I'm 6'2. 185 lbs. intermediate/advanced surfer. Bought the 5'5 timber tech. Absolutely magic board. Highly recommend. Ride it as a quad only. I tried a lot of different fin set ups and found the best was Simon Anderson large fins and ea blackstix 3.0 quad rear trailers. Need the bigger Simon Anderson fins for more drive with a foiled out rear smaller trailer. Magic fin set up. Magic board. Best small wave board I've ridden. Can handle bigger stuff much better than sweet potato and way way easier to turn. I have a 5'9 carbon wrap lost puddle jumper and the baked potato gets ridden a lot more. Buy one. Go short. 5'5 made me super nervous but after riding I think the size is perfect. Magic Magic board.
Hey hey! You guys are raiding my quiver ;-) I have a 5'3" TimberTek Baked Potato, and ride it consistently with the Controllers, matter of fact. The first session I took it out in I was a little underwhelmed by the fin set up. For some magic reason, a nubster came with my Controllers - I then popped that in and paddled out. Same waves / same session. What a difference! For me, it was a sweet revelation. I would never claim to be able to tell the difference that lil' nubster would make, but sure enough it does. Personal dims: 5'10" 153 lbs.
Great review...I've had my 6'3" Baked Potato for about 3 years...I was a bit sketchy at first, but now it's a great reliable board in all conditions..i don't leave home without it...!
First off, thank you shred show for all the killer reviews. They helped me alot in my new purchase. I just bought a 5'1 timber tech tater and love it. I'm 5'9 and 170lbs. I was a little nervous about the length, but the thing rips. I skimmed before I learned to surf, and have bad heavy front foot habits, but this board at this length suits narrow stanced looks like myself and proper surfers as well. If anyone's scared to go small, don't be. I ran it as a quad with medium JJFs up front and stretch quad trailers. hope this helps someone
Hey Andrew, are your hpsb the same volume as your BP? I am wondering if I should add more foam or keep the same when buying a BP - or a groveler in general. I was thinking that the change in design should mean that I keep the boards at the same volume. I'm 5'10, 165lbs, intermediate advanced, never had an interest in grovelers and I wanna give them a shot.
I have had a 5'7 Timbertek Baked potato with Stamps Quad fins. Changed my surfing. I'm around 100kgs and it floats me really easily. I surf it in flatter waves up to 4ft but it goes too fast in steep waves and its hard to dump speed. After getting this board, I started surfing every day because it makes mush surf fun. My problem is I surf this board too much and the rest of my quiver is stagnating.
Bro! Great vid and great editing! I just learned more about boards and fins in this 13min vid than I have in years of reading and talking shop in the water. You have a great way of breaking it all down. Thanks!
Excellent, pragmatic and useful review. My buddy and I are on a surf trip in Maui and just looked at this board at Hi-tech. He really liked it and may buy it for the coming south swell. This is exactly the kind of info he needs to make a decision. Thanks! Also, you reviewed the fin set he already has with, Controllers. Bonus!
Same colour as a spud I pulled out of the garden the other day,,haha..One of my closest friends really likes this board and wishes he had never sold his one. I am about to buy a timbertek soon...Sub Moon, as I have a sore neck and need some extra length for a while, but still want to turn the thing! Great show and big fan Marty Ware (Australian Micro Farmer)
had a try of the 5 11 potatoe at Cronulla in sept 13. easy to ride fast and easy to paddle . i've been riding mals since 1976 (when they were zero cost but bloody heavy) and sick of them now so been trying out the fish. i also have been riding my mini mal 10 yrs old now and not really a mal just a big thruster at 7 foot.the firewall ripped. thanks to the guys at the cronulla (Australia) surf comp for giving me a go on one. also the surf was shitouse. and i weigh 11 1/2 stone or 74.5 kgs
Baked Potato with Controllers is my daily setup! I'm 6'1" ~200# and I surf the 6'1" BP. Usual surf is anywhere from 2-6 foot faces (2-3 ft Hwn). Board is FAST down the line, easy for me to maneuver (I've come from long boarding), and I always catch my share+ of waves. As long as there is some face to the wave this board shreds! You do a good job showing the concave when it is deep! (when it is smaller concave it is sometimes very difficult to see in the video) Great links and notations including the show time/outline.
