Bluefin Tuna Fishing THREE MILES FROM SHORE! - Fishing Oceanside Harbor in San Diego

  • I got a call that bluefin tuna were VERY close to Oceanside harbor last week, and was able to get out there and cast surface jigs at boiling tuna. I was able to hook two, but unfortunately today was not my lucky day and I ended up pulling the hook on both fish close to the boat. A very awesome but also frustrating day on the water. At least my gas bill was small! The fish were only 3 to 5 miles from shore, never seen anything like that!

    Amazing. So many years of a tuna desert between the harbor and the banks (43/181/182 etc) and now this.

    that BF kicked butt!
    Using straight braid? I always use a mono top-shot, for the close to the boat cushion...success is the result of all the little details done correctly.

    • @SDKook
      @SDKook  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yep.. the frustrating part is that I NEVER use straight braid. I always put 100ft or so of top shot. I just haven't had a chance to swap out some braid since I won it in a raffle a couple weeks back.

    • @SDKook
      @SDKook  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Love having some cushion of mono especially when the fight comes close to the surface. Also, you can tell how much heat you're putting on the fish from the "piano string" sounds :)

    You need to size up so you can crank them in fast!
    You were under gunned for anything over 45-50 pounds.
    My experience with medium to larger tuna is to keep the boat moving forward at idle speed. this prevents the fish from turning their head and planes them up to the surface. Maintains constant tension on the line reducing the fight time to 10-15 minutes. Give it a try next time!

      Thanks! I am kind of all over the place with my gear. Testing all the brands figuring out what my next set will be. For you I'd highly recommend going with a Penn Fathom 25. Great all around reel that outperforms reels much more expensive. I also really like the 25 to 60lb Phenix axis rod. More expensive, but built very well for the price and a great rod that you'll have for a long time. Hope that helps!

    You make me sick.
    Heading out at the crack of noon to frothy boilers.
    Why we'd head out at midnight to be on the spot at daybreak and still get a boat ride.
    Thirty years ago I did hook up a Big Eye on the half day cattle boat.
    Had it to the gaff and my brother getting spooled on light tackle cut me off.
    Just like your fish. Right at the gaff and the deckhand said he needs Two gaffs for the trolling fish.
    I heard my brother coming down the rail and I could have free spooled so both lines ran together but I was tired. So tired. So I kept the fish at color and waited for a gaff that never came.
    My bros line touched mine and cut it like a band saw.
    The fish was on the surface exhausted with my trolling lure right there. I could have dived in and grabbed it.
    But I didn't. It looked up at me with it's Big Eye as if to say WOW that was close. Then it flicked it's tail and was gone.
    I was spent. Hands shaking I tied on something while actually wondering if I could survive another hook up.
    Hunny pounders like depth charges going off on the surface. Old guys fighting over lively bait. Nothing but the sound of twenty drags screaming and lines exploding Pow! Pow! Yelling, grunting, cursing.
    Little kid with the Zebco crying in fear.
    After all the mayhem was over there's one old guy still hooked up on the bow.
    Undergunned on big spinning tackle.
    It went for a long time until half the people wanted to cut his line.
    Frayed shredded monofilament was coming off the top guide.
    They should have chased it with the boat but they didn't and he didn't have the backbone in the rod to drag a hundred pounds.
    So it finally got away.
    No Big Eye were landed.
    It was glorious! Epic!
    Maybe better than the day I got my Marlin. Maybe.
    You can always pay big money for big fish but monsters near home are special.
    Thanks for bringing back those memories and I am half glad that fish got away.

    You can go heavier than 30# when fishing jigs, its a reaction bite. They dont care about heavy line the fish is reacting to the lure. Sorry you lost him , you will get it next time.

    • @SDKook
      @SDKook  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I spoiled it with 40 mono top shot. I'll probably keep it as a jig stick/ bait stick. The rod is fairly light 20 to 40.
