  • In the first nine minutes, Fr. Thomas Keating gives a marvelous introduction to Centering Prayer. He then discusses the season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days, until Christ's passion, death, and resurrection.
A quote from Thomas Keating's book "The Mystery of Christ" lays the foundation for what Thomas is talking about in this video:
“Each feast of the liturgical year is both an event to be celebrated and a grace to be received. The grace of Christmas is to know Christ in his humanity. The grace of Epiphany is to know him in his divinity. The grace of Holy Week is to know him in his emptying and dying. The grace of Ascension is to know him as the cosmic Christ. It is to know the glorified Christ, who has passed, not into some geographical location, but into the heart of all creation."

This talk was originally part of a retreat with Fr. Thomas at First United Methodist Church in Austin, TX on February 9, 2008, sponsored by Contemplative Outreach, which promotes and supports the practice of Centering Prayer world wide: www.contemplati....

Through his books and especially through his recordings, Fr. Keating is one of my greatest teachers. I’m very grateful such a man as he lived during this generation so that I could profit so richly from his knowledge and his profound spiritual development. Thank you good sir. Praise Christ.

No apostle practiced “lent.” It’s a Catholic fabrication.

@@suzannemcmaken4648 Matthew 4:11 Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert. The Spiritual Exercises of the Lenten season is to practice these 40 days (as Jesus in the desert). These are holy days for Fasting, Prayer, and Almsgiving with deeper intention for inner transformation. The knowledge of 'self' strips away arrogance and fosters a loving awareness of our utter dependence on God. It is a more concentrated time of the year to turn away from evil and turn back to God and become further refined. For example to go without food (or other temptations) one quickly realizes how truly weak, fragile and dependent we are! We are invited by God (the Divine) who loves us far more than we can ever imagine (just as we are) to seek deeper prayer/ solitude, letting go of worldly distractions/obstacles; and to be more willingly serve others. Suzanne try not to get 'hung up' on Lent as per Catholic tradition. We, as Catholics in Lent are choosing to practice these exercises to further surrender with an even deeper commitment and purpose so that God can prune us, heal us, and transform into His Light. I need to recognize the faults in me that hinder the growth of peace and inner freedom and surrender everything in me. ( "Silence is the great reality...what is my motive? The Spirit reveals to me the many motivations in myself. Lent is about the truth and motivation. " --Thomas Keating

Thank you so much for publishing this video. I love the fact that Thomas is so open-minded and actually uses terms such as third-eye, energy, surrender and enlightenment, which some christians shy away from or are even scandalized by. And that he is so respectful to other spiritual traditions that understand contemplative prayer or meditation and mysticism.

What did Jesus say about the “Lenten season” and contemplative prayer?
    Answer: NOTHING.

No one really knows all that Jesus said, especially to his apostles. But contemplative prayer and the prayer of the heart is the main point here, seems to me.. Wishing you Peace at this time.

As a man who have been studying both hinduism and also buddhism to some extent, I recently came across the works of the christian mystics. After reading the sermon on the mount I am baffled as to why the majority of christians focuses on litteral interpretations of passages and dogma instead of practicing the main foundation of the whole movement of christianity which is so clearly expressed in the sermon on the mount. If you Wish to Pray enter your inner room. In Other words go inside and pray to your father who is in secret. And what is secret? Something secret what sign do we use? We put our finger infront of our mouth and keep quiet, so silence in other words is the secret, and the father who sees in secret Will reward you. So profound, just keep quiet be with god in quietude and what blessings follows.. my life has changed. As a hindu saint Ramana Maharshi expressed it the whole of the vedanta branch of hindu litterature can be summed up by the two statements from the bible. I am that I am, and Be still and know that I am god.
I hope in a 1000 years christianity Will have evolved so that it may reflect in its followers the true message of christ which is Silence and letting the love which moves out of that silence move and motivate our actions in this world.
      Amen

Suzanne -- How important is it --the word "Lent"? Listen to the Video Talk again... because that is what is really important! Let go and surrender to God. In that surrender we receive the graces of peace, calm, forgiveness, tolerance, acceptance and we give God permission to love us "as we are" and to transform us into His likeness. We therefore become channels of Love to others.