+Giorgio Falivene - I find that it paddles well. It's wide and thick like a longboard. It won't lift you out of the water like a longboard. Paddling out is fine; you will need to be in the right spot to catch the wave. At that point it glides well, but more like a flat shortboard, not the long glide of a longboard. Then magic once you catch the wave!!! Whoo hoo!
Great review Chris, glad to hear tech on the fins too. My Baked Potato (rapidfire) is my favorite board to date. I'm 6'2" 180lbs on a 5'7", it's plenty big. I ride controllers for 'control' in bigger surf to head-high and to pump hard down the line for speed. Many days I like AM2 fronts w controller rears to loosen it up and really play on the face. Tried AMT fronts and it didn't click immediately for me but I know some folks like it. Still need to try thruster or a nub setup... Magic board!!!
i am 6'1 180lbs and have the 5'7 Baked Potato in Rapidfire. Really fun board, paddles great, i have it set up as a 4 fin with a trailer nub. A couple of way better surfers than me ride it around here, east coast punchy beach breaks, and they love it because paddles so well. the only knock i would have is that i tend to bury the nose on take offs on hollower waves, low tide conditions. I think if you are surfing mushy waves it is perfect. Not sure how it would handle a lot of speed but definitely a nice addition to the quiver, BTw the Firewire volume calculator is right on for the this board.
Hey Chris, would you mind sharing your weight with us so that those of us still determining our volume range can gather a bit more info for what you're riding? Thanks for the videos man! Highlight of my weeks!
For all those people who are combing the internet for should I size up or size down decisions. I am around 145-150lbs 5'11", and I got a 5'1" and have been using it in weak beach break stuff around the San Francisco Bay Area. -It is somewhere between a small wave shortboard and a funboard killer in the 5'1" in terms of paddle-ablity. -I honestly wanted it to be more of a funboard killer and think the 5'3" would have been closer to that. -Still loads of fun and I can sit deeper than people on the small wave shortboards, so I'm still getting more waves because of the board. Running the FCSII MB Split Keel fins right now which are great, just like the Futures Controllers. If you are trying to cobble together a non FCSII "controllers" set (and don't want to buy the RFC "copies") I'm going to try putting AM fronts with the FCS H3 rears to see how that feels since the H3 quad rears have the exact same outline as the split keel rears.
Surfed it more on the AM fronts and h3/ FCS split keel rears and I'm loving it. Little looser than the split keels, which I really like, but still has that nice drive/ projection you get out of the spilt keels.
Interested in the mystery that is Lib Tech Waterboard specifically the Bowl series. A West LA shop had the Bowls model surfboard, looks promising cuz I'm beating the crap out of my boards.
Hell yeah! Love it that you are reviewing a non high performance shortboard and an alternative shape and technology. And you review Controller fins too? Dude, awesome. Btw, the review itself is great.
Hey bud, great knowledge and hosting abilities. Got a 6'4'' potatonator/tatornator on order for a stocky 95kg frame. hoping you could give me your take on the board as an everyday mush to head heighters
Any plans to review "The Buzz" by Stretch surfboards? What breaks do you frequent to test the boards? Keep up the good show. Can you talk about upcoming board demos and demo programs like that of Firewire.
aloha, bruh....love your videos...however, most surf shows do not speak about the type of wave that people ride....this is super important kine, ya? Boards like this, on the south shore of hawaii (Oahu), are super sick....from small and grovel to overhead, barrels at Ala Moana....just my thought...Aloha
Love the show, very helpful. Oddly enoughI'm actually learning how to surf my boards differently based on your feedback. I feel like your feedback gives me lots of things to think about and what to expect from my boards and what not to force them to do. Can you do a review of any of the single fin shortboards out there? MSF by Channel Islands or whatever? Just something I don't have, and have never really ridden. It's also different from a lot of what you have here.
Thanks for the info you do a great job explaining this board love your work. Ive been looking to get this board. I'm 6ft 180 and was thinking about getting a 5'5 what do you think?
Adam Armellino I have tried both a 5' 7" & a 5' 5" I'm 5' 10 and 180lbs. If you're an ok surfer (i'm below average) then the 5' 5" will work best for sure. I've sold my 5' 7" and now love the 5 5". I'd recommend some good fins as they transformed my board, I went with FCS Compressor Quad, I hear for Futures that the Controller works well
I gave the Controllers a shot for a few weeks but I couldn't seem to click with them. They felt stiff and tough to initiate turns. I blame my weight, at 150lbs I think I may have been a little too light for them. I've had much better success with the Shapers Fins DVS Quad Keel set. The rears are 50/50 foiled instead of the Controllers 80/20. The DVS' are killer fins.
