After years of being self taught and learning theory in a very disorganized manner, this video really wrapped everything together for me. It was like having all the right puzzle pieces & then finally finding the order they go in. thank you for the video! :)
Look I have played off and on for 20 some years and this still confuses me man. I play what sounds go together. I get so confused pver a this . But I know if I actually knew what cords went with what I would be better all around.
I've been jamming on guitar for 35 years and always put off learning theory because every time someone started to explain it I felt like I was hearing a foreign language. Thanks for giving me a complete understanding in English.
I have to say, I’m over 50 and just started playing the guitar. I’ve learned SO much by watching your videos. Thank you for doing what you do. I had become a bit discouraged trying to learn the instrument (even with personal lessons), but your videos have helped me tremendously. Again-THANK YOU!
I’m the same . I started not knowing a thing about music but I have the desire to play guitar. I’m determined and practice 2hrs a day. I’m not musically gifted but I’m hard headed and love to practice . I love the grind, after about a year and a half I’m starting to get kind compliments on my playing from people. What a compliment. I just love to play and always try to learn something new. I may not learn it all perfectly but I’m a little bit better if I get just attain more knowledge. The key is to practice, try to always learn and remember to have fun.
So I play for 57 years. 10 yrs school lessons, 2 yrs college lessons Theory. At 50 I am diagnosed with a learning disorder. I am building my own channel to drag myself kicking and screaming with a smile and a tear through music theory in front of the world. Today, ...you helped. I will like, suscribe and stay in touch, not plagiarize you or any other of the diverse sources and methods I must employ to drive the theory home to pragmatic daily use in composition and performance. Sincerely, Thanks. I am 68 and grateful.
Hi , I learnt the guitar when I was 6 yrs after being inspired by my dad who was a guitarist. At that age, learning all this theory made me overwhelmed that I begun to hate it and I quit holding a six string in my life again. My dad passed away in 2016, I took his guitar which was beginning to rust and decided to play instead. I didn't go for classes this time, instead my brother taught me a few chords. Over 6 years of playing I felt a need of learning some basics, which you did. My guitar teacher told me these things when I was 6 years old, which made less sense to me then. But today, your video is ringing bells in my head. With more clarity and understanding, I'm in a pursuit to get a stronghold with theory as well as playing. Thank you very much:)
ON GUITAR, 1-3-5 is for major. 1-2-5 is a chord named Sus2 (Sus meaning suspended) and 1-4-5 is a chord named Sus4. 1-3b(flat 3)-5 is minor, the 3rd is a semitone lower. Diminished is 1-3b-5b. Minor 7th is 1-3b-5-7b and Major 7th is 1-3-5-7. I hope this helps. And to be cleared this is based off the Major scale (W-W-H-W-W-W-H) and the Minor scale (W-H-W-W-H-W-W).
I am a logical thinker and he is the only person who has made a logical explanation of music theory that has made it simple to understand. I am not a person that is musically gifted with the ability to hear notes for note etc but now I have a basic understanding of music theory and I can build on this understanding of the basics. Fantastic work and so well explained. I am a teacher in electrical theory and it just clicked with me as he has summarized and kept it so simple. Once again well done. Thanks Rosco
After a year of struggling with guitar theory I really got a video that made me understand things I did not find so clearly explained all over TH-cam, thanks so much for this, indeed you are the best teacher :)
Really excellent explanation of basic music theory. When I was a kid, 10 thru 17 years old, I played Trombone in school band. We learned how to read music (in my case bass clef), and how to play the notes were located on our instruments; but I don’t recall learning any music theory. Years later, I became more interested in theory, as I’ve also played guitar since I was 10. You steps 1 thru 7 make perfect sense to me, but step 8 (majors and minors) is where I start to get lost. Thanks for you video tutorial. I’ll definitely be checking out more of your stuff.

