The whole "Champions didn't exist until Trace became the Kanto Champion" thing is most certainly non-canon now, since Mustard was a Champion 50 years prior to Sword and Shield, and I doubt those games happen any later than 20 years after Red and Blue. Though I do choose to believe that Blue and Trace were the first Kanto Champions in their respective timelines.

1:20 It also just...doesn't track with what we know from Champions of other regions. It's implied that characters like Leon and Cynthia have been Champions for years so this line Samson says makes no sense in my opinion.
To be fair, Leon has been champion for ten years, which would still be well after the events of RBY. However, there's a long string of champions before him including Steel Peony and Master Mustard.
Tierno is pretty cool in Masters. Made friends with Adaman and Dahlia, pretty positive influence. Problem is they basically made him up entirely for it since XY gave us almost nothing other than "likes to dance". At the Pokémon League in Let's Go, Professor Oak outright confirms that previously, a Trainer received the Champion title just by defeating the Elite Four, but starting from Trace (and presumably also Blue), the Champion battle is implemented as part of the League challenge and the requirement to become a new Champion. So yeah, Red and Blue *are* indeed Champions in the Let's Go timeline too, they're just not staying at the League.
@pokechatter Not necessarily. Before the events of the game, just beating the Elite Four was enough to give you the title of Champion, so it was more of a title than a position, kinda like how it works in Paldea.
@@wikiuser92 In regions prior to the introduction of Paldea’s system, the champion was a position/role, and not a title, with examples of those losing, gaining, competing for or retiring from the position in gen 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8.
@@wikiuser92 The Let’s Go games are clearly set in a different universe from the RBY or FrLg, and we knew that there are already multiple universes in different game prior to Let’s Go’s release (ie SM being separate from USUM, same generation as Let’s Go). You can’t necessarily apply a newer game’s unique league system to prior games or to the rest of the currently known mainline Pokémon world. Besides, SV itself gives us evidence that other countries and their students consider the role of “champion” differently from Paldea, given that Blueberry Academy, emulating the Unovan League, treats their Champ as a role and not a title. You’re too smart to claim your headcanon applies to all universes when there is too much grey area as is in Pokemon’s World Building.
Here’s a new head-canon that I came up with for anyone who finds my comment to enjoy. When Gladion canonically travelled around Kanto for a month after the events of the Alola main story (provided the extra battle is USUM exclusive), he came across Silver during his journey and the two of them started out hating each other but eventually started realizing they had several pieces of common ground and became best friends afterwards.
1:23 Actually, they do mention that in Let's Go. Trace says on the S.S. Anne "Blue's real strong. I heard he beat the Pokémon League's Elite Four years ago. And I heard he's got a rival who even managed to beat him, too!"
My favorite rivals are Cheren, Bianca and Nemona. Having friends as rivals is cool and they aren't jerks like how some people want their rivals to be. P.S. Did not know that's why Barry fines people. Thought it was just an odd quirk of his
Gary's voice actor did change at the end of Ultimate Journeys, and the beginning of Ash's final adventure, since his voice actor, James Carter Cathcart, got lung cancer and was unable to voice Gary, Professor Oak, James, Meowth, and a bunch of other Pokemon throughout the rest of Ash's final adventure
If you want to talk about crazy odds with Wally, the Zigzagoon he borrows isn't shiny locked either. I wonder what the odds are of both Ralts and Zigzagoon being shiny in the same battle
Wally has always been my favourite rival, even before when they gave him a character in oras (because i like ralts). Him going from an insecure little guy to actually being confident about fighting you in victory road makes me love him even more
It was implied by Agatha (I’m not sure which continuity) that Samuel was a champion at 1 point. Also in a, debatable canon, manga prequel to the anime, it was said that Samuel’s grandfather, Palet Oak, was a champion and the founder of Palet town.
Always rep Blue because as a kid I didn't realize that anything, but my Charizard probably would have been helpful against him. In more modern sensibilities, it's a tossup between Arven and Nemona, I lost my mom in January 2022 and Scarlet was the game out of the pair I chose to play first, so I got the dreaded feeling of realization that a parent was gone, and unironically being the friend in that game to help him out and find some form of peace was neat cause my friends were rock solid for me too throughout it. Also, Mabosstif and my dog aren't too far apart either in their ups and downs, though she wasn't attacked by a prehistoric god lizard, so there's that too. Wait, am I just Arven? Nemona in the other hand is really simple, I love the concept of Pokemon Goku. Always looking for a new challenge and finding someone who clicks with you and gets that desire to push forward, that's just a vibe.
