It's 2020 now and I have an e-golf that I absolutely love and I'm seriously considering picking up one of these hybrid Jettas as a second car for long commutes! Thanks for the great video!
I completely agree. VW says the new 1.4L Turbo engine in the Jetta Hybrid puts our 150 HP while the electric motor is rated at 27 HP for a combined 150 HP. That already seems odd to me. What happened to extra 7 HP?
Very nice review. It seems like this Jetta has it all, sportiness, comfort, fuel efficiency, practicality, refinement, and most importantly, european luxury. I think that factor will make the best in class. The next best buy for hybrid in terms of luxury I would say is probably the 2013 ford fusion hybrid which is not even in the same class. Just goes to shows how competent the Jetta is. Proud of VW once again.
Great review Roman. I did some price comparisons on the web and the Jetta is one of the least expensive on the market. I'm thoroughly impressed with it. It's time to go test drive one and get my final impressions.
Thanks for your excellent and professional reviews!! Your insights are much appreciated. Keep them coming so I can keep shopping for new cars...in my mind.
that engine is EA111 1.4TSI which is a bi turbo (supercharger + turbo charger) there is two variations of that engine : 160hp @ 5800RPM and 240 Nm @ 1500RPM in the big cars (golf , jetta ...) , 180hp @ 6200RPM and 250 Nm @ 2000RPM in the polo GTI the engine is rated and calibrated differently to match the requirments of european emissions laws (they pay tax for every class of emissions) so the engine make 160hp @5800RPM and if you get to 6200RPM it will make 180 hp
Hey guys greetings from the UK! Found your videos by accidents and have to say. Interesting videos, cool cars and a good amount of fun in there! Awesome and please keep the cars and videos coming!
Who knows how reliable it will be. And that's a huge factor in buying one of these cars. The Prius does not compete with the Jetta as you said one because they are in different classes and two the Prius gets better MPG and insanely high reliability scores. It would be nice to see how the Jetta hybrid turns out against the civic hybrid. Good video
In your opinion though, is it really giving more value and fuel mileage for the price over getting a Jetta with a TDi? Being a fan of VW's diesel motor for a while now, as it has great fuel efficiency on extremely long drives, has always been a key decision when I look at VW.
Impressive performance for being over 7000 feet. Having both a turbo and an electric motor do well to mitigate the lack of oxygen density. BTW, Andre the mechanic is easier to understand than Baron von Farfignuegen.
Keep in mind that with this Jetta it has the newer 1.4 TSI (which can also be found in the new mk7 golf and (i think) the new Audi A3) that only has a turbo unlike the Polo GTI that has a turbo and supercharger. Although you could probably still get 180hp and 250nm from the 1.4 TSI in the jetta by tuning.
So how do you drive a dual clutch? I have one of these cars, just bought it used (in great shape), but I have no idea how to drive it if I drop that transmission into the special mode, whatever that's called, and nobody seems to give a damn about showing how to drive the dual clutch. I know how to drive it like an automatic, but that's not the only way to drive this car.
Ya, specially when you see other new jetta models are having lot of problems, I don't know if I would buy this anytime soon, I have to wait to see the reliablity.
I'd be curious to see the difference in the 0-60 between what you saw in Santa Fe and somewhere near sea level. My suspicion is that the combination of the turbo and the electric motor negates a lot of the altitude effect, so VW's 8.6 s number may not be too far off. Still a very good number at over a mile up, though.
Turbos usually fail, and are an expensive fix, but props to VW for not utilizing a CVT, and using a dual clutch 7 speed! I'm a Honda guy, but I'd NEVER consider one of their Hybrids.
Another great review Roman. Not to sure about Hybrid Jetta at that price 32k with all the bells and whistles? I'd rather get the TDI Jetta and spend the rest on new wheels and a weekend getaway with the girlfriend. By the way does it take regular unleaded?
actually, the reason why combined you only get 170hp is because the hybrid motor and the electric motor dont produce max power at the same rpm. But vw is, no doubt, underrating all their engines
BenTheRandomGuy This is true. I tested this car on a dyno while I was developing SAE J2908. Also, the transmission has a max torque rating matched to the engine, not motor+engine so it’s de-rated in torque capability.
Roman, what song/ instrumental is that in the video?anyway I just cant get into Jettas...they are just kind of plain looking it doesn't make me feel anything when looking at it. and they can be pricey. Not bad 0-60 for a hybrid though.
Interesting how they take a Euro power plant (1.4 TSI / 7 spd DSG) and throw in an electric motor to make it more powerful for the US market. If it wasn't on an EPA-friendly cycle, I think this power plant could easily net 55 MPG at least.
Only in the states im sure, diesel motors for vw are pretty common especially in europe. and vw diesels are popular great here too especially the older diesel motors.
Volkeswagen and Hybrid should never be in the same sentence. That is one company that I never saw moving to a Hybrid. In my mind, VW is one in the same with diesel engines. If you want a Hybrid go to Toyota.
So, if the jetta tdi gets 42mpg and the jetta hybrid gets 45mpg with a gas engine why doesnt vw make a tdi hybrid. From the looks of it that car should get 60 mpg maybe more. Hint hint vw
roman that jetta is faster than a golf GTI , the TSI 1.4 make 180 hp and 250 nm of torque in the polo GTI , because they dont wanna make thegolf GTI look stupide they announced just 150hp from that engine (VW AG is underrating his products S8 made 590hp when motor trend tested it they announced just 520hp)
Hmmm....how about a 7 speed DSG diesel I'm sure that would beat out this and u wouldn't worry about the unknown EMF hazards from the battery in the back plus more space in the back. If you added the technology from the chevy cruze eco where part of the front grill closes on the highway for aerodynamics. Bam, there you go 50+ MPG
Altitude wouldn't affect the electric motor which creates the majority of the off-the-line torque. I'm sure VW wouldn't underestimate the 0-60 time that much...
Exactly my thinking, if i ever see another brand of passenger car at a diesel pump i look like O.o lol If there were more accesable diesel filling places around me i'd totally get a Jetta TDI or the Cruze Diesel thats coming soon.
Altitude makes no difference in a turbocharged car. A turbo creates atmospheric pressure and will create the power regardless of you driving next to the beach or in the rocky mountains.
Maybe they want to help the environment a tad or recieve a mpg tax credit. Maybe they just don't want to visit the gas pump as much. All logical reasons.
this is all fine and good but it is still a vw. to me vw's are unreliable. i had constant problems with mine and my sister did too. just cant see myself ever getting another vw. although i would love a small diesel car. my silverado get 13 mpg...ouch
this car might win with regular toyota prius but if compare with prius plug in..then its failiar...there is only five thousand difference between this basse model jetta to base model prius plug in..guys think about fuel and electric charging 2 in one..jetta is too late now
I think you should use some books to find those 7 HP... and I hope you aren't an engineer, because as I listen to your "reviews", your knowledge ends on the producer's spec brosure...it's so embarrassing...
Thanks for the kind comments. We're very lucky to have great viewers like you Stefano!
It's 2020 now and I have an e-golf that I absolutely love and I'm seriously considering picking up one of these hybrid Jettas as a second car for long commutes! Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching in the U.K.
Volkswagen proves that hybrids don't have to look like space age cars. Thanks VW.

