I remember watching this live on television when I was a kid. And I saw him playing for Victoria and Australia a number of times at the Adelaide Oval. When Jones was in full flight there were few who could match him. He was a brilliant batsman, a damn good fielder and a handy part time off-spinner.
He was so exciting that you wished for a quick wicket so he could come to the crease. It meant drop everything and watch him bat. He always delivered. What an exciting cricketer who was one of the highlights of Aussie summers following the slump of the mid 1980’s. R.I.P. to a legendary six hitting batsman.
A vey sad day for me with the passing of Dean Jones. I was at the Gabba that day as a 12yo boy when he took England apart. What a great show. Getting a little bit teary eyed right now.
I was also there as a 12 year old, it is one of the greatest innings I ever saw and ingrained in my memory for ever. Deano was a true legend of the game, and he will be missed by many.
Deano, along with AB and Viv were my childhood heroes. Like you said, no lid and still front foot pulls dudes forward of square. Vale Dean, you set the tone for the modern one day batsman, never afraid to set an example on and off the field
Dean Jones had lived the life of a cricketer to the fullest, enjoyed every moment his cricketing career and had been always a winner on the field will remain as such no matter whether Australia had won or lost the match.
One of the most gifted players to play cricket loved watching the great dean jones bat he was our best batter for a long time rest in peace deano what a legend
When I was a boy I specifically ask for a Kookaburra for Chrissy because of Deano... The original one day powerhouse. Cheers to you champ, thanks for the memories.
Even if today's batsmen play an innings like this for 10 times it would not be equal to Deano's innings.. you will be sorely missed Deano.. Rest in Peace
I remember as a young kiwi in the early 90s just how exciting it was to watch Dean Jones in his prime, and just how huge it was when his wicket fell. Those brilliant smashes over long on were a thing to behold. RIP. Sad loss, but he left his mark on the world in a great way.
RIP to the legendary Dean Jones, I may not have been old enough to witness his batting but I sure have enjoyed watching the highlights over the years

And not for the spectacle

This proves how powerful a batsman Dean Jones was.
RIP Deano, absolutely gutting. But...run out first ball here!