Was wondering what u thought was a better board puddle jumper, baked potato or avg joe, I ride a sub scorcher and want a shorter board that can catch waves and yet perform well. Aloha g
Awesome reviews! I'm in the market for a baked potato just unsure of the size. I'm 5'7" and 156 lbs (70.9k) and Ive been surfing for 2 years. I'm at the higher end of the beginner skill set and I currently ride a 6'x 19.87"x 2.37" and on small days(2'-3') im able to get a few rides in but not with out a lot of work. Last weekend I rented a sweet potato in a 5'2" and my wave count went up a bit and so did the quality of my rides. My problem is choosing between a 5'3" bp or a 5'5" bp. I want something I can get better and not something that feels like a yacht . Will that 2 inches and extra volume be that different?
Love the show Chris, I have learnt more about boards in the last 2 x weeks than the last 5 years of surfing...any chance you could review the JS industries Revolution?
Great show Chris, love your work. I have a question: I have always looked at the curve running from the middle of the board to the tail as primarily effecting how tightly you can turn, particularly the last 1 ft of curve, with a nice tight curve allowing for more radical turns. Some of the boards you have been explaining however, don't seem to follow this rule. Is it incorrect? Are you able to include some explanation about this critical part of the rail in one of your shows. Thanks if you can.
yo Chris i got a question, I am going to be in California for the summer from end of May to August. For the waves during this time what is the best board? I want to make the most of my days but want a short board like shape.
Awesome Vids! Can you do one a vid examining epoxy vs standard for example. I currently destroying my PU boards and looking at ordering some C.Islands epoxys custom ( rubble, and Tlow) All the new epoxy advancements confuse the shit outta me, and it would be great to have you look at the type of construction and durability vs performance. Thanks for the great vids!!
Yo Chris. What is the best shortboard that catches small waves easily but still has good rail to rail transition and maintains lots of speed and drive in bottom turns and carves. Looking for something that performs well in 1-2 ft flat faced waves and something i would bring out on a log day. I'm thinking about the Firewire Sweet Potato. Would that board match my description?
Sweet Potato. I think you feel more flight across the surface of the water on that board than Drive, which is different to me because drive feels more like you're gripping water and ripping in to it. But in 1-2 foot flat faced waves, Sweet Potato. It's fun.
I wonder if a 5,3 wouldn't be too small for me , I'm 1,75 84 kg and I ride at moment a JS FMN 6,0 25,7 lt. And a JS monster 5,11 also with around 25,5 lt of volume, I'm finding that I'm struggling to paddle well with my boards , I'm 34 and surf maybe 3 x week , on my list also is the RNF ,is the 5,6 could be the right dimensions?? Lots of questions but , I'm confused , buying it online, need some help, drop us a line w your opinion, thanks all for your time
@shredshow my baked potato has fcs 1 fin boxes. I want to ride this board as a quad for a little more hold in cleaner waves . Can you recommend fcs 1 quad fins ? Something similar to controller ?
Hi Chris, Fantastic reviews. You'd be a great lecturer! I am a beginner/intermediate surfer wanting to get a Baked Patato. On the Firewire volume calculator my max recommended volume is 43 liters. The surf shop only has a 5'7 in stock which is 39.9 liters. The 5'9 has 43 liters. Do you think that would be okay? Also, if I want to ride this board in slightly larger/cleaner surf, would you recommend the 5'7 or 5'9? Thanks Chris! I've learned so much from your videos!
This will sound nuts, but go with the 5'5. I think the Volume calculator is useful in traditional outlines, but it doesn't account for the shape of the board that the volume it recommends is going in. The Baked puts a truck load of volume beneath your chest when paddling and feet when surfing. To give you perspective, I'm on a 5'5 and I weigh 50 lbs more than you. You may even have fun on a 5'3. Call surf shops in your area and ask if they have any demo's you can try.
SurfboardShredShow Thanks Chris, I surfed the 5'7 in 3-4 ft waves today and it was fine! Although like you said it was a little stiff with the controller quad fin set up. In sloppy surf it wasn't as easy to catch waves as I would have liked it to be. Do you think the Rasta Quad would be a good set up for a lighter person like me? Also, would a thruster set up work with a board tail so wide? Would a little Future Middle Finger center fin make any difference?