The number of powertrain options available for the Jetta is amazing. VW is way ahead of the competition in the American market in this respect.
I bought this last weekend! I love it!
Wow I'm really impressed, I love it, since the 0-60 time to the styling, fuel economy... and a buy it recommendation.... yep... maybe my new car!
Great review Roman. I did some price comparisons on the web and the Jetta is one of the least expensive on the market. I'm thoroughly impressed with it. It's time to go test drive one and get my final impressions.

I have a 2016 Jetta Hybrid...I love it.

160hp @ 5800RPM and 240 Nm @ 1500RPM in the big cars (golf , jetta ...) ,

so the engine make 160hp @5800RPM and if you get to 6200RPM it will make 180 hp
Exactly, neither do turbocharged engines, that's why the performance is just as good at altitude.
Gotta give credit where it's due. Awesome review!

Giving hope for hybrids.
im picking mine up this monday, cant wait...
That the same 0-60 time than my B7 A4 1.8T! Impressive!
Roman, how can you say the Jetta Hybrid has no competition in that style? What about the Ford Fusion Hybrid? Camry Hybrid? Etc
VW should market more of those smaller TSI engines in the US. Over here we get them as 1.2 (86 and 105 hp) and 1.4 (122, 140, 150, 160, 180 hp).
I ran across your channel and i love your reviews.
You guys didn't answer the big question of the day. Does the hybrid have better gas mileage than the diesel.
In your opinion though, is it really giving more value and fuel mileage for the price over getting a Jetta with a TDi? Being a fan of VW's diesel motor for a while now, as it has great fuel efficiency on extremely long drives, has always been a key decision when I look at VW.

