My most important finding was: mud guards are ace in winter _but_ fat tyres that sit very snug in the mud guards are a show stopper as soon as there's the tiniest amount of snow. I still can't believe I switched my 38c slicks on the commuter to knobbly 28cs just for winter but it actually works. Skinny tyres also don't float as much on (a bit of) snow, instead they cut right through it. But more importantly, happy birthday Dave. You sure know how numbers work!
I love mudguards, I remember when I first put them on…life changing! But like you say with fat tyres, mud, snow…close clearance…they get all jammed up. Thanks for the birthday wishes 🙏🏼
I find disc brake bikes easier to clean than rim brake. So definitely disc brake for commuting for me. Rim brake clean the whole rim versus disc brake clean just the rotor. Happy birthday!
Dave, you riff like free jazz and freestyle like a poet! I love that you love your bike. I have one of these bad boys waiting for me at the post office. Picking it up tomorrow. Sadly it is not the season in the prairies in the center of Canada for this bike. Had a massive dump of snow today. So choked as it's been milder -4c instead of -15c (Our typical jan-feb has a few weeks of -30c. Brutally cold. Have you heard of windchill? Exposed skin freezes in 1-2 mins when it's windy and -35c.
I've settled on a rigid 29er with 50mm gravel tyres and have also been calling it a grountain bike. I have a crud guard on the down tube and an ass saver "fendor bendor big" which makes it look like a Raleigh Vektar, but keeps the worst of the crap off!
Will be riding my gravel bike more and my mountain bike over winter what I find time I get to spring and first ride on my road bike feels like you are flying along 🚴😁 happy birthday fella have a good one 👍🚴😁
Just got a mountain bike for winter, to play off road. Tried to hang on to road riding but in the dark and wet couldn’t see where to avoid on the piss poor Peterborough roads. So in the mud we go, with a grin
Mud and dirt on the bike is fine, as long it doesn't contain any salt, on the icy winter roads. Then I be cleaning it asap. No don't paint that bike over, it looks great the way it is. My winter bike is a CCM and I bought it in 2016 from Canadian Tire here in Ottawa Canada. It's off the road and needs some work on it. Taking Buses this winter now snow is on the ground. Happy 42nd Birthday Dave!
Salt and snow definitely the problem commuting. A disc brake hybrid/hardtail is the way to go. I prefer fixed gear for grip in slippy conditions and when you are pedalling all the time you warm up faster. Definitely with fenders. Nothing worse than wet shoes in the cold. Here in southern Ontario it only goes down to -15 to -20c. It is mostly wet because of the freeze then melt days. No good for skating or XC skiing. Love Ottawa in the winter. My uncle used to live on the Quebec side near Gatineau Park. Great for skiing and snow shoeing.
I find my wrists hurt if I ride flat bars without bar ends (so 90s). For me, your ultimate winter bike should probably have some large clearance mudguards, just to reduce the amount of mud you end up covered in! Otherwise, the grountain bike seems ideal. Happy belated birthday!
I'm gonna be riding my gravel and cross bikes over the winter. With the ice round here I will be sticking to as much off-road as I can. I've not cleaned my gravel bike much as the outside tap is off while we have this cold snap. That said, cleaning the chain and cassette is easy enough to do. I'm only running 35mm Connectors on my gravel bike which I'm hoping should be alright over the winter. It's still better than running 26mm, and it's more fun right? Anyway enough of my rambling. I enjoyed this vlog, Happy Birthday fella.
i'm generally an offroad rider anyway, not a fan of on road, i have mtb's and gravel bikes but my do it all bike is my cheap 100mm travel trek hardtail, i've done so much riding through the year on it, btw happy birthday, i remember being 42 i recall liking it 🤣🤣

did you get a chance to actually weigh the wheels before you mounted the tires and disks on them? I'd be interested to know exact weight. thanks!

I love those wheels, perfect for that bike.
I think so too!

No, don't paint it! Love the black! Fave winter bike is my carbon Cannondale Fsi 29er with carbon Oliver Lefty. Happy Birthday too!
I kinda love the black on black, so maybe I won’t paint it…but I have to paint something!?!
@@DaveNoakes Haha!! Yeah, I know how u feel! ;-)
Happy Birthday Dave 🙌🏻🍻
Happy Birthday David enjoy your day.🎁🍷🍾🍰🍺🎂
Money no object - for me a Titanium 29er, with Rohloff or Pinion and Gates belt drive would be the ideal winter bike - just hose it down
Happy birthday Dave🎉👍
Happy birthday Dave😁
Oh and happy birthday 🎉🎉🎉
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday🎉
Those tire treads looks so much like Maxxis Ikon.
Happy birthday 🎉 To Greggs for cake!!!
Your content is great, but that is defo a very short travel hardtail (tho pretty sweet all the same)
The same one you use for the 3 other seasons.Just put mudguards on and lights.🤷♂️
True
HB-Day...🙌🍻👍
Have a wonderful birthday leave the frame as it is
Happy Birthday 🎂 to you Happy birthday to you Happy Birthday 🎂 dear Dave Happy Birthday 🎂 to you 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Fair Play Matey ar least we now know what that is. 🤔🤔🤔🤔. It’s a winter bike 🚴👍👍👍. Paint it Dave bright n bold for winter nights to be seen 👍👍👍
Happy Birthday Dave👍🏻 Looks stealth please don’t paint it😢
Have a Smashy Birthday Dave. Keep it standard maybe? 🤭
All winter bikes must be fixed wheel bikes. End of.
Oh and yes, this one needs painting!
WTF...No snow ? You don't need a winter bike if you don't have snow and/or salt on the road. If it's icy, no rubber tire works, you need spikes.
Sorry mr king of deciding what winter is 😂
So hang on... you get flash suspension but you have to make your own sound effects...? that sounds a bit lame... C'mon suspension making people... you can do better than that... :)
Happy Birthday Dave!🥳
Thank you!
