  • Osteoporosis affects millions of Americans each year. It is characterized by low bone mass density that can lead to compression fractures of the lumbar spine (low back) and thoracic spine (mid-back). If you suffer from Osteoporosis and think you may have suffered a compression fracture of your spine, here are 2 simple at-home tests you can try. Remember to always talk to your doctor about your health and these tests are not to be used to diagnose, but rather to educate you on the possibilities.

      @@FrontRowwithEd Hello
Could you make a video with exercises for people who have vertebral fractures? My mother is elderly and has a hunchback, I would like to help her... please? Thank you

Be careful with excercise make sure they are for your particular issue and not just " elderly" or " bad back" ... my aunt did a very simple twist and broke her spine. She thought it was safe because it was for elderly chair excercise. And some are OK for some but not others so make sure you're double checking that it's good advice before you do it.

@Empregosparafobicossociais I know don't do twists...my elderly aunt has had thoracic fractures and in agony for years. Very sad situation. My mom reversed her osteopenia recently and she uses comphrey ointment to heal fractures... be careful with excercises make sure they are specifically for the issues your mom has and not just for elderly or for sore backs... my aunt did a very tiny twist and fractured her back and put herself back in agony. .. shes never not in agony tbh. Its tough seeing somone go through this.

If you can’t do stand up yoga., try chair yoga. It’s all about elongating , stretching & strengthening. This is just “opinion” I’m not a medical doctor.
I have to declare that otherwise I’ll get banned.

T12 is breaking down from the inside out. Doctors have said I must have had a spine fracture in my youth. I can lay flat (as possible) on a flat floor and after about 6 seconds my back will pop (loud) and my spine will relax.... It isn't painful when it pops, just a little unnerving to know it's going to do that

What if you pass these tests but you've lost 1 1/2 inches in height? (5/8 inch, for me, since last May, 8 months.) Where is the height going? I don't know if I do pass, but I've had sudden onset backpain that's now chronic, husband made me get a DEXA scan, shows severe osteoporosis (lumbar t score -4.6, hips -3.3, 3.5). I'm "only" 61, and though the last year has been rough--much harder to push myself to do stuff when significant events (injuries) happen when I work out, but I know I have to figure out what I can do, and do it--but I'm still pretty cardiovascularly fit, and strength training has been part of life since college. I've definitely been feeling like an old woman, now it's like, haha, guess what, you're a 61 year old in an 81 year old's body! But that's not quite true yet, is it? (My PCP must be on vacation--have not heard from her yet, have been left to plumb the internet for answers. :-😜)
    Edit: October 2023
I have now learned I have fractured at least 3 vertebrae, possibly 6. I've lost an inch in height since my post in January. Two of these fractures are at T6 and 7. There's no specific incident that I can recollect that caused them. Am wondering if my job (hairdresser) actually caused them? And/or whether the pain I have when I work is because of them? If continuing to do this kind of work inflames them? It's difficult to get answers to these questions.

Go immediately for a CT scan or MRI with that much height loss so they can check for one.or more vertebral compression fractures! I recently had such similar pain and a visit confirmed 3" height loss. MRI shows an acute compression fracture and I've been told to get the kyphoplasty immediately or risk more fracture. Please don't delay!

You two should say something here or your stuff does not get out. You do a disservice if you do not reply.
i have lost 4 inches. I hit 61 soon. An MRI shown to me by a chiropractor said I had several discs and vertabrae falling apart. He put me into a state of panic. They saw a black spot at the base of the spot and inferred Cancer, which angered my husband. He started reading about problems with Dexa scans and MRIs and regular xrays that produce false positives. When the change hit me, I was unprepared and unaware until I started falling on my face and getting hurt. I lifted stuff on a farm and popped two vertabrae. The MRI claims that I have severe deterioration of the spine. I ended up hearing from Dr. Ken Berry and Dr. Shawn Baker that insist that diet is very ket to keeping bone and muscle strong. So we now eat meat, practice Somatic Movements, walk 10 miles a week and swim 3 days a week. I feel better but still not 100%. I find doing floor exercises are very advantageous since I am not fighting gravity. Learning to walk, sit, sleep and breathe properly is an ongoing challenge I face every day. I wish for the best for you. Thank uou for your comment sharing your dilemma.😊

@@cinmac3 No, the procedure seems to have done the trick, thank goodness. Still, it could happen again so I'm adjusting my activity and getting physical therapy.
