Three-Horse Title Race & Arsenal Look Dangerous! | Fan Debate 2024

- The Fan Debate is back, sponsored by Sky Bet, with Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher alongside The Traitors star Harry Clark and some of the biggest fan channels in England.
As the Premier League season comes into its final stretch the only place to start is the title race as league leaders Liverpool host treble-winners Manchester City on Sunday. Is it pivotal for the title race and could free-scoring Arsenal potentially capitalise on Saturday evening?
4th and 5th place are still up for grabs, but who will miss out on Europe between Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur? And why are season ticket prices so high?
It’s been a disappointing season for Chelsea, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace; why has it gone so wrong for the three clubs and what can they expect from now until the end of the campaign?
Everton have had to deal with a points deduction as they battle avoid the drop, but could Luton Town define the odds and stay up in their first Premier League season?
Finally we talk about club ownership and the impact of the financial fair play’s profit and sustainability rules.
We are nearing the 1 million subscription mark so please do not forget to hit subscribe to not miss another Fan Debate or Stick to Football episode.
We’ll be back next week with a Traitors themed special… 👀

I do find it a bit depressing how much of the discussion around football comes back to money these days. It can be a bit exhausting at times
Also seems like the cycles of football have been paused by Pep.
At times ,I'm just crying out for a long pass ,or any air on the ball ,that's where most of the spontaneity comes from ,the volleys , bicycle kicks ,ball juggling ,all rare now thanks to him.
Unfortunately nowadays, if you have a very good manager and millions to spend, the league is a wrap. Only Liverpool have beaten City once Pep started winning and that was once.

Matisse making some great points about Chelsea. The recruitment strategy is an utter shambles.
The thing about Chelsea is that they look like they want to do what Arsenal did but they’re skipping steps massively. What Chelsea need to understand is that there is no shortcuts to a proper rebuild.
It will take years. Money can buy you players. But money can’t buy you a structure, long term planning and vision. That has to be developed over time and unfortunately for Chelsea, that takes time.
Stevie Wonder can see that for themselves.

Any movement on the 115+ charges against City? Seems rich (no pun intended) to be harsh on Everton and Nottingham Forest and yet not even charge City for any of the 115+ up to now. Just gives City time to brush things under the carpet, burn accounts or send brown envelopes 🤔
They have been charged already. The difference is city, as yet, haven't been found guilty of any of those 115.
Everton admitted they were guilty!
115 charges takes a long time to go through

@16ozClawHammer, thanks for the support ❤
The talk around United is always over the top. Sacking ETH would be ludicrous. Half of the players he signed aren't even available. Liverpool lost Van Dijk and finished 5th.
This is a great thing to watch. I like JC and GN together, and the opinion of the fans. It's a great show. Nice job, thank you!
Flav’s initial point was that because selling academy players is more lucrative than selling player that have been purchased it incentives clubs to play academy players. It’s a shame that academy products are tools in a profit vs loss statement but at least the current model encourages clubs to take a chance on them. COYG
TBF he has said before that it would be a bad decision for Chelsea to sell Gallagher
Flav and other fans love to throw around how much Arsenal have spent under Mikel but never mention their own clubs. Since 20/21 according to Transfermarkt Chelsea are top with €1.44B, City 2nd with €726M, Arsenal 3rd w/€674M, United 4th €671, Spurs 5th €656, Newcastle 6th €507M, Liverpool 7th €485M, West Ham 8th €460M. Villa, Wolves and Leeds are the next in line. This isn’t net but still shows Spurs aren’t far behind Arsenal in loosing their purse strings.
Apparently for Flav everything resets after a new managers comes in
What he's pointing out is that Spurs' spending is actually in line with the rules to the point where they can still spend 600 million plus without being near the ffp threshold. Arsenal have made one of the biggest losses and been one of the biggest spenders over the past 3 seasons, so they should be winning titles. I wouldn't be surprised to see them have to make some big sales over the next couple years if they don't start winning things.
@@chrismakesmusic2110 how can they spend 600 mil over their limit? Is there is source? Have they seriously cashflowed paying off the stadium so easily?
@@chrismakesmusic2110utter nonsense. Arsenal actually won a trophy under arteta and the they started to spend. Besides, the likes of Leicester and West Ham have won trophies while spurs have outspent them and finish 8th lol
Transfer fees is one thing but look at the wage bills, you will see an absolute chasm between the Spurs figures and the rest of the top 6.

The answer to selling academy players to abide by profit and sustainability rules is to require a number of academy players for the squad registration, not just homegrown in the nation but homegrown at that club. This balances the scales; clubs will be incentivised to put money into youth setup both for profit and for being apart of the 25 man squad.

Really good to see Dan on here. One of the best talking about football generally and a great rep of the Palace supporter base.
speaking on the purchase of players vs selling of academy players. I believe a better system would be forced to dissolve your largest contract/wages if you're in breach of FFP, and then a lock until you're below the FFP threshold. It would make clubs like Chelsea be very considerate of purchase of players or just lose the player and eat the cost, rather than telling an academy player they basically wont play at the club they're growing up in. it would stop single season splurging, where they have to see if an expensive player works for them. no points deduction just dissolution of players, if you risk losing your best player clubs will spend more responsibly. Also, they could force clubs to put total contract value in an escrow account up front.
My view is with all the financial constraints the PL in 10yrs will look nothing like it does now. Inflated player prices, an uneven playing field through VAR & Saudi investment is slowly killing the game. Add in commercial pressures, expensive tickets, limited availability & pressure to go to a PPV I would say enjoy the last few years of "competitive" football.
without the financial constraints you'd get more states etc buying PL clubs making it even harder for clubs from the championship and lower half of the table to compete. It would cause even more inflation to a level we've never seen ( Imagine another 4/5 PSGs and what they did to market ). The ripple effect across Europe would make it even harder for clubs in other leagues to compete financially and only embolden the want for a super league. The only place that would be able to compete with PL fees and wages would be Saudi
@@ElBarcoGaming But the inflation wasn't due to rule changes, In the space of a decade you've had an absurd increase to the amount a player is deemed "worth" by clubs like Chelsea, Man U and City bumping prices up to 100m. Think about it, if a club is only allowed to lose 105m only three years, you've spent that already on one player in hopes of trying to just be able to compete.
You think this if totally fine the way it is?
Big up Clive! A member of the best football podcast around
