  • With a global pandemic ripping through the world, there are some really amazing deals to be had when it comes to safaris in the Serengeti.
On top of that, the park is almost empty. This means that there are no lines to drive by and see the paw of a lion.
We decided to splurge a bit and stay at one of the top tented camps in the entire park: Asilia Namiri Plains. We can not recommend this place enough. The staff was incredible and did all of the little things so well.
I did not mention to them at all that our final day there was my birthday...but they were smart enough to notice it on our passports. So for breakfast on our final day, they brought me a cake and sang pretty much the most incredible song ever.
The park is situated in a little pocket that has no permanent roads and was the big cat research area for 30 years. We saw cats (like the Serval) that I had not only had never seen before but had never heard of.
I saw more cats on this trip than every other safari I had been on combined. Take advantage of no one being in the park and the incredible rates that are available.
Oh, and we saw a cheetah hunt and kill a Thomson's gazelle. So eat your heart out Discovery Channel.

What are the rules for offroad driving in the Serengeti? I see vehicles off the road in lots of TH-cam videos, but I thought this was not allowed. Can you get a special permit or do the guides just drive offroad?

I feel it comes down to the guides discretion. Also, roads in the Serengeti are sometimes noon existent.

@@evanlorendo Thanks Evan. I'm currently considering a visit to the serengeti around June this year. Will be filming for youtube and not getting paid, so technically can get by without a film permit. But I do have a lot of professional gear, so permit might save me some hassle. Trying to figure out if I need the film permit for other reasons like offroad driving, driving at night, flying a drone.

@@MovingPicturesAfrica As I would tell anyone, there are for sure Tanzanian laws that have to be followed. That said, use your own lattitude for what you think is right. I know that there is a big focus on drones in the park, so your driver may stop you from letting that go. However, there are only so many resources for enforcement that you will have to use your own judgement.