I know this video has been up for years. I’ve gone through so many intro to music theory videos and books and none of it was put together in such a basic way. It made all the crap I’ve been memorizing click in. Knowing the why really jumps you further on progress because you can figure out a scale or progression just from your fretboard or keyboard with this basic clear knowledge. Definitely subscribed and will be going through more of your content
This is a the best video for anyone trying to be self taught. We all learn the best by doing, not by hearing the best. This video gives you the tools to be able to do that in a musical context, usually it’s so alien to beginners. The more theory I learn the more I realize music is basically like learning a new language. Or more like learning a new level of advanced calculus in a new language lol.
I swear this whole Guitareo channel has been saving me, I’ve been playing for 6 years (technically 2 years since I keep going off and on) but now I have a foundation where I can truly get better.
Ive been playing guitar for 30 years. I can play some lead and obviously rhythm guitar. I have always had a hard time winging it when playing songs and leads that I invent simply because I dont know music theory. I will be whipping out some cool rhythms and solos until I hit that note that is out of key because I really don't know where I should place my notes. I've watched other videos on music theory but this one is the best one I've seen yet
As guitar and keyboard player.... this makes music so much easier to undertand, i am a musician for 18 years and this video it really enhanced the undertanding of music in a nutshell Great work looking forward for of your educational video and in music you can never stop learn and in two weeks i will complete 27
Thanks for the video and breaking down things systematically. I started taking guitar lessons a year ago at 60 and am just started learning the theory. As you mentioned now I look at the chords in a few songs and try to figure out the key or major or minor chords.
This is fab! I think the reference of a piano makes it much easier, I played for a few years before learning guitar and never realised how much it'll cross over, as I never even went deep into piano theory. Playing up your strings 1 fret at a time, is basically the same as scaling up a piano!
I learned some music theory in middle school when i took piano, and im now into guitar, and wanted to learn how to play something that is my own. I learned to step 7 (but i wasnt taught it in steps) and now that ive seen that last step. it makes a lot more sense to me. thank you for such a great video
Wonderful. You make learning music theory less intimidating and i could understand your lesson so easily. I failed to understand by reading guitar books about scales and you just help me wonderfully. Thank you so much
I was trying to remember my music theory, part of guitar revival number 100 I've had. Found this video. Totally excellent! Great explanation. It's like I understand how the planets orbit the Sun. Thank you.
You are an AWESOME explainer/teacher. Whether you have adhd or not, you definately don't show it in your teaching. And that sir, makes it so easy to understand that I have been playing theory with out knowing I have been. Carry on....and thank you.
I’ve been playing for 2 years now and I’m pretty confident with what notes work together, but I never knew any theory. Now that I watched this around 2 times, I’m super confident in my song writing abilities:)
this was the most understandable video on music theory out of all i watched. all these other videos made me want to pull my hair out of my head, i thought i stupid for not understanding but this video made it really clear. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Thank you, i didnt know theres a way to learn music theory in steps. I learned it randomly and got lost, I feel a bit more comfortable after watching this video :D
I actually remember learning the major and minor scale pattern in school. There were many things we learned in school related to music theory but since it was all messy and we learned it in such a messy way I didnt think it would be related to something so interesting like this since im starting to get into guitar and singing! Thanks for this amazing and spot on explanation!
Thanks so much! I've been watching numerous videos on this topic, but none of them were as clear and concise as yours. I now feel like a heavy weight has been lifted off of my shoulders! Now I'll get my guitar and start using this knowledge 😃🎸
Wow, I've been trying to understand this for such a long time playing guitar and your video made so much more sense than anything I've seen or read. Appreciate the lesson.
Strange how i understood most of this many years ago but didn't put 2 and 2 together to realize i have been on the right track from day one about music theory thanks great video
Amongst all the theory lessons on line, this is the best and the simplest way to understand for a beginner like me who has been trying g to understand the basics of guitar theory. Thank you so much!
First, thank you for the video and the very friendly approach to explain this topic. This video just have open a whole universe for me, i play guitar since 2001 (self taught) and learned the hard way how notes work well, know i can understand what a i'm doing much better.
when I tell you this video has helped me out a lot, I cant begin to tell you how much it has helped over and beyond. He makes things a whole lot easier and with that I just want to say thank you. What helps is writing notes down as you go and pausing the video when needed.
I struggled with memorizing major scales and chords but steps 6, 7 and 8 are game changers. Thank you! There's no need to memorize when you have the scale formula.
i normally dont write comments to any youtube video , but this video helped me a alot and i cannot leave without saying a THANK YOU , loved the vid. understood every bit , I'll practise more , thanks to you
Outstanding video! The one suggestion I have is immediately BEFORE getting to Rule 6, at 4:34 instead of labeling the 12 tones, I think it would be more helpful to actually show the 12 tones on the piano diagram. This was, it's much easier to see the BC and EF rule. Otherwise, when you're labeling the 12 tones first at 5:04, after B people without any knowledge of music theory would expect you to say B sharp/C flat (since after A there was A sharp/B flat). Showing it on the piano keys would make this clearer I think. Otherwise, I thought this was absolutely the best explanation I've seen. Great job. Thank you. Subscribed!
Everyone commenting has been playing for 20+ years I have been playing for around 11 months I’ve got a lot of stuff down but I’m mediocre and I don’t want to be mediocre forever I play guitar and bass all self taught cause I love to learn and your videos (and bassbuzz!) have been the only thing helping me actually progress
Great video and great way to begin explaining theory. I already new the first couple of things but holy crap, #8 makes so much more sense to me now. Never really understood what the key of whatever meant until today. Thanks!
Wow! You are a great teacher. I am putting music theory pieces together by watching different videos on theory (lots of them), seeing the logic now, & simplicity, if well laid out and well explained. Your presentations are the dream. Condensed, logical and easy to follow. What you explain in the very short span of this video (16m) would take someone watching other sources four or five hours to gather - if not more. I can't wait to see what you have on triads, the circle of fifths, fretboard theory and layout, and all the rest of the awesome stuff that I do not even know you might be willing to share and teach. Thank you for the patience and for humanizing guitar theory. Yeah, some of us have a hard time learning if they don't understand the formulas, by being told "that is how you play a C because that is just how it is". I am one, and LOVE theory. You are our hero. Keep it up please. You bring value to the art and a contribution to the arts and humanity.
This is a very needed video; my question is if me and my friends learned everything you taught us in this video - what do we need to know next? Please respond with a video and we are all gonna watch it - i can't say that we will like it ; because it is unwise to like a video without seeing it 1st. But we look forward to supporting your response video with our views and appropriate like response.
I have a great guitar teacher, we jus went through this. It was great to hear this approach, it helped reinforce my knowledge. We haven't hit step 8 yet, so this became a "prep" course. Thanks!
Great lesson i played for a long time by tabs and by ear and becoming pretty decent techniqally but i never had sat down to learn the theory and im glad i found you since im not coming any further musically wise without the knowledge, the rules of music. Sub!

