My diagnosis of osteoporosis of the spine and osteopenia of the hip a year ago at 65 was a huge shock to me because I have been practicing yoga for over a decade, have done weight bearing for several years, take vitamin supplements, no smoking, little alcohol etc. My common sense told me it all wasnt enough, so I have been on medication for one year (absolutely No side effects). I do specific Yoga poses for osteoporosis now and specific weight bearing exercises for osteoporosis. I am due for a dexa scan soon and am hoping my Score will have improved and that maybe I can come off the bisphosphonate. I enjoy your channel!
Can I please ask you what medication you are taking? I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis yesterday and in a bit of shock. I’m not sure I want to take the medications. I see side effects of anxiety and depression and I am already in a depression with high anxiety. TIA Elaine
Are you eating 800 - 1200 mg of calcium/day? This is so important. I have osteopenia and refuse to take meds - the research I've done has horrible results. What I eat: canned bone in salmon - 1 can/wk, dark leafy greens, yogurt, cottage cheese, Take Vit. D3/K2, legumes, berries. I read all labels and hit aprox 800/day. Even too much calcium isn't good. Make sure you get the blood panel done and the urine analysis. Also I walk with a 18lb weighted vest.
Thank you so much for these simple exercises! I have spinal stenosis, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis as well as osteoporosis. I know, I'm a mess. I am so happy to find bone strengthening exercises I can begin to do immediately.

I am a generally very healthy 83 year old female. After a bone density test, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist in February. In the meantime, after much research I have chosen your 4 exercise and Cal Mag plus K2 liquid vitamins. My question is do you have specific e recuses for an ankle which is definitely weaker, other than doing more repetitions? I feel very lucky to have found your site. I will do everything not to take medication.
TY Ed ! 4 exercises: sitting squats ; wall push ups ; calf raises ; shoulder diagonal . May I add impact moves such as marching with a stomp or hops , if you can’t jump . With artrosis , I can’t jump , but I can certainly stomp , march or hop . Also , I finish my heel raises with a stomp , to create that “ vibration “ bone needs to become stronger . It’s great sharing info that could help us ladies with osteo issues . Thx and Merry Xmas ! ❤
You are very welcome and Merry Christmas to you also! Yes, I love the "impact" exercises you are doing to add another level of "stress" to the bones to come back stronger. Keep it up!

Thank you for a great video. I usually look to TH-cam for watercolor information. I'm a 65 year old retired RN, having survived five craniotomies for a pesky brain tumor that led to left sided weakness and severe osteoporosis ans 43 degree scoliosis. Hi, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis of the spine, noted I tried to lift my spouse without thinking and fractured my L1 (compression fracture). It's been 9 months, and still have pain. Surgery is the only way, but am trying other alternatives with exercise. I can't sit long unless I am in a slight reclining position, no straight up sitting. I use a back brace at times. Also, it kills to bend over doing yardwork. I need advice how to do yardwork which I loved. Thank you
do not add yard work until you are fully recovered and then give it more time even after you feel recovered. Yard work and any bending over are very hard on lower back recovery. I know, happened to me.

GREAT presentation of most helpful information. I'll start today! Any exercises for newly diagnosed scoliosis of lower right side of spine, from the base up about five vertebrae? Thank You!
I had polio as an 8-year-old. I recovered but now I have Post Polio Syndrome. I am 82. While I was on HRT my bone scan was encouraging. But when I had Breast cancer I had to stop HRT. Now I have osteoporosis. I can do the first two exercises, but my left side is paralysed and I am lacking in gluteus maximus on that side. Also my leg is completely paralysed from the knee down so I cannot do heel raises on that side. I worry about breaking my femur. I wear callipers and cannot walk much.
Thank you for this video. Question: Does swimming four times a week equal the same as these weight bearing exercises? I swim all four strokes, four times a week, averaging 2 miles each time. I can't find an answer on the internet to the benefits of swimming. The water acts as resistance and I am building up muscle, but do you have to have body weight on your bones to help with severe osteopenia?
Hello Wendy, great job swimming 4 days per week, that's awesome! And while you are building muscle with the resistance of the water, you should still do land based strengthening exercises 2 times per week.
I am so glad I found you. Thank you so much. I have ITB pain all day. Do you have exercises for this? I am so glad you showed how to do these and other exercisers without getting on the floor.