Got the Rasta Quad. This is the fin combo that worked for me today at YCW Beach, Phillip Island VIC Australia!: Rear Fins: Future Seaworthy Front Fins: Rasta Quad Worked very well for me. Kept the speed and more maneuverable. I liked this combo because perhaps the rear Rasta would have created too much drag in the Baked because it was convex on both sides. The Seaworthy was convex/flat. Does this sound right to you? Took a tip from #25. Cheers mate.
just picked up a used baked potato (rapidfire construction). it has FCS fin boxes. any suggestion on fins? anything that can stand in for the futures controllers? thanks in advance :)
Marcelo Rolo I've owned both and also a Sweet Potato, I'd say that that Chris gets this spot on in the vid. You can ride the potatonator in bigger waves than the baked, it's more towards a standard hybrid, where as the baked is more towards a groveller. If you only have one board then the potatonator will be more versatile. The potatonator and baked are amazing boards, make sure you don't go too long on the Baked as it doesn't work as well. The Potatonator you can go a little bigger without so much negative effect. Personally I didn't like the Sweet Potato and would go for a Mini Simmons style instead of one of these.
I am saying this too soon, as its not public yet, but what fun is having Shred Show if I can't break a few rules... The answer is THE CHUMLEE (do some googling in a couple weeks and you'll find it. )
Hey Chris, great video and extremely informative. I am wanting to buy one of these, but I am a little conflicted on dimensions, and I was hoping that you might be able to provide some valuable advice. I am just south of 50, and have been surfing for over 30 years, I am about 168 lbs., in pretty good surf shape, and I average about 2-3 surfs a week. The shortest board I have ever surfed is 6'. The guy in the shop reckons that I should go with a 5'3", but the online volume meter suggests a 5'5". I know you say go with the higher range of your volume, but I was wondering what your take is on how I should approach my buying decision. Thanks again Chris, and cheers.
Anybody actually own the board in Timbertek? I'm looking for a opinions about it's durability. The Firewire forum makes it look like some older boards had serious problems, but they remedied it down the line.
Chris- you are awesome, thanks for these vids! I'm really thinking of getting this board. The thing is, I am unsure of what size board and fin set up would be best for me. I'm 5'3, 135lbs, live in the UK so conditions aren't always great, mostly knee to shoulder high waves where I am. I would say I haven't quite reached the intermediate level yet. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated :D
I think a Sweet Potato would also be a good option for you. Maybe try a demo 5'2? If you want the Baked I reckon perhaps a 5'3 with Futures Stretch Quad fin setup. The Stretch Quad has a V2 foil (as does the Rasta and Controller Quads) which work well for me. Good luck man! They're great little boards!
Question: can i use a regular set of quad trailers with a set of twin fins? Like a set of 4.0 QD2 Hexcomb construction trailers, with like a set of Rasta keels, or any type of wide based keel fin...Please get back to me...Ive just been trying to do some research.
I'm 6'2. 185 lbs. intermediate/advanced surfer.
Good show by the way.
I love the Baked Potato! It's such a rad board!!
Brilliant, the most thorough and informative surfboard descriptions! Thank you bru! I have to get my hands on one of these Baked Potato badboys.

Hey Chris, would you mind sharing your weight with us so that those of us still determining our volume range can gather a bit more info for what you're riding? Thanks for the videos man! Highlight of my weeks!
Good job, keep em coming. Another vote for the vanguard for a future review.
Great video! I can see the concaves clearly in all of your vids
Micheal I surf in Montreal and the potato family goes really nicely here
i enjoy the fact that you move the board around alot :D
Excellent review .. huge amount of info to digest .. cheers man.

This channel rocks! Iv learned more about surfboards than ever. Thanks. I need a new board :/
Hi, I'm Damien from Mauritius island and wanted a review of the Magic Mushroom from Aloha surfboards and the DHD double shot. Great Show.
Love your reviews. Your infp helped me choose aa baked potato.
Thank you.
Great video! Thanks for your work and passion!
Thank you Simone!

Hell yeah! Love it that you are reviewing a non high performance shortboard and an alternative shape and technology. And you review Controller fins too? Dude, awesome.
Btw, the review itself is great.
Awsome video . It would be good if you put a little video of you or somebody trying it
Hi chris, you should review the potatonator, i feel that its the middle board between a sweet potatoe or an average joe and a standar shortboard.

Would you recommend the baked potato or the lost bean bag for a transition out of a longboard for the northwest Westport/ ocean shores area?