Sorry about your mom. I had to warn a friend of mine whose father died when she was a teenager and who has a very strained relationship with her mother that there's a very uncomfortable family relationship in this game with no happy ending. I tried not to spoil but I hope it prepared her for the ending (she's been busy and hasn't played much) If you like the idea of "Pokémon Goku", might I suggest reading Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!, an 8 volume manga by Shigekatsu Ihara? The main character, Hareta, is a Lucas expy who grew up in the woods and regularly takes on pokémon directly.
4:44 Actually, Barry only has a 20 level jump after beating the Hall of Fame 20 times in Diamond and Pearl. Nothing happens after beating it 10 times in both games, Platinum just has an unused set of teams that are 10 levels higher.
I’ve got one for Trace, he’s the only rival who loses moves between his battles, losing a move on every Pokémon when he’s the champion compared to his prior fight.
I always thought that had they not done Journeys and did a standard Galar anime, that Hop and Marnie would’ve been cool traveling companions for Ash. Mainly since it’d be a neat curveball and by way of me imagining Ash deciding to mentor Hop after winning the Alola League. It’d be cool if we had a jerk rival who’d transition into being more friendly over the course of the game by way of you giving them an actual challenge.
Type:Null is classed as a legendary for the exact same reason Mewtwo was classed as a legendary, despite both having at least 2-3 additional cannon instances (Mewtwo developed by both Team Rocket and Team Plasma/Neo Team Plasma while Type:Null was developed by the Ather Foundation and later a rough scientist) both where created based on pre-existing mythical pokemon utilizing said DNA and Data on the pokemon (a fossilized eyelash from mew and the elemental plates of arceus) thats why despite being on the weaker/more common side, Type:Null is a legendary.
Player character ages are really interesting thing in my opinion. Especially nowadays with how often we get context clues about other character ages. As for the Scarlet and Violet player characters specifically, I think we can infer a few things about their age. We know that they are younger than Arven and Nemona. The former is in class 2H which would imply that he is in the grade above the player character and the latter mentions being at the school the year before. We can also assume by that logic that Penny is potentially older than the player character as well for the same reason. There is also the fact that the player transfers into the class and happens to be in the same class that Nemona is in. So instead of talking about the likelihood that the champion herself was held back a year, let's focus on the fact that our player might have had previous schooling. So this means they wouldn't be the age of someone just starting out. What isn't helping us is the fact that the school is open to all ages. If the Academy was functionally a high school, then we would have a bit more information to work with. But considering there are people who are clearly in their 60s or older who are addressed as falling under the student trainer class And the one guy outside the water gym town who has been at the school for 20 years but only has two level 20 Pokémon? I'm kind of at a loss. Through design alone I would say the player characters are no younger than 12. But given the apparent ages of Arven and Nemona (they could easily be 16) then the protagonist would have to be older. All of this waffling to essentially conclude that in my opinion the only age that makes sense for the player is 14 or 15. In other words, they would've transferred partway into their freshman year, with Nemona lacking the credits to become a sophomore.
On a technicality, I would also say Byron sort of changed his because he was Oreburgh's gym leader until very recently and, similar to Jasmine, his Onix became a Steelix.
The 87 cap on Nemona and Kieran bothers me cause I just keep remembering Red's level 88 Pikachu and how nobody has gone above that yet. BDSP Cynthia matched it but 88 is still the cap.