After years of being self taught and learning theory in a very disorganized manner, this video really wrapped everything together for me. It was like having all the right puzzle pieces & then finally finding the order they go in. thank you for the video! :)
Same situation for me too bro
Same here. Wow. Great video!
Look I have played off and on for 20 some years and this still confuses me man.
I play what sounds go together.
I get so confused pver a this .
But I know if I actually knew what cords went with what I would be better all around.
Same for me. Im speechless
Same here. I very much instantly saw the fretboard and started identifying notes so much faster. Incredible video.
This is probably the most concise, yet precise and clear explanation of guitar theory I ever came across on TH-cam! Amazing work!
There’s tons of great guitar lessons on TH-cam it’s all in the person and how they learn
I’m 53 yrs old and I think you just taught me something. Thank you. 🤙🏼
I've been jamming on guitar for 35 years and always put off learning theory because every time someone started to explain it I felt like I was hearing a foreign language. Thanks for giving me a complete understanding in English.

Mann u guys really motivate me, iam23 and i still somtime have doubts if i am little late to play. Kudos to u
Maybe there's still hope for me at 55! Just dusted my guitar off after many years. 😀
Don’t give up! I’m 65 just starting. I can still be a rockstar 🎸🤘
I’m the same . I started not knowing a thing about music but I have the desire to play guitar. I’m determined and practice 2hrs a day. Light bulb moment, clear as a bell now ! Thanks a gazillion :)
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.
@@MusoraOfficial please do a series on it like this

"It's super intimidating topic"
HAHAHA. No. Not anymore. you've explained it splendidly :) new subscriber here!
New subscriber here too. I needed to learn what I'm doing and this video helps a lot.

That was probably the best video on music theory ever. Thanks much!
I know right! Amazing
Just the tip of the iceberg tho.
Now I have a million questions. Why 12 divisions in an octave, why the BC/EF rule, why those scales, etc.
@Collin Allan Begone bots
💯💯💯
The Major 145 and Minor 236 rule is absolutely game changing! That fully cleared up figuring out what key the song is in for me! Thank you!!!
This made me gain so much confidence in my guitar playing

Thanks man! I was scratching my head for the last 10 minutes why 1-4-5 sounds nothing like C major on my guitar! 🤘 Your sequences make perfect sense!
finally getting it. 30 years of playing and now it is making sense. Thank you

Tell me why I was in music class for 6 years and nobody explained any of this to me!!!!
Omg
ikr
Oh bruh, good to know I’m just starting lmao haha
yea im 5 years in and just learnt my first scale. it sucks
Because anything that humans try to organize into a system will almost definitely suck
James Zackary Condeza i mean it sucks i didnt learn it sooner
Thanks for the video and breaking down things systematically. I started taking guitar lessons a year ago at 60 and am just started learning the theory. As you mentioned now I look at the chords in a few songs and try to figure out the key or major or minor chords.
I've understood points 1-7 for a while now but #8 was what I needed! Big breakthrough for me today. great video, thank you!!
Same!
This is fab! I think the reference of a piano makes it much easier, I played for a few years before learning guitar and never realised how much it'll cross over, as I never even went deep into piano theory.

