I was reminiscing about warhammer fantasy and taking ranks upon ranks of saurus, so I wrote a list of 40 saurus to get the feeling back :D Slann, Kroxigor, Saurus Guard (reinforced), 2 x saurus warriors (reinforced), oldblood on carno, aggradon lancers. 1970 and some scaly goodness.
The astrolith bearers change the point efficiency. Still surprisingly competitive for warriors with guard. I think edge is for guard, especially with their better damage.
Nice video, I’d never run it out of boredom but it’s nice to see stats on the stuff we knew were anvils. Running a Saurus / Krox focused list this weekend with the obligatory RoR🙏🏼. All a part of The Great Plan
I'm using that last tournament list you shared before as my blue print for what to build into for 4th, 60 Saurus warriors and 20 Saurus guards, I'm definitely ready to turn and burn with some Saurus warriors.
Hey Caleb I did this math a while ago too. But when doing this practice it is important to know that the cost of Saurus/krox with 6+ ward includes the cost of an astroloth banner. And ofc the 5+ ward on guard comes from the slann. If you were going to use those two units it’s all well and good but if you weren’t going to use a slann/astrolith normally then it’s important to remember that cost in your calculations. Also if you at considering buffs from other units; we often take a starseer in almost every list and I think you should do the math of its 5+ ward on a few units to see what the best units are for the starseer to use its buff on.
I can vouch that this type of list is actually pretty fun - I am an old school Lizardman player and have an unhealthy love of Saurus bricks, so I always bring ranks of my old 1990's plastics and metal out. My last list had 2x 20-warrior and 1x 10-warrior bricks with an Old Blood on Foot (trait for free AOA for a friendly when he charged) and Astrolith Bearer supported by a Slann, Starpriest, a unit of skinks and 2x units of terradons for screens and objectives, and a Salamander (Spawn of Chotec). Every time my Soulblight friend slams Manfred et al into my lines, he keeps getting shocked at how immovable 40 wounds backed up by these buffs/debuffs is (even with his Mortal Wound undead nonsense haha). Since sadly no matter how cool the OG Salamander is, the Spawn is garbage and bit-off like 2 wounds across 3 games (never had the glob do a single damage....), and the Astrolith - while very defensive - didn't feel like he was pulling his points, I took them out to change the 10-warrior squad to a full 10-Guard squad and a Stegadon Chief (nobody can shift the metal paperweight!). It's not meta-competitive or anything, but I'm looking forward to getting a game soon, and I just really love playing grindy unkillable Saurus.
Tried 20 warriors with an astrolith banner bearer in a block last night against SBGL… zombie dragon and 10 blood nights deleted them in one turn… hurt to watch 😂 and yes they were on an objective and had a screen of 5 raptadon chargers!!
I just see one problem with bringing the Slann. Although he can bring units back, you're also talking about building an army around being survivable. So what good is the slann if most of your Saurus units make it to round 4 or 5? I wonder if you wouldn't be better off bringing Kroak, trying to advance him behind the Sauruses, casting purple sun to help with the Saurus's attacks, casting empowered celestite to help with Saurus rend, and casting Celestial deliverance as much as possible. Add a starpriest to hang back and target units near terrain with the realmshaper, cast celestial deliverance as much as possible, and use Sunclaw starhost every combat phase with your Sauruses. That's a LOT of possible chip damage coming out every turn. Then hang out on objectives (inside your territory, with Quetzel the Preserver), use the Hunters to slow you opponent down, and grind them down. I'm starting to see a list...gotta go.
My issue with warriors is that if you don't already control the objective, you don't get the save bonus until the end of the turn, it just feels really bad if you're trying to take your opponent off said objective...
Having played a game where I slammed down 40 Saurus Warriors against an opponent and watched them just grind down everything, this all tracks for me lol. I'm curious how well the Unkillable Trogladon would be for this (Oracle on Trogladon w/ Being of stars for unrendable and Entracies so he regens in every hero phase and every end phase)
Please 🙏 test this list in an actual game. I’m tired of cavalry meta and I want to give my raptodon and aggrodons a much needed vacation. I just don’t have the Saurus models and time to this “theoretical list” before committing a bunch of purchases for Christmas 🎅
It still negates rend beyond the +1 to armor saves. So for example 10 Saurus Warriors wholly on an objective that All Out Defense would be negating up to Rend 2 weapons and have a 4+ save against that, or if the enemy attacks were Rend 1, the Saurus would still have a 3+ save as they have the double +2 to armor saves from difference sources. Hope that helps!
How valuable is a pure anvil unit actually? Most lists play 2-3 quick hammers, 2-3 quick screens/tactic units, a control piece, another hero and if there is space some flex units. Anvil units can get your enemy stuck, but themselves they are also 300-500 points that are stuck. The opponent can use them for battle tactics or just ignore them because most anvils are also quite slow. So how do you actually use an anvil in the meta, the ghb and the battleplans… not in a vacuum and also not against some mediocre opponent/list? Also most hammers in armies can still break the anvil. Morghasts or any other real heavy hitting dmg pieces do 20+ damage against your save, then there are other damage sources to consider or multiple units who get in with fight first or can benefit from power through against your battleplans anvil to charge it again later.
@@Nummerschield 40 is the most I have put on the board in a long time! 20 can make it into just about any list as your objective holders. 40 is usually a Saurus focused list. 60 would be a pure tank/spam list!
Slann gives his toughest battles to his scaliest warriors 🙏
Your videos always kinda remind me of auspex tactics in terms of quality and in-depth breakdowns. Just amazing 😁

Let's see it this weekend!
Man, I wanted to see how this would have done vs your Trolls!
@@CalebHastings let's do it!
Now I wanna try a tanky list like this with Stormcast Annihilators and debuffs to hit, wound and rend🤔
My son (Stormcast player) used to do that to me with a big block of Protectors with their 2+ save!
Im definitely making an all Saurus or all skink list. I just want bodies… what do you recommend chief?? And what about all Saurus Guard vs Warriors?
I ran a list with 2x20 warriors against krondys and by the time I took down Krondys I still had 5 models in one unit and a full second unit lol
Nice!!

Can all-out-defense and the warrior abilitt stack? I was under the impression that positive modifiers to save rolls could nor be improved beyond +1.

How many Saurus warriors make sense to have? 40 or 60? Personally, 40 is a good number.

Too bad its so painful to activate the saurus warriors bonus
Nothing feels worse than being 0.5 inch short of getting the entire block onto the objective!