I think we’ve all collectively named Silver ‘butt’ At one stage of our lives- but that doesn’t absolve him from being my favourite rival. His arc is really fun, but being the son of Giovanni is vastly underplayed. Kieran managed to scratch that familiar itch I’ve really wanted in a rival, though, so he’s a real close second :))
Nemona’s slowly becoming one of my favorite rivals, especially since me and her ended up with half the same team. Somehow, we both had a Pawmot, Goodra, and a Starter (just pretend she also had Meowscarada), so it always felt like we were trying to one up each other
I have a few fun facts of my own for the later rivals Hop's name and hair are based on the hop plant which is also known as the prince plant because it resembles a prince's crown. This draws a parallel with Leon's name and hat being king references Bede's character growth is shown in his League cards with the first one having a crude hasty signature while the second has a more refined one, symbolizing how he started caring more about his career Marnie's personality is the polar opposite of her signature mon as her mood can take days to change while Morpeko's changes constantly Klara actually used to be a very hard worker but grew frustrated and disheartened after not managing to make any advancements on her Idol career. She was inspired to become a gym leader by Pier's popularity and chose the Poison type because it had the least competition for the position Penny's habit of calling her eeveelitions "Veevees" it's a reference to SwSh where you can occasionally hear Eevee Kids using the term Kieran will offer to trade an Applin with the player if you talk to him 3 times at the club room on the epilogue of the indigo disc dlc. With the player originally being from Gallar this implies Kieran has developed romantic feelings for them
I honestly forget the gen 6 "rivals" even exist, that just goes to show how little they effect the plot as those 3 are only ever fought twice. And if im being honest it feels like if you removed Tierno, Trevor and Shauna from X & Y...nothing would really change
Nice video! My favorite rival has got to be Silver bc I like his character design and I really like the Celebi event. I do wish they did more with him being Giovanni's son though.
If were talking just games then I'd probably pick N as my favorite rivial. If were taking the anime into account its Paul. Also, you're either a fan of King of the Hill or its laundry day and that shirt was all you had for this video.
I'm amazed that PMEX had the audacity to reference the shiny chance of Wally's Ralts encounter in his sygna suit unit. And I guess he should get Iron Valiant next for the full set.
Hoenn rivals are much more closer together than any other pair. They seem to face a lot more threats together, their final epilogue battle comes after an extremely heartfelt and emotional moment and it even seems their parents are friends as I seem to remember their parents having dinner and discussing that they are watching the meteor showers together.
My personal favorite rival has got to be Hugh. His Qwilfish Hair is stylish (no kidding) His theme is kind of a banger His story is one of the most unique out of all characters His team is also decent.
The bit from Let's Go about there not being Champions until now also contradicts Sword & Shield where... no, Champions have absolutely been a thing for a LONG-ass time; Minimum 50 years, since that's how long ago Mustard first became Champion, after defeating Opal (overcoming a Type Disadvantage in the process, go Mustard!) Also it's worth noting about Kieran, that if you bring out Ogerpon, he is programmed to focus on it EXCLUSIVELY so long as it remains on the field, completely ignoring your other Pokemon.
Great video My favorite rival is Silver I played Pokémon Crystal then Leaf Green so when we got the Giovanni's son has red hair line I was blown away when making the connection I had yet to read the Adventures manga that far yet either
thanks for including Wally from Gen 3 under friendly rival, people like to say new games are bad because of friendly rivals when we are literally getting friendly rivals since Gen 3 yes new games are bad but not because of friendly rivals
I love all the rivals in Pokemon but my favorite is Kieran...I really love Nemona Arven and Penny too...and also Barry Hugh Bede Wally and Hop they are all goats
Fun fact: in platinum the rival character (Dawn) is the daughter of a scientist that works for Professor Rowan. And Ofc she is the assistant, but you don’t need to ask any optional characters for that. Meanwhile, you can all to Dawn’s father.
I have bonus fact about Kieran. He gonna say this dialogue about Ogerpon only to Ogerpon. Zoroark will not count so we can see how big bond he has to Ogerpon. (Or it can be just Codes in game but I like see this as Headcanon
Also I still do not give Nemona props for being a league Champion. Paldea IMO watered the titled down. In some ways its cool that there's more than one but in others the realism of who you face really hits home. Geeta's line up sucks so bad. Heck even Nemona's line sucks. There's the implication that her previous journey lead to the idea that she had a much much better team and yet you somehow felt unworthy despite slapping her every confrontation I dunno....Champions of Paldea my as well be Orange Island Contest Champions or Battle Frontier Brains. Yes they are strong but it feels less grandiose than any prior championship outside of maybe Alola
they say Arven isn't a rival, I see him as more of friend and he did remind me train my team up pretty good as he beat me how many times and I love how he holds his Pokeball upside down, like Arven dear you have your pokeball upside down, lol also did you realize we can no longer name our rival like back in the day..i wonder why,lol
One more fun fact about the galar rivals in masters they all own a legendary bird this is most likely a homage to the manga where the three of them encountered the birds but interesting enough marnie and hops had the opposite encounter hops tried to get moltras and marnie tried to get zapados
yeah Penny and Arven aren’t actually rivals but just consider it bonus content, you’re welcome
Eh... I'd say that they count.
