      Thanks, yeah we land at the bottom of the ridge, yes with sometimes strong tailwind and uphill, all correct. As there are other ridges upwind on final you have to be prepared for significant turbulence. Sounds difficult but who said flying is easy.

    Something special about that. Almost spiritual. I used to watch gliders take off from Priddy in the Mendip hills Somerset on summer evenings and that had a similar feel about it as they headed into the setting sun high up in the hills. Gliders seem very at one with nature. not to fast. Quiet and relaxing just like nature.. they are beautiful.

      Yep, there is something in gliding that you will never experience in powered airplane. We are able here after take off in this way, fly along the ridge for whole day and in some cases even join wave and reach very high altitudes, all without need of energy from other sources, just wind mountain sophisticated ship and pilot who understands the air. Imagine level of satisfaction doing so. An example you can find here. www.weglide.org/flight/347864

    Gravity, it works every time! I've been flying various small powered planes for 30 + years out of a 400' long strip, at close to 6,000' elevation, but with 14 degree slope, which helps so much both taking off and landing of course. that was a beautifully shot video, with the camera tracking the soaring bird's takeoff, I felt like I was onboard, old hang glider pilot here.

    • @q.e.d.9112
      @q.e.d.9112 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here in New Zealand there are impressively steep grass strips all over the place. They are used by topdressing planes who can land short, turn 180° as they stop, take on a ton of fertiliser, and have gravity help them build up airspeed, when taking off with a full load.

    • @portnuefflyer
      @portnuefflyer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@q.e.d.9112 Landing up and taking off down, is such a help on my home strip, whenever I find myself at a airport, I begrudge the level ground! Another advantage is, I don't wait for the Rotax 912 I fly to reach the suggested 120 degrees before takeoff, as I don't use anything near full power on takeoff, 1700 RPM at the prop. I also have the advantage of, after lifting off, not needing to climb, as the terrain continues to drop for 1200' vertical, so I usually just transition into level flight or a slight descent while the motor warms further,.

    • @someguydino6770
      @someguydino6770 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry; it's NOT gravity that is providing the airspeed that allows the glider to take off of a slope.
      I too used to think this. Look up; wing lift vector.
      the interaction of the lift vector on the angle of the slope literally pulls the wing forward and imparts airspeed; which approximately doubles every second.

    • @q.e.d.9112
      @q.e.d.9112 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@someguydino6770
      Sorry, Dino, but your answer, while it contains some truth, really isn’t the whole story.
      Once in ground effect on a slope, the wing lift vector may assist gravity to accelerate the plane, but it ONLY works if the ground is sloping downwards and the aircraft is, likewise, in a shallow dive. The prime driver is gravitational potential energy: any increased acceleration due to the ground effect is due primarily to the increased L/D ratio that ground effect gives, AND (here’s your bit) that a plane with its nose down is generating lift that has forward component equal to L.Sinθ, where θ is the angle below horizontal of the slope. But, equally, a plane flying down a slope has a forward component to its weight vector, too. This is equal to W.Sinθ.
      It’s still gravity doing the actual work, changing PE into KE.
      Compared to a non-flying vehicle rolling under the influence of gravity down a slope, a glider in ground effect will indeed start to accelerate at something close to double the rate of the wheeled vehicle. And yes the forward tilt of that wing lift is providing half of that acceleration. But it’s the slope of the strip that enables that forward lift, and it’s gravity that’s doing the work.
      PS. The airspeed doesn’t double every second but the acceleration may be approximately double that of a wheeled gravity vehicle on the same slope.

    • @portnuefflyer
      @portnuefflyer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@someguydino6770 Well it is sure as heck gravity that helps the plane get rolling easier and faster, which results in the needed airspeed over the wing for liftoff, sooner. Sooner as in length used and time. I do know a steep slope on takeoff works every time, like I said! I doubt there are many pilots flying anything anywhere, that have as many ops off slopes over the last 40 years as I do. That's not bragging, it's just the fact of where I live and where and how I fly. I would think the wing lift vector thing works in conjunction with gravity, how's that?!

    I used to think that roll launching a glider from a slope was 'magic" not understanding where the airspeed came from?
    There's no way that the glider could attain sufficient airspeed via rolling forward powered by gravity alone.
    A pilot friend explained to me that lift vector is 90 degrees to the wing; therefore when a wing is launched on an angled slope it is pulled forward by the wing itself which imparts the necessary airspeed.
    Also note that the windsock shown starting at 0:50 is standing straight out is indicating a moderate headwind which lowers the gliders stall speed.
    Too bad that the poster didn't also include the launch in real time; then everyone would clearly see the airspeed doubling each second as if by magic!

      We use gravity take off for two reasons. Reason first as mentioned by you when wind is there we can fly along that ridge high enough to connect sometimes with wave and reach very high altitudes. Second reason hangar is on top of the hill but in summer we use winch to take off but winch is on top of the hill and you take off from bottom into the hill, so the glider must be down so when there is no wind we push gliders downhill as transport flight in this case you go down but you have enough height to make a one turn pattern and land in the bottom of that hill.

      Hi, sorry for late reply, there is aborting take off procedure. When during launch pilot is not maintaining stick in the center wing can touch the ground it happens sometimes in most cases you are able to bring them back horizontal, in case not you have to use full rudder in the same direction and brakes. The glider will turn and should stop 90 deg to takeoff strip. There is enough space to the left, to the right less, before trees there are some bushes that will stop you.

      Hi, there are others clips in normal speed. We are landing underneath this hill, still uphill landing but much longer and not so steep as on the launch strip.

      AOS Bezmiechowa is a special place with hangar and buildings on top of the ridge, that's why we use this type of take-off to fly. Nope it's far from German border it's only 40km to UA border, south east corner of Poland, come to see and you will learn more about this place and it's history.

      Thank you very much for your kind informations. Everything looks fine and elegant there. Really nice. I own a GLASFLÜGEL 401 „Kestrel“ since 40 years and maybe in 2024 I will visit your airfield. @@ougieproduction3494

      You are welcome. In general gravity take-offs are easy, experienced instructor staff there will provide required training including unexpected situations so you can get additional endorsement. Be prepared that we are landing on the bottom of the hill and you need to go up with your glider, for some it is hard for others it is nice to walk uphill! Regarding gliders to do it, just check this video from last Sunday, last one is Glasflügel Mosquito!

      @@ougieproduction3494and simetimes we use rubber ropes, and shoot glider like from slingshot. Is it still in use ? I remember it from 2006

    • @ougieproduction3494
      @ougieproduction3494  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kubamiszczz yes rubber ropes are still in use but for demonstration purpose only, you need much more people to launch glider, unfortunately gliding is less and less popular so in gravity take-off 2 people are enough one to hold wing second to push. Old gliders use to have skids instead of wheels so bungee launch was required.

    Here a view from above the airfield: th-cam.com/video/lbRAqPxd49E/w-d-xo.html
    As an old gliderpilot I really love how you do it. And it seems there is also a big standard motorwinch on the hill which can be operated directely or via a pulley. Or do you just tow the planes up the hill with it at walking speed? Assume both.
    Ah, here we see more options. Even towing to the slope or rubber rope.

      Thanks, yes we do use winch take-off there too, usually in the summer, what is funny and special here is that winch is on top of the hill (exactly in the same place close to this small building with red roof) and you take-off into the hill and land after it uphill. So winch is higher than glider! We can use only one direction to take-off and land is north so when there is south wind we can't use winch to launch due to the tailwind but we have to take it into account when we land after ridge soaring because we do it with strong tailwind. Ridge is E-W direction so south winds are perpendicular to it.
