However, it also is mildly infered he was hustling Joey. He clearly knew more about DM than he let on. Further, he set up the match with Yugi unfairly for thier DDM match so considering rhe convenience of some of the plays in the Joey duel and HE was supplying the packs from his shop for this clear set up to get a match with Yugi..its more than likely he knew what was in them. It seems silly he would still give himself such a crappy boss but keep in mind it doesn't matter since he can also choose what Joey gets and wants to still come off as less skilled in games than he is. His plan if to lure and beat Yugi so he is playing it pretty wise in that regaurd. If he clearly is stacking or good at a game he doesn't specialize in, there is a chance Yugi won't risk his title and future on a gamble with him. He's basically king of the hustlers. We do see he has better cards in a new variant of that deck later on when he duels alongside Tristin/Serenity in the digital world and again alongside Rebecca. It isnt anything super amazing but much closer to that of "competative" players in those archs.

I always figured he and the Dungeon Dice episodes were backdoor pilots for a spinoff, but people didnt like the Dice aspect so they scrapped it, and thats why Duke Devlin looks more like an Anime Protagonist than other characters in this series. The Dice Monsters and the Capsule Monsters both were very out of place in the overall first series.
Not exactly. DDM and capsule monsters were more so done because the manga originally didn't even focus on the card game specifically. Capsule monsters was actually shown off a few times and DDM was essentially continuing that original aspect of the series even when the cards took over the story. Duke was just the major villain for his arc and even had an entirely different plot and backstory as well.
So, this was a draft duel from a set that probably came out while Joey was in duelist kingdom. So, duke would’ve had the time to learn the cards in the set, as a game store owner should, while Joey had no clue what cards he’d be drafting. In truth, this duel was in part a set up to force yugi to duel

It's sad that this three core combo still makes a monster weaker than my three card combo does. Beast King Barbaros 3000 atk can be normal summoned but atk is halfed + Axe of Fools atk is increased by 1000 but effects are negated + H - Heated Heart adds 500 atk and piercing ability. In total a 4500 atk no sacrifice monster in one turn with piercing ability because when you equip axe of fools it negates the monsters effect so the monsters attack returns to 3,000 the axe gives it an additional 1,000 atk making it 4,000 and the H heated heart gives it another 500 making it a 4500 attack monster with piercing summoned in 1 turn with no tributes, you could also switch out the H heated heart for Big bang shot which would give it 400 additional attack but being an equip spell it's a permanent 4400 attack with piercing. 😎😏

A nice fun fact of this duel, with them saying they would build their decks from freshly opened packs, every card in this duel released in Pharoh's Servant in the TCG.
Context: Joey attacked with Goblin attack force. After the attack they switched to defense mode. Devlin used a card that gave his monster the ability to deal piercing battle damage.

Tbh I only really count Kaiba because it was the only duel(s) without some kind of fuckery: -Yami used the millenium puzzle to win -Duke wasnt dueling against Joeys main deck -the rare Hunter was cheating with his xray eye -with Marik Joey was set to win but just was too drained of spiritual energy to remain standing -could also say he shouldve lost with Odion, but he did win on a technicality and Odion was using a fake copy of Ra in his deck. Damn Joey gets shafted. If he had a millenium item he probably would beat everyone 😂

There are two cards used by machine decks that, to my experience, whenever they are played the user is about to attack for game. Duke is the only time I can recall it played outside of Cyber Dragons. The other is a poly substitute that doubles the attack of the machine-type fusion monster, but at end of turn the user takes lp damage equal to it's current attack. I forget the name, but that's very specific-nvm it's Power Bond. Don't feel like erasing...