Thank you. I really appreciate this instructional video. I wish there were some good, fun and safe exercise routines for people with Osteoporosis, like there are for cardio, dance and walking. Just a thought.
With an app on your phone you can set up a playlist with the kind of music you find invigorating, motivational and fun. Match the kind of music you want to each exercise, ( or group of exercises). It may take a bit of trial and error, but once you set it up ( and have your exercises memorized in order of the music), you are good to go! If you don't have a phone with which you can set this up, just put on a CD ( old school). Good Luck and have fun!
You are very welcome, happy to help! I have a few videos on lower back pain as well too that you could check out if your back continues to bother you. If you can’t find the specific video you’re looking for let me know and I will send you the link, take care.
Another question. How strong a band should one get to start? I am a 78 year old woman who has not done strengthening exercises before although I did yoga.
Great question, I would get a 3-pack of bands, different colors are different strength. Start with the Yellow (usually the lightest) and build up slowly as you get stronger.
Hello ,ur Vedios are so informative…thank u so much I am 30 yrs old n just found out that I have osteopenia…. Em very depressed… is it completely reversible at this age .my T-score is -2.2 in spine n -1.2 on right hip
What specific targeted exercise do you recommend to increase bone density in L1-L4? My bone density is decreasing in this area only. Thank you. I currently exercise 7 hours/ wk (Pilates, Yoga, weights).
Your exercises are easy for me except for that chair squat you perform with a big smile, lucky you. Sometimes it takes me over an hour to get up from my chair and this is even with armrests and after having taken 2 Advil. I can't believe how so many people complaining about their physical problems seem to have no problem with chair squats. Squatting has to be one of the most difficult exercises, second only to getting up from the floor.
I love these... ive done some of the wall sets.... I have fibromylagia... must use care w.my muscles so as to not cause muscle pain...will share your video so i can do it ...
May be too late, but I have no other choice than to save my Bones. Finally AGREED to medication. Prolia. For several years I was prescribed Fosamax, picked up the prescriptions, but NEVER took one pill. I saw it as battery acid. 73, no meds, active, played 54 holes of golf over 3 days a week ago. No pain. No symptoms. New Doc who said. "You gotta do something". Please, trust me. Just took the first injection. Can exercise really rebuild bone?
In my opinion, exercise (especially weightlifting) is a critical part of helping to manage osteoporosis whether you take the medication or not. We need strong muscles as we age! Best wishes
Can you please give me exercises suitable for osteoporosis with a fractured L1 from a big fall. It's been almost 4 months since my fall and my fracture is not healing. I would really appreciate your help. Thank you in advance.
I'm 70 with osteoporosis. I'm vegan and get plenty protein. I walk 30 minutes most days. No meds except vitamin D. I've started your exercises. I want to add a weighted vest to my walking. What weight would you recommend? I was thinking 8 lbs. Thanks so much for your videos.
Hmmmm ... good question about the weighted vest! I hope they answer. I wonder if hand weights would be recommended instead or in addition to a weighted vest ... ? Stay well! 🙂
Hello Gail, great question. I would start at 3-5lbs and let your body get use to the extra “weight”. Better to be safe than too sore. Keep up all the good work!!
Great info! I am 82, have hyper parathyroid issue. I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis in my left arm & osteopenia in my spine. I would really like to avoid those drugs so these exercise should really help. I already walk at least 30 minutes a day but knew I needed to add upper body exercise. These will be a great start.
Keep it up!

I’m in my 70’s. My bone density result was 54% in one hip 58% in the other. My doctor had not even studied about any one with that rate of fragility that could 0:06 0:06 still walk. It is very painful, but who cares! Perhaps with

Very helpful videos that reinforce a few things I’m already doing! I can’t do any weight bearing at all with my right arm, so I have to modify a lot of exercises (band work is out unless it’s something I can do with one side of the band secured in a door). These are perfect for me after a kyphoplasty procedure for vertebral compression. Your demonstration and accompanying explanations are well delivered. Thanks!
Are you are very welcome, good luck with your recovery!
Thank you
Have bone broth regularly n doing the back strengthening exercises at least 3-4 times a week will definitely make a big difference
do not add yard work until you are fully recovered and then give it more time even after you feel recovered. Yard work and any bending over are very hard on lower back recovery. I know, happened to me.

Just found this channel. I have osteoporosis and have had 3 fractures over the past 10 years. I was told people with osteoporosis should not do exercises that involve bending or twisting the spine. Is this true? My PT said it shouldn't be a problem but I want to be sure I'm safe. Thank you.
Yes, you do need to be careful with how you move. The exercises I talk about in the video are safe. Here's another video you may find helpful th-cam.com/video/_T5h5RsVDmc/w-d-xo.html

I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis but as I understand it, it is not muscle I need to strengthen but bones, so I was told weight bearing exercise like walking ( which I’ve always done ) I walk my dog 7k a day, and weights, so that my osteoblasts get to work!
I’m taking bone grown from garden of life have frieds that they say it really work their score was so much better hopping mines to
Muscles help control protect the bones..knee pain..knee muscles will support that joint. Walking is the best for sure..
I think it would be helpful to know for each exercise - what specific bone is being strengthened.

Excellent video. Clear, concise with helpful hints and options without being too overwhelming. Thanks!

Best wishes
