I'm so glad i was watching cricket in those days. Australia produced some of the best bowling, fielding & batting ever seen. Hayden, Symonds & Gilly would hit the ball so hard.....
Remember this match like it was yesterday. I was playing junior cricket, and I was named captain for my side for the first time. Best day of my life as a kid, haha
Andrew Symonds rest in peace with God brother all Australians and the rest of the cricket world will miss you brother and God will look after you for ever
I was at this match. Sri Lanka were right on top, but at 0:43 Ponting's great shot changed the whole tone of the match and he and Symonds dominated from then on.
@@avijitsikdar2604 Chappell got 4 test ducks in a row, and 7 in a row if you include one-dayers. Still his average is higher than Pontings so go figure…
5:43 That moment when Ponting must have felt vindicated for his offer to all other captains, who refused it. They made their bed so they can lay in it. Ponting had a perfect view of it bouncing before it was held. Ponting superb. He so often played beautifully in Sydney. Great place to watch cricket. Playing more a test match innings when 13-3, then settled into ODI mode. Symonds was awesome. Great knocks.
How good is it when Symonds was walking back up thru the crowd and the guy was wanting a hug from him and he pushes him away with his bat.....ahhhhh the good old days.......do it know and it would be everywhere about how naughty he is.
Besides the sensational knock of the two legends, I just love the end of Andrews great knock the fan tried to hug Roy while walking off and gets the end of his wood 🪵 haha 😂
That shot from 'Roy' at the 4:35 mark was brutal. Could've done a heap of damage to 'Punter' much in the same way than he did when he gave that almighty shirtfront to that streaker at the 'GABBA 😂
Not one of Tony Greig's best commentary moments with the Jayawardene "catch". Ponting stayed because it clearly half volleyed to Jaya's hands. Richie Benaud's pause during the replay spoke volumes. Tony had a weird obsession with pleasing Sub-Continental fans.
And he was having a go at Ponting for not walking after asking captains to agree to take fielder’s word, but doesn’t mention that those captains mostly refused.
@@andrewwinch474 Yeah exactly. Ponting offered it, other captains said no, so he made those captains eat their words. I see no issues with that behaviour
Plus Ponting wasn’t unsighted. There was no ambiguity as to whether it had carried or not. He saw the clear half volley from his position and rightfully stood his ground.
If it was borderline you could make an argument about Ponting being a hypocrite but it was such a clear half volley that he saw. Quite poor sportsmanship I can't believe the fielder didn't know
5:45 to Pontings catch/drop catch. 100000000%. Biggest douche to ever pick up a microphone. I have no idea how he kept a spot in the commentary box for so long. Maybe said 1 thing out of 20 that was insightful... Should not have been allowed anywhere near the Australian cricket scene.
What a puerile little man Ponting is, makes a stand and asks other country's to advise whether the ball has been caught? Clearly the ball was caught, and the Sri Lankans told Ponting!!! He then hid behind the umpires decision, what a craven hypocrite!!! btw I am an Aussie, and a cricket lover, that just happens to hate dishonesty.
@@ForgotMyOrange The question was, were there any fingers under the ball when it bounced? It certainly didn't bounce before the fielder, so were his fingers splayed or not? I suppose when it's uncertain the doubt goes with the batsman. My initial reaction was it was caught. I'm one for going on the umpire's decision though so I have no problem with Ponting standing his ground.
You clearly don't remember the sequence of events in relation to asking the fielders word on whether it bounced. All the other captains said no hence why he didn't ask the fielder. And the 2nd problem with your incorrect comment is that it clearly bounced.
RIP ANDREW SYMONDS❤, I loved watching him play,Ponting and Symonds also 2 of the greatest fielders ever.
Watching those two and Michael Clarke was always fun to see.
as an englishmen we always loved symonds. obviously a quality bloke. demoralising when he got going though against our bowlers
