  • Control your dog with one hand using my LEASH LOCK. Super easy to use and it will give you the best control over your dog no matter what kind of leash you are using. It's non-aversive to the dog and makes your life so much simpler. It's an awesome tool that I've been teaching for years... It works with any breed, and size dog!
I think you'll LOVE THIS and your dog will too.

That's a genius ideal. I know most people wrap the lead around their hand to try and control the dog with one hand but can't make a quick release when needed as you demonstrated. Respectfully i'm going to call your method the RC or Cabral technique. I know the majority of people on this site that have been following you will agree. Good going.

Seriously useful.. I always used to wrap the leash a few times to shorten the leash. This would cause the blood flow to be blocked to my hand after few minutes of walking. Robert, you cover topics that nobody talks about but extremely useful. Just like "how to pick poop" video. Thank you Robert. You are an inspiration to me

This is so so great! I'm a dog walker. Walked 3 dogs today and used this to lock two leashes in one hand and one in the other. I was still able to give individual correction to one dog on the two leash side. So simple and comfortable and SO effective. THANK YOU!!

Great hint Robert. That'll really come in handy for crowd walking.
How about turning a lead/leash into a harness when the dog is too keyed in on something and keeps pulling and you need to provide immediate control

    • @XXLNative

A harness will make a dog want to pull. You notice nearly all these dog trainers don't use harnesses.

Been using this for the past 3 days, it's really great. The best thing is, when I keep him on a really short lock, he doesn't really pull, as opposed to before holding it short, he knew it would slip over time or I'd tire of gripping and he'd pull really hard. So it's improved his behaviour too. Thanks for the tip!

    This is great!
Whenever I get my new 'Best Friend', this lead hold will become my mainstay.
Dixie used to take me 'Tracking' on a 33' lead and I placed the End Loop over my Right Hand Thumb with the line running down my palm while clasping it with my fingers.
This resulted in a very secure hold which could still be released quicky when needed.
That methode left my right hand fingers available to help retrieve any slack to be loosely looped in my left hand.
I would also loop the lead once over my thumb at any point along the lead and grasp the two lengths with my fingers.
The Robert Methode is superior because of the ultra fast release and you still have control of the lead with the other hand after a release.
    Brilliant!
When added lead security is needed, one could loop Robert's loop over the thumb combining both methodes.
Notice in K9 Tracking/Chase vids the handler often trails the lead's free end behind and on the ground as the K9 pulls him/her along.
If we place the loop of the Robert Methode hold over our thumb, it wont release if the lead's free end gets caught on some item (Branches/Bicycle/Lawn Sprinkler/etc) or stepped on by Following Backup.
One may loose one's thumb using the Modified Robert Methode hold, but not the K9! HaHa
Robert, I always click on your vids as soon as I see one while scanning my YT list. I'm also going through your Play List, as time permits, because your knowledge and advice are priceless and indedepenceable.
I lost Dixie a year ago after 9 years at age 14 to lung cancer and am now searching for a senior GSD/GSD-MIx to Rescue/Adopt.
I have confidence that your vids will be an important asset in that new relationship.
Your vid production quality and presentation is great and your info is outstanding!
BTW: "God's greatest gift to mankind is the dog".
    Regards
    Russ in NH

Very nice, simple and works well! I have been using the thumb lock for years, but it leaves a long end dangling when tethered close, so I started using a hitch called the scaffold hitch; yours is much simpler and easier, plus i like that I can make the loop bigger to take up the slack from the bitter end. Genius!

Love it! FYI, knots have names. I think this could be a variation on a slipped half-hitch but I'm not sure. You should submit this and get it named after you to get credit if indeed it's a 'knot'. It's actually not a knot as it's a hitch but still you should get credit. FYI, the Ashley Book of Knots is considered the 'knot bible' after it's creator, Clifford Ashley. This looks incredibly useful and easy. I've been using a flat web leash and have two overhand knots in it. The knot closest to the dog (I have GSD's) is when I want her on heel (always when crossing a street or passing someone on a sidewalk). I use the second knot for 'walkies', her signal that she's free to walk behind or check out smells, etc. I keep it short enough that she knows she can't cross in front of me as that would trip me. Works pretty well, but I like this better! Cheers!

This leash thing seems dumb but I have learned this lesson the hard way. My Rottweiler was an amazing walker and our communication was second to none. Until prey drive kicked in one day, SQUIRREL..... And now my finger points in the wrong direction permanently. 2 metal pins for 3 months because I didn't hold the leash correctly.

I have very low vision, and am having trouble seeing exactly
what you are doing. Can you please describe the leash lock in words as the
pictures are of little value to me? I walk my dog with a support cane in one
hand, so this leash lock might be a useful thing to know. I live alone so there
is no one here to give me a description.
I really enjoy your videos, I have learned a lot from them. Thanks

    • @TheShark3721
      @TheShark3721 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi so best way to describe this in words... Try first with out u your dog on the leash... Take your leash and fold it in half... Now hold below the loop u have made in the leash as so you are laying that part in your hand... Now with the leash end that is connected to the dog using ur other hand not moving where your leash is in the original hand bring that part of the leash up and over the loop you have made and bring that part of the leash back down in between your middles fingers... So it kind of wraps around your hand but is over the loop... If u can figure that out and practice and let me know if I need to explain it any better just let me know...
So when this tightens the loop above motion and lead in your hand is preventing the stress pulling as that part of the lead connected to the dog is then over the loop you already have in your hand... Best of luck and hope this helps
      Dani x

it's a good idea, but on day 1 of training, a local pro showed me in 1991 to keep the loop of a leash over my right thumb and control a dog with the left hand with the leash line looped over the left thumb and gripped securely. So if a dog yanks free of the left hand, it cannot pull the leash through the thumb of the right hand. And I never heard of a dog pulling loose from a correctly fitted Herm Sprenger prong collar against the left hand that guides him.

We disagree here, Robert. I like the thumb lock better. You probably know it.
    -
I always teach the thumb lock as it even works very well for women with thiny hands.
But also for men with big hands it is much better as it better suites the anatomy of the hand.
Please reconsider, Robert, and especially have in mind these women with thiny, fragile hands.
    -
A forcefull leashpull is only for emergency or high arousal situations; just a safety measure.
Ofcourse it is much better to prevent these situations as much as possible.
    -
Remenber people: a leash is not for pulling but for communicating with your dog.
Even with the biggest dogs like the BoerBoel I train I use thiny slip leashes in a thumb lock very effectively. This is much better than a huge thick leash.
    -
    And more important:
With learning your dog to walk on a leash your aim should always be to eventually use no leash at all. A dog should be able to walk beside you unleashed. This is called "off leash traing".