The best teacher I have come across in guitar lessons.
I was trying to remember my music theory, part of guitar revival number 100 I've had. Found this video. Totally excellent! Great explanation. It's like I understand how the planets orbit the Sun. Thank you.
Been playing guitar for 10 years and this is the first time I try to learn some music theory. This helped me a lot. Thank you from italy 🙏🏼🇮🇹
loreleen you’re not alone. 15 years of playing and not a single shred of theory knowledge lol.
You deserve a Nobel prize because you covered every single question I’ve ever had about music
You are an AWESOME explainer/teacher. Whether you have adhd or not, you definately don't show it in your teaching. And that sir, makes it so easy to understand that I have been playing theory with out knowing I have been.
Carry on....and thank you.
this is definitely the best basic music theory lesson on youtube, you're a life savior man thank you so much
As someone who has always felt music intuitively, but then music theory hits me like an alien planet ...this helped my brain sort things out.
I'm old, but basically new to music theory. I have never understood how scales are created. This is very helpful. Thank you! This makes perfect sense.
The best explanation I've seen. Simply described in the optimal amount of time. Thanks!
I’ve been playing for 2 years now and I’m pretty confident with what notes work together, but I never knew any theory. Now that I watched this around 2 times, I’m super confident in my song writing abilities:)
Excellent video. The best that I've seen so far.
just starting to learn guitar, ive gone over ur vid 10plus times. finally its sunk in thankyou for ur help. God bless you brother......

Dude you are a legend i love this, i struggled a long time to understand this and you manhandled my brain with this one video
Best video on music theory I've watch so far. Thanks for the class
Awesome video. Self taught trying to put something together and after waching this video everything is more clear now. Thank You!
This is one of the best explanations I’ve ever seen.
I knew steps 1-7, but step 8 is new to me and now I see why some chord "sequences" sound better to me than others. Thank you!
Played piano for 4 years when I was a kid. I had no idea my teacher was teaching me music theory basics.
I know this will be lost in the comments but THANK YOU!!!!! This video just made the past two years of learning music theory click. Wow. Thank you.
Amongst all the theory lessons on line, this is the best and the simplest way to understand for a beginner like me who has been trying g to understand the basics of guitar theory. Thank you so much!
This is the most amazing video I have seen on music theory! Most of the other videos I have watched only built more confusion.

I struggled with memorizing major scales and chords but steps 6, 7 and 8 are game changers. Thank you! There's no need to memorize when you have the scale formula.
Brilliant lesson, so many mysteries explained in a way I understand, many thanks.
This was unbelievably simple to understand. Let's hope leaving a comment causes the algorithm to suggest this video to others looking to learn.
This is the best video ever made on music theory! Thank you!!
You're a great teacher brother.
Bless you.🙏
I hope he has another video covering all the rest of music theory in this format that was awesome 👌 👏
Very clearly explained. This guy is a great teacher 👍
i normally dont write comments to any youtube video , but this video helped me a alot and i cannot leave without saying a THANK YOU , loved the vid. understood every bit , I'll practise more , thanks to you
man ive been playing for 9 months and this has been really helpful!
Best video that comprehensively. explains the basics of chord theory easy for anyone. Thank you so much 😊
Thanks I was searching TH-cam for long time about major scales you made me understand it easily😘
Thank you! I have never seen it explained so eloquently before.
Great job. Thank you. Subscribed!

Thank you, so much, Nate! I knew more of this than I realized and now know more than I did. Makes sense! Thx again!
Thank You so much... this was perfect... I've been searching for this clarity everywhere and here are you...
Best theory video I've ever seen. Good stuff man.
Clear as glass. Best explanation
That was clear, concise and to the point. Superb explanation!
Very insightful video my man. Planning on purchasing my first music theory book to expand my horizons, God Bless.
Wow the visuals and writing out the cheat sheet made it so much easier to understand!! Thaaaaaank you for simplifying it.
15 years later I learned my first bit of music theory and holy shit a lot of information clicked in my head after learning this simple stuff.
Great explanation! Cleared up a lot of questions for me. Thanks.
Great explanation, one of the best I have seen
Starting to get into focus, thanks for being so clear on this -Great lesson !

Thanks!
Really good video. Great starting point. Thank you Nate.
