Channel Islands #4
#4 has more rocker than a Weirdo Ripper, Neck beard, new flyer and out of all four concept boards that Dane had last year, #4 was Danes favorite because it had more rocker than the other three concept boards. That's why this board came to market instead of #1 or #2 or #3 - all of which had less rocker than #4.
You may find it Interesting that Dane Reynolds choose the most rocketed out board of the four of them given that the goal initially was a groveler for really small waves.
Too me this means the outline, bottom concaves and volume distribution of #4 do well for planing in small surf and allow us to add extreme rocker where we'd normally have to use flat rocker for planing purposes.
Nothing on the rail bumps on #4 screams release and pivot. They're placed far back and they don't 'have right angles and they don't seem like they're trying to make #4 release a ton of water off the bottom of the board. CI says they're there to increase #4's drive. We can make sense of that in a few different ways as discussed above.

Thank you Channel Islands for giving me these boards for free. All opinions are my own.
All your episodes are really informative and entertaining. Thanks for your hard work :)
Thank you so much chris! Watched your episode on the number four before going to california and bought it thanks to your tips, and it was simply amazing, best board i ever had! keep doing your stuff, cheers from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
i just ordered this board in the utility dimensions, CAN'T WAIT TO RIDE IT!
Great review! Watched several of your videos. Finally honed in on the #4. Picked one up today. Going out tomorrow morning to ride my favorite beach break on the #4. Thanks for the help. Keep the vids coming.
How do you like your 4? Which type, the utility or the plus size dimensions?
Thanks for checking back. I never surfed it. It fell off my car and smashed the tail. I took it to the repair shop today. Won't get it back for a week. I am really bummed dude!
socalpipedude no comment
Sorry, forgot to mention. I picked up a 5'11" utility. Set it up with FCS UL-7 thruster config.
socalpipedude Cool, that's the same size and model I had been considering for the 4.
I'll pay you to try it for a couple waves, I'm in Point Loma. Btw, I've got a 6'2"DFR, and 6'2"Curren shape, both 19 1/4" and 19 3/16" respectively, though I'm waiting for some head high plus to ride those, haven't ridden them yet, and I'm 6'4".
that was excellent! I was just down in SB and chatted with a Channel Islands employee and he mentioned the 4 to me. Sounds like this is my board and oh if i could just pull the trigger on both the utility and the groveler! thanks for all the great info here
I forget if I posted this already, but some Stretch reviews would be awesome. Lot's to look explore with his use of concaves for the Buzz series boards. I just picked up a Buzzsaw, 5'9"x19x2 3/8 (I'm 5'7 175) and it felt like magic on my first ride.
Thanks for all the reviews, the show shreds!
Hi Chris. Weird running into you today in RB. Especially since I just watched your weirdo ripper video this morning. I purchased the #4 from Surf & Ride in Solana Beach based on your recommendation. It's everything you said it was. One of my favorite boards! The weirdo ripper is next on my list. I'll be sure to mention you and your videos when I pull the trigger. Keep the vids coming man. I usually buy boards you review. Next best thing to actually logging water time on one.
@socalpipedude good meeting and hanging! I'll look for you at Starbucks from now on.
Love your clips!! Little engineering lesson, wave lesson, design lesson, and not at all boring. Just got a #4 Groveler, will be trying it out immediately - thanks to this clip and a whack of other intel, but this clip definitely assisted the most (as do all your other clips on all the other boards...). Killer show - keep shredding!! >.
+Mo P. Gracias! come back and let us know how you like the board will you?
I'm 6'2 185 intermediate/advanced surfer. Ordered the 6'0 groveler dims 4 and it's absolutely Magic. Best short board I've ever ridden Riding the ando futures set up and it's Magic. Buy one
I have the 4 utility my favourite board. Just for the record goes great in the Barrel !
Nice review. Thinking of trying one of these or the Lost v2 stub on the Great Lakes.
Can you do a review on the Al Merrick Girrabit. Your reviews are awesome. Easily the most informative out there.
Hilarious intro...great shows...keep em coming
Nice Job...Chriso
Hi, huge fan of the show just thought id add input to the #4 groveler having purchased one myself about 2 months ago. I pretty much use it as a one board quiver as it performs pretty good in waist to overhead surf and obviously smaller. I describe myself as an beginner to intermediate surfer and strongly suggest it to those who refer to themself as similair ability. Firewire have an awesome volume calculator to best show what size board would work best for you.
Thanks for your thoughts on #4!
Very funny intro Chris! Informative specs as always. When are you going to do a demo while riding one of these sticks? Wear either funky colored boardshorts or them shorter styles from the 80's, give the girls some eye candy.
DEAR SIR - would you please be so kind as to dedicate an episode of your erudite analysis, thought provoking commentary and soft caressing of Retro Fish Surfboards and their unique idiosyncrasies.
Much obliged.