What do you think CI Average Joe or FireWire Baked potato? Surf mushy Texas waves mostly. Thanks
try the rusty bali squid. I have one and its awesome! Donovan Frankenrider style cutbacks all day long!
Love the show Chris, I have learnt more about boards in the last 2 x weeks than the last 5 years of surfing...any chance you could review the JS industries Revolution?
I want one so so so bad!
dann mann is the man.i have a chum lee from him.
Can you please do a review of the creeper model shaped by Rob Machado?
Great show Chris, love your work. I have a question: I have always looked at the curve running from the middle of the board to the tail as primarily effecting how tightly you can turn, particularly the last 1 ft of curve, with a nice tight curve allowing for more radical turns. Some of the boards you have been explaining however, don't seem to follow this rule. Is it incorrect? Are you able to include some explanation about this critical part of the rail in one of your shows. Thanks if you can.
yo Chris i got a question, I am going to be in California for the summer from end of May to August. For the waves during this time what is the best board? I want to make the most of my days but want a short board like shape.
hi am looking in to getting the firewire timbertek spitfire can you do a episode on that board
Please review the Firewire Potatonator!! and the new FCS
Awesome Vids! Can you do one a vid examining epoxy vs standard for example. I currently destroying my PU boards and looking at ordering some C.Islands epoxys custom ( rubble, and Tlow)
All the new epoxy advancements confuse the shit outta me, and it would be great to have you look at the type of construction and durability vs performance. Thanks for the great vids!!
Try to get your hands on some T Pattersons
How’s the flex in timbertek range?
Do you think this board would be good if I want to step up from a retro fish?
Please Review the Firwire Unibrow.
Please review the Rusty Happy Shovel
Lots of questions but , I'm confused , buying it online, need some help, drop us a line w your opinion, thanks all for your time
How about the Roberts White Diamond review? Bro
hey Shed Show, What are the nose and tail rockers on this board? it looks pretty flat.
Hey, would it be possible for you to do a review of the fcsII quad keel fins. Thanks!!!
TimberTek seems to be the most durable Firewire construction
Can you do a video on the Addvance?
Intense double concave (good angle)
@shredshow my baked potato has fcs 1 fin boxes. I want to ride this board as a quad for a little more hold in cleaner waves . Can you recommend fcs 1 quad fins ? Something similar to controller ?
Ps . Thanks !
Rusty Happy Shovel or Lib tech bowl series
Hi Chris,
Fantastic reviews.
Forgot to mention I weigh 66 kg, roughly 145 lbs. I'm 6 ft tall.
Previously all I rode were mini mals.

Thanks Chris,
I surfed the 5'7 in 3-4 ft waves today and it was fine!
This is the fin combo that worked for me today at YCW Beach, Phillip Island VIC Australia!:
Rear Fins: Future Seaworthy
Front Fins: Rasta Quad
Worked very well for me.
Just tried these on my Baked, they rule! www.surffcs.com/shop/surf-quads/fcs-compressor-quad-set
Thanks for the info! I'll give them a try :)
Does it have four or five fin boxes?
Five fin boxes
Hey,
What would be the differences between this and the potatonator?
Thank you
Marcelo Rolo I've owned both and also a Sweet Potato, I'd say that that Chris gets this spot on in the vid.
Comparing the sweat potato and the baked potato which board would be the ultimate high performance grovel board and why?
I am saying this too soon, as its not public yet, but what fun is having Shred Show if I can't break a few rules... The answer is THE CHUMLEE (do some googling in a couple weeks and you'll find it. )
Shred Show Awesome cant wait :)
do the motorboat too
How about some JS reviews?
Review the Vanguard??
How about any Campbell Bros bonzer?

Could you please do the FireWire vanguard
Hey guys i just cracked the nose of my baked potato. Does anybody know the procedure of how to repair timbertek boards?
Mervyn Tan Thanks for the help!
I wondered if the sweet potato would hold in 4 ft waves what do you think?
Lol I surfed 15ft waves with it bro and it did great! I almost lost my soul from the speed but
Um sonho :D
JS matrix please
Please review vanguard
Question: can i use a regular set of quad trailers with a set of twin fins? Like a set of 4.0 QD2 Hexcomb construction trailers, with like a set of Rasta keels, or any type of wide based keel fin...Please get back to me...Ive just been trying to do some research.
Did u try it? Did it work??
