electrophoresis" a technique from the 70s/80s, way way older than LCDs, and LEDs, and does not require more than a high school degree to understand. The "electrophoretic displays" mainly mastered and manufactured by the Eink Corporation, is a public company who's work and patents are as old as the 1997, a spin-off of the Massachussets Institute of Technology Media Lab, who took the electrophoretic display and put into droplets called as the Eink, to have more control over it. The manufacturing needed and the process is described in their patents in very boring details, the cost required to put into practice is very low (less than 200k$) unlike the classical displays we know, and do not require crazy technical skills. The company started pushing this technology as early as 2012, nonetheless it took 10 years for some talented designers to spot it and put into practice. However what was presented in the video is a long long effort of design and engineering and human labor to be able to put something into reality. These guys are super talented, so are the Eink Team, there is no secret sauce involved, just pure passion, perseverance and good taste.
Just another thing to go wrong, and this means more expense. I’m a strong believer in keeping it simple. Car manufacturers seem to have lost this perspective. People nowadays want all technology in their cars just like their phones. A car needs to be firstly reliable, then fun, then good looking, refined, then last of all stupid gadgets. That’s my opinion anyway
And that's exactly why they aren't releasing them to consumers. Nothing wrong with a proof of concept though. FSD will be adopted before this will and that still has a way to go. If they ever do mass produce them, it will probably be out of either of our budgets anyways. Also who says technological cars won't be reliable in the future, theyve been much better over the last decade. We're still in the technology boom of our history.

Imagine a get away car that changes color or applying this tech in a more flexible way with a suit equipped with micro cameras that change the colors to match the environment for an almost perfect near invisible camouflage.