I was looking for ideas to decide on my new 'ideal' board and, thanks to you now I want 6 different boards hahaha. I don't know how I never saw your vids before, learned a lot, became a fan...so I wonder if you could give me advice on what would be the best choice, the most versitile shape for south Brazil beach breaks, 1ft to 6ft shitty, bumped to good, clean, glassy...basically all conditions, you know, a board that that works when the waves don't help much...Would the #4 Dane's board be the 'one'? Thanks for all the tips...you're the man!!
This was my favorite SoCal daily driver. Airlines broke it, I was so bummed.
Will you guys please do the Sharpeye Game Changer!
would you be able todo a board called the torq mod fish its a good board and behaves really nicely
Hi Chris, great show! Im trying to decide between a #4 utility, Dagger or The Toy from Super. What would you suggest for a slow costa rica beach break that only gets hollow a couple of times a year?
Dude! PLEASE! Make a review of the CI Proton step up!
SurfboardShredShow nice review man!
I'm 5'11-6'0 x 180lbs, intermediate surfer. Comparing the #4 with the Neck Beard in terms of grovellers i've some questions about:
- best volume of both for my size in order to get a decent paddle power and manouvrability like small airs in smallest surf.
- which one do you suggest from 1 to 2 mt?
- do you believe tha the lost v3 Rocket replace the #4?
Hey Chris, Great vid!
I am looking into possibly purchasing the Groveler #4 and wanted to get an experts opinion on it for the breaks I ride most often. I live in New England and surf the cape and NH as much as possible. When the swell is up (above waist/chest range) I ride the Al Merrick Flyer (6'0"x19x28/3). Anything smaller then that and I usually mess around on a longer board.
I'd say I'm intermediate to advance skill level and I'm looking for a board that will get me into the small mushy stuff and still have some snap. Based on every thing I read the Groveler seems like a good fit. I am about 5'10" 175lbs. Do you have any suggestions for the dimensions and volume I should get into with this board?
Any other isight would be great as well.
Thanks
JM
Hi Chris,Awesome analysis! just found site and in market to move down the line.I am intermediate surfing on and off for 35 years, back into it 3-4 times a week now.5'9,165 surf Malibu and Leo, more pt. breaks for me.Have a super fun 6'8, 17 nose, 22 middle, 16.5 wide tail and looking to move down shorter perfomance for tighter arc turns as more pocket surfer and want to get better w/ sprays off top which currently not able to pull off as board more bulking but fun and a lot of volume-probably in high 30's to low 40's.which board would u recommend for all around surfing: CI pod mod,#4, and Lost RV?and best suited volume? Thanks!
these are awesome shows, one question on the 4, so the groveler has a lot of features that promote drive, i get that, but what offsets that aspect of the board? Is it the vee? the nose rocker? or is it just drivey, and because dane is dane, he likes it?
You should do the ci average joe once it comes out!
Great episode, please do one with the Gravy by rob and channel? thanks!
How about the Roberts White Diamond 2 or Black Punt?
can you review the fred stubble?
yo buddy,i need some suggestion..which suits better the new flyer or the number 4? im comtemplating which to buy...My homebreak are mostly mushy and not more than 4-feet. need a board with speed and easy wave catching.thanks for the review tho!!
maybe 'ecoboard option' opinion too?
For this board what trailer fins do I need if I only have a thruster set of clay marzo future fins?
What would be the best board for HB year round? The #4, dumpster diver, neck beard, weirdo ripper, or new flyer? I want something that is the most versatile that can work on small 1 ft mushy days or when it gets fair to good steeper hollower waves. Thanks
Of the boards you mention it's a toss up between New Flyer and Weirdo Ripper. My preference is Ripper. #4 groveler would go nuts on mush days, but not much versatility on the high end.
Hi compadre....is there any printed mark bettween this two versions?? i saw the #4 @ bottom printed black or red on some boards but I can say wich version are.. keep the good work bro'' !!
Yeah, that episode's uploading now. Give it a few hours.
how would you say that this board rides in santa cruz on an average day? I am looking for more of a one board quiver any suggestions? I am 5'8" 150lbs. thanks for your time!
Are these 4´s continous rocker? If yes, how can they that good on mush fat 2-4 feets days? Bt the way, the 2 versions have the same rocker? Congratulations for the show. Thx in advance.
any comments about the #4 rails?
I want to buy an Al merrick short board, it will be my first short board and I surf in Cornwall, England. I'm 6ft and 175 lbs. what board would you Suggest?
CI motorboat too? Or alternatively Lost Lay z boy? Any chance?
Any chance of a stretch super buzz review?
Yes. Are you in Spain?
Review the Lost Sub Driver?
Wow so much good information, and a very well put together vid! Awesome job Chris. Now how does the #4 compare to the dumpster diver? A little less rocker?
Review The Lost Sub Scorcher!
I'm 14 looking for a new board and found this board for such a great deal $300 off it I have a 5'10 but was tempted by this one except its a 5'8... would I still be able to ride this and do snaps even though it is a bugger board... anyone else rode it?
If i get a #4 i am 5'8 and what size should i get??
Damn, talk about explanation,.. that's pretty thorough.
And funny, it's done in youtube character presentation.
I have those same fins