Best hybrid by far. I would still like the TDI or GLI but this is very cool as well

Just curious how the transition between electric motor and gasoline engine is. Any thought on that?
Turbos usually fail, and are an expensive fix, but props to VW for not utilizing a CVT, and using a dual clutch 7 speed! I'm a Honda guy, but I'd NEVER consider one of their Hybrids.

That's a great news, because That's the model I'm intresrted the most.
Only in the states im sure, diesel motors for vw are pretty common especially in europe. and vw diesels are popular great here too especially the older diesel motors.
Did they say that was because of the altitude? Doesn't it have to do with the air density in the engine and the compression of the gasoline?
Hey Roman could you review a 2013 VW CC if you could get your hands on one? Thanks a lot and great videos.
I follow a few forums, the gli doesn't seem to have to many issues.
I wonder how these have held up in 2024
Volkeswagen and Hybrid should never be in the same sentence. That is one company that I never saw moving to a Hybrid. In my mind, VW is one in the same with diesel engines. If you want a Hybrid go to Toyota.
I am going to buy it.
Does the 2013 VW Jetta Hybrid have paddle shifters?
Awesome!!!
The civic hybrid is a mild hybrid and inly get one less mpg combined...if it were a full hybrid it would get well over 50mpg
So, if the jetta tdi gets 42mpg and the jetta hybrid gets 45mpg with a gas engine why doesnt vw make a tdi hybrid. From the looks of it that car should get 60 mpg maybe more. Hint hint vw

Dude! It’s turbocharged. It doesn’t matter that you are above sea level. It boosts to same absolute manifold pressure. You a car guy or not?
Your not
Nice video
hybrid? vw?
i want this jetta so bad, i guess i going to star saving my pennies i have an 09 already but hybrid is the next thing
Exactly my thinking, if i ever see another brand of passenger car at a diesel pump i look like O.o lol If there were more accesable diesel filling places around me i'd totally get a Jetta TDI or the Cruze Diesel thats coming soon.
the turbo dont care much about altitude because he boost the same psi with more rmp
Wrong!
Two things. First will it come in manual? Second. I wish they would just bring the polo over. It may be diesel but it gets 70mpgs!
Altitude makes no difference in a turbocharged car. A turbo creates atmospheric pressure and will create the power regardless of you driving next to the beach or in the rocky mountains.
the electric motor won't be affected by high altitude, that's why there isn't much difference.
Pls do the new santa fe,Roman
and nathan?
Roman i want to race you in my Nissan Leaf! HAHAHA
1.4 TSI develope a stuning 180 hp and 250 torque
@Yannick de Vries 45 combined is good
Coming soon the Diesel Hybrid 6th engine... Over $30,000
VW jetta models: S, SE, SEL, TDI, and GLI.
thanks the best
What took VW so long...I thoguht by Prius standard the car gotta be taco shaped to get 45 MPG.
Good review, but I don't like the car..
Maybe they want to help the environment a tad or recieve a mpg tax credit. Maybe they just don't want to visit the gas pump as much. All logical reasons.
7 speed gearbox? Why the hell are other automakers using crap CVT's
this is all fine and good but it is still a vw. to me vw's are unreliable. i had constant problems with mine and my sister did too. just cant see myself ever getting another vw. although i would love a small diesel car. my silverado get 13 mpg...ouch
me gusta
this car might win with regular toyota prius but if compare with prius plug in..then its failiar...there is only five thousand difference between this basse model jetta to base model prius plug in..guys think about fuel and electric charging 2 in one..jetta is too late now
WTF happened to the sound?
Rather get a diesel, more mpg!
WOW that German guy sounds so not normal...
yeah shit
I think you should use some books to find those 7 HP... and I hope you aren't an engineer, because as I listen to your "reviews", your knowledge ends on the producer's spec brosure...it's so embarrassing...
Electrict motors doesnt care on what altitute they are...
still no love for my insight...
45 mpg wow that's not amazing how about 100 mpg I kno they have the technology to do it
That is a gay German if i have ever seen one. Good video though.
first
Rather ride a bike then buy an atrocious toyota... matter of fact they'd have to pay me to drive one.
