This music is so evocative you can almost see the episode. I love the fact that the sinister music plus the electronic trilling is enough to make me feel unnerved, in a good way. Time to get the story out again for another viewing. A lot of the 1960s and 70s music in particular was so clever at making us feel uneasy as a backdrop to what we were seeing on screen. Wonderful stuff.
Thank you so much for this. Spearhead is still one of my fav stories after all these years and the auton music is still terrifying. I couldn't find it anywhere!
Yes, I think they were probably trying to break the sinister mood with jolly music in some lighter scenes as a contrast, in order to then crank up the sinister mood again.
I always think of it as Liz’s theme, but I know what you mean: it really captures a moment in cultural history and all the confidence and urbanity of the new Doctor.
It’s miraculous, encapsulating all the optimism, sophistication and imaginative potential of this wonderful series. Who would have expected a sliver of purely adult cool jazz to announce Liz Shaw?
Even today you cannot replicate the richness, range, the tension and atmosphere of acoustic instruments with digital samples and computers. _The real thing still sounds so much better._

I first watched New Who and started Classic Who whilst waiting for each new series premiere. I have to say, I really loved Classic Series 7; still had moments of fun and eccentricity, whilst being somewhat more serious and even mature, I might say (for starters, there were actual repercussions for the Doctor's actions - and those of his friends as well) Come series 8, Jo and The Master show up and it feels we're back to "let's entertain the kiddos", somewhat like Troughton's series 4-6. Not that I don't like "Terror of The Autons" or "Carnival of Monsters" or don't have fun watching "Claws of Axos" or "The Mutants", but it felt like a step backwards from series 7 : /

Dudley had an 8 piece orchestra on this score - a rarity!

LOVE this story. It's one of the best in the classic series.
For anyone looking for the track where the Doctor escapes in the wheelchair, it's at 4:01
Some atmospheric dramatic pieces here, but a few remind me of Carry On scores.

1:53-2:34 The Third Doctor's Theme.
I have always thought of it as Liz Shaw's theme.
