Japanese vs American Cherries | Rainier & Bing Cherry Cultivars 🍒

  • It’s cherry season in Japan and that means - a choice! Japanese Cherries or American Cherries. What’s exactly the difference?
    Japanese Cherry (Sato Nishiki - Yamanashi) 590 yen for 100g ($6 for the small pack)
    American (Rainier cherry) from Washington State 1080 yen for 430g ($10 for the large pack)
    Yamagata produces 70% of Japan's cherries. The cherry was introduced by a German trader Richard Gaertner during the Meiji Period. Yamagata was decided as the ideal place from cultivation because it has little frost and fewer typhoons.

    It doesn't seem like it has been that long since the cherry blossom festival and it is a!ready cherry season! Wow. I have had both cherries, and at the same size. The grocer marked their cherries down and both Rainier cherries (looks like your Japanese cherries) and Bing cherries(looks like your American cherries) were the same price at $2.99 a pound (!!!). So I got both. They were perfectly ripe and equally sweet. initially I thought the golden (Rainier) cherries were overripe as they had gone soft and it is good to know that the softness is a marker of that cherry. I grew up with firm and sweet Bing cherries which go soft when they go bad. There is a pocket of the West Mesa on the Western Slope of Colorado, US, who make (make?!?) ahem, grow the best cherries that I have ever had. I lived there for several years and would go up to the cherry orchard right outside of Grand Junction and buy them by the Brown grocery bag full. My father lived with me and he had pretty severe rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. He would eat an entire bag full and feel good for weeks. He had a hard time in the winter and I only now realize that I could have frozen them for winter. It has been proven with peppers and berries, John, that the darker the color the higher levels of antioxidants. The substance that causes the darker colors is the substance that is antioxidant. I can't remember what it is, and serotonin(which it is NOT) keeps flashing. I could look it up but, well, you will want to look it up to read the article. I have read articles that just say fruits and vegetables but I believe that is suppositional rather than scientific. :::::::::::::sitting back down:::::::::::::

    I work in a packing warehouse in Washington state and let me tell you that when packing orders for Japan they have to be the biggest size (8-9) and must be sorted as perfect as can be. The Japanese cherry is probably more expensive because it’s more fragile it can easily be bruised like the Rainer in WA. Ever since I started working with cherries they aren’t my favorite but I love the red varieties more then the Rainer though rainers are good frozen.

    I live in Washington state. The Bing cherries are nice, but our Rainier cherries are better. Cherries grow very well here. My neighbors have Bing cherry trees (as does one of my girlfriend's rental houses). The neighbor's trees produce more fruit than they can eat and they share them with their neighbors. I prefer the Rainier cherries, but they are a bit pricy if you don't have a tree. Still, there are plenty of famer's market stands that carry them when they are in season and you can get some really good deals on them there.
    I'm not sure I've had a Japanese cherry though I'm certain I'd enjoy them. But I think you get to enjoy a Japanese Cherry every day. ;-) Say Hi! to Kanai for me!
    Softness is mostly about how ripe the cherry is. And sweetness is a function of both ripeness and how much sun the tree received while the fruit was maturing. I think Bing cherries transport well because they don't spoil quickly. But that's partly because the fruits are quite red from the start and can be picked before they reach their peak while they are still firm so they survive shipping better.
    Commercial Bing cherries tend to be picked while still quite firm, while the local cherries were harvested more recently and picked much closer to their peak. So even though I enjoy Bing cherries, I think most other varieties tend to taste better. You probably got luck with those Bing cherries. They probably had good growing conditions this year and were at peak ripeness without having spoiled or being too bruised. On the other hand the local variety may have experienced less ideal climate this year - thus Kanai's conclusion...

    American cherries come in many colors also. i like the yellow and blush ones better. the red ones are also many varieties, going from red to dark red to black to almist purple black. many different cherry varieties. some of the blush cherries are blush on the inside as well. most fruits have many different varieties. you should stratify those seeds and start some baby cherry trees.

    It's a supply and demand economy where few are grown so they tend to be pricier and are considered more perfect than the Bing cherry which is grown en masse in america in a few spots but usually only one or two spots in Japan are known for growing edible cherries so they tend to price them higher.

    I wonder if Japanese cherries are also more expensive because of less yield/supply? All the darker coloured fruits like cherries, berries, coffee, and red wine have more polyphenols which are good for health, probably the reason why we are instinctively drawn to deep coloured fruits. Man, when cherry season comes round I eat so much of the stuff that my tongue get raw 😬

    I want to debunk this cause it could be dangerous if ingested in daily quantity( largely) large amount of tannins can cause higher frequency blood clot in people with heart problem, and will cause you to have indigestion and/or stomach, especially those who are sensitive to it . Tannins are okay in small dosages but like all things too much of one thing is bad for you. Polyphenol is the chemical compound that's good for you. Anthocyanin is the compound of phenol that gives fruits their red, purple color. ANDDDD side note :The Rainer cherry has a smaller growing period and compared to Red Bing cherries( american red cherries) has less acidity and is actually more sugar content than a bing red cherry. The bing cherries taste sweeter due to balance of higher acidity, making the sugar/sweetness more pronounced. It's weird food science 101.

    They are both American. Bing and Rainier Cherry cultivars were both developed in Washington and Oregon. The reason why Japanese fruit cost more is because they don't have the space to have large groves of trees. Actually, American cherries are just as good as Japanese cherries (maybe better). The FDA has strict rules for fruit. Compare cherries from Chile, Argentina and the USA. The USA fruit is clearly superior. Bing and Rainier cherries are different cultivars and have different flavor.

    • @onlyinjapanGO
      @onlyinjapanGO  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I am not sure it’s exactly the same. Japan usually cross breeds these fruits and makes it - their own. The white strawberry is certainly cross bred, same with the dozens of original res strawberry cultivars for green house growing. It was be interesting to taste a Yamagata “rainier” with one from Washington State. I am from the east coast of the US and hadn’t seen a pale red rainier cherry 🍒 that I can remember. Always bing.

      @onlyinjapanGO  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be. The store said they believed they were “Rainier” but they call them “American Cherry” - most imported from Washington State are Rainier to Japan.

    Looks can be deceiving. As long as they taste good that is all that matters to me at least no way would I pay so much for just a few cherries just because they look good on the outside.

  • @OllamhDrab

    Hee, cool. I tend to doubt there's a kind of cherry I wouldn't like... But it's very unlikely there are GMO cherries: they are changed over time by crossbreeding and I think grafting varieties to select for preferred qualities. ie, the old fashioned way. :)

  • @KonSimpl72
    @KonSimpl72 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd go for the Japanese ones - most likely (let's not kid ourselves here), fewer pesticides and GMOs.

    monoculturism in plant crops that is why there is only one major banana and apples are a handful - same with most widely cultivated foods there used to many more regional types

    • @iskandartaib

      Depends where you live. Here you can plant bananas in your backyard and there are dozens of varieties. There are big, starchy ones, tiny sweet ones, etc.

    You make me laugh, by talking about gmo... 😂 There are simply different varieties (cultivar) of cherries : burlat, bigarreau, griottes, kerelis... Your japanese cherries look a bit like our Napoléon cherries (or Royal Ann cherries). 😉

      When I made a video on White Strawberries, I remember ALL the talk about Strawberries being GMO. Cross breeding etc. I don't know if people knew the different (cross breeding has been going on for a very long time) ... I though so too with the looks. They could be Rainier Cherries. Much preferred in Japan compared to the Bing cherries which is what I thought the dark ones were today. In Japan, they're just called "American"