One of Arven’s theme skills in Masters EX is Rival.
Arven IS a rival according to Pokémon Masters Ex.

So yeah, Red and Blue *are* indeed Champions in the Let's Go timeline too, they're just not staying at the League.
Blue and Red might have abdicated their champ titles too
@pokechatter Not necessarily.
@@pokechatter Exactly. But in-universe, that was not true before the events of the Gen 1 games and their remakes.
6:28 wait what? No he doesn’t. He specifically says he hatched his starter from an egg
Wally and Kieran, without a doupt.
Penny also mentions Peony's catchphrase when she's in a phone call
No it was still him those were recorded before he retired
@@madnessarcade7447 I don't think so. The voices are completely different, Meowth doesn't even have the accent anymore
Honestly, learning those facts about Cheren and Bianca made me appreciate them as characters even more than I already did
Favorite rivals:
Blue
Wally
Barry
Hugh
Hop
Nemona
Also amazing video! 👍🤩
Him going from an insecure little guy to actually being confident about fighting you in victory road makes me love him even more
I think you forgot Avery
I tried not to spoil but I hope it prepared her for the ending (she's been busy and hasn't played much)
If you like the idea of "Pokémon Goku", might I suggest reading Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!, an 8 volume manga by Shigekatsu Ihara?
@@misterzygarde6431 Kinda sounds like Gladion
Say what you want about scarlet and Violet. Gotta admit, story and characters they got down really well I think
Avery actually uses a Galarian Slowking as his ace in the Galarian Star Tournament.
I like Hau way more than I should. He is adorable and happy and has fun in the sun of Hawa-- alola. Who wouldn't want to hang out with him?
N is a rival in my heart!!!
9:50 Sends suspiciously Trans coded beam at your rival forever changing the course of their life.
Which only shows that being a tran is a choice 😊
Somehow, we both had a Pawmot, Goodra, and a Starter (just pretend she also had Meowscarada), so it always felt like we were trying to one up each other
That wasn’t tierno? There’s more than just one fat guy in Pokemon.
Tierno is so forgettable, bro had to create a fact for him on his own😭
The director of the movie confirmed it was Tierno in an interview later on.
@@JPRPokeTrainer98 that doesn’t sound right, when was this? How come nobody else mentioned it before?
@@JPRPokeTrainer98 and also that Verity's mother ISN'T Cynthia

Especially great in the anime
I have a few fun facts of my own for the later rivals
Hop's name and hair are based on the hop plant which is also known as the prince plant because it resembles a prince's crown. This draws a parallel with Leon's name and hat being king references
Bede's character growth is shown in his League cards with the first one having a crude hasty signature while the second has a more refined one, symbolizing how he started caring more about his career
Marnie's personality is the polar opposite of her signature mon as her mood can take days to change while Morpeko's changes constantly
Klara actually used to be a very hard worker but grew frustrated and disheartened after not managing to make any advancements on her Idol career. She was inspired to become a gym leader by Pier's popularity and chose the Poison type because it had the least competition for the position
Penny's habit of calling her eeveelitions "Veevees" it's a reference to SwSh where you can occasionally hear Eevee Kids using the term
Kieran will offer to trade an Applin with the player if you talk to him 3 times at the club room on the epilogue of the indigo disc dlc. With the player originally being from Gallar this implies Kieran has developed romantic feelings for them
Hopefully in the next one we get the intro you have one of the best music intros brings me so much nostalgia love you jpr 💪🏿🔥keep doing it
Fun fact Brendan will think Norman child is an boy if you pick May
9:52 I'm really glad you pointed this out because I have shield and I looked for her everywhere not knowing she was version exclusive🤣
Great King Of The Hill shirt
Wally is my favorite rival in Pokemon. 😊
I honestly forget the gen 6 "rivals" even exist, that just goes to show how little they effect the plot as those 3 are only ever fought twice. And if im being honest it feels like if you removed Tierno, Trevor and Shauna from X & Y...nothing would really change
We'll see if any rivals to come take on some traits of both the jerk & friendly rivals
Wally is a champ. You can't help but to root for Hop, Marnie is an angel and Bede is a prick.
Nemona. Nuff said.
The Hoenn Rivals? ...Are you sure?
@TwoHeadedMeerkat I mean the protagonist and the rival. I think the stupid is starting to take over me
I'm pretty sure Blue mentions he was a champion until Red came along in LGPE
Leaving work at 5pm on a Friday hearing "good morning everyone goooooood morning"!
11:27 I believe the theory that since gen 5, the protagonist is 15, and all rivals since are the same age or a little younger.
The player is 14 in BW and 11 in SM. I believe that is all we know.
JPR your Nascar tapestry is dope ! Where did you get it ?
My personal favorite rival has got to be Hugh.
His Qwilfish Hair is stylish (no kidding)
His theme is kind of a banger
His story is one of the most unique out of all characters
His team is also decent.
U have to be younger than 14
@FMJUploads biff, I'm 18. Lmao
@MananKandhari so 13 when swsh came out. So you preferring hop over all of them sounds about right
@@FMJUploads they said hugh lol not hop
@@FMJUploads Hop, I'm talking BW2 bud. And Hop has a character. At least he scotches it better than whatever you are yapping about lmao.
The bit from Let's Go about there not being Champions until now also contradicts Sword & Shield where... no, Champions have absolutely been a thing for a LONG-ass time; Minimum 50 years, since that's how long ago Mustard first became Champion, after defeating Opal (overcoming a Type Disadvantage in the process, go Mustard!)
Also it's worth noting about Kieran, that if you bring out Ogerpon, he is programmed to focus on it EXCLUSIVELY so long as it remains on the field, completely ignoring your other Pokemon.
Great video
My favorite rival is Silver
I played Pokémon Crystal then Leaf Green so when we got the Giovanni's son has red hair line I was blown away when making the connection
I had yet to read the Adventures manga that far yet either
thanks for including Wally from Gen 3 under friendly rival, people like to say new games are bad because of friendly rivals when we are literally getting friendly rivals since Gen 3
yes new games are bad but not because of friendly rivals
Heck we had a friendly rival in gen ONE. Blue is a jerk but he's a jerk in the way that eleven year old best friends are to each other
@BJGvideos it can even be interpreted as a crush as 11 year-olds often bully their crushes.
And because of their honeymoon in Alola.
@@NV_Penta Hahaha true. Though a lot of it is just normal tween behavior. Eleven year olds tend to be dickwads.
Think the issue is that's ALL we get now, some variation and grey rivals etc would be nice
@ThatGuyAgen Bede was just LAST GEN to say nothing of Avery and Klara
The amount of disrespect for LGPE is astounding 😂
7:08 well all 3 of Tierno’s pokemons have a move related to dance like Sword Dance and Petal Dance.

@ tbh, it’s because I forgot his name at the moment of commenting.
Can't wait for Trace to appear in Pokémon Masters and call himself Kanto’s first Champion. That would be hilarious.
JPR was wrong, it is confirmed in Let's Go that both Blue and Red beat the Elite Four previously.
I have bonus fact about Kieran. He gonna say this dialogue about Ogerpon only to Ogerpon. Zoroark will not count so we can see how big bond he has to Ogerpon. (Or it can be just Codes in game but I like see this as Headcanon
@@Cargo_The_Hedgehog he's an obsessed fanbrat with nothing else in his life so of course he recognizes her
Also I still do not give Nemona props for being a league Champion. Paldea IMO watered the titled down.
In some ways its cool that there's more than one but in others the realism of who you face really hits home. Geeta's line up sucks so bad. Heck even Nemona's line sucks. There's the implication that her previous journey lead to the idea that she had a much much better team and yet you somehow felt unworthy despite slapping her every confrontation
I dunno....Champions of Paldea my as well be Orange Island Contest Champions or Battle Frontier Brains. Yes they are strong but it feels less grandiose than any prior championship outside of maybe Alola
