  • This video is for the DIYers. In this video I show you how to replace the Cup Holder Lid on a Mercedes Benz W166/X166 model. In this video, I demonstrate the complete step by step process, so you know exactly what needs to be done to successfully carry out this repair, or perhaps a similar repair that involves the removal of the Center Console Assembly.

    Hey guys, just wanted to jump into the comment section to post a little info correction; one of the viewers brought it to my attention that the bolts that I believed to be Torx T27s are actually Torx T30s, so to avoid the possibility of rounding out your bolts, I'd advise the use of the correct size bit to carry out your repairs. Hope this helps.

    Excellent video. My car has a rear seat entertainment system which it was too hard to unplug DVD player unit form the back of the council. The replacement cupholder cover was a bit narrower than the original so it does go off track when opening. Not ideal.

      Glad you liked the video. You purchased the cup holder cover I linked in the description? The one I installed in this video fits and functions good.

      @@OneStopShopGarage I bought it from amazon. I think they all come from the same source, It is 2 mm narrower than original. It function but it go off track form the back if you look form behind the unit then it snips back. So it is not as slick at the OEM. I applied some light grease. Not ideal but it is OK.

    I hope it's the same way for the 2016 W166 with heated cupholder and Ambient Lighting. I just need to figure out how to remove the cupholder spring cup flaps

      If you decide to go through with the repair, let me know how it goes. Interior design doesn’t appear to be too different when looking at pictures, so perhaps the process is almost like that of the 2015 W166. That’s pretty neat that the 2016 models have heated cup holders; that’s some convenience right there lol.

    Excellent video -- did you have to fish out the broken section of your old roller shutter, or does it just fall out somewhere?

      Once you take out the center console assembly you’ll be able to slide the remaining piece(s) of the cup holder cover up and off the track; if any pieces managed to break off underneath, you should be able to retrieve them upon removal of the center console assembly from the vehicle. Hope this helps. Take care.

    Superb video! Do you know should I remove the whole center console in order to access the scrolling knob unit only (A1669003501)? I have single "back" button malfunctioning.

      Can’t say for sure.. I didnt pay any attention to the media selection tool when I had the center console assembly out of the car. Based on images of the replacement unit on eBay there’s mounting holes, the question is whether the screws that secure it are top mount or bottom mount. Could be as easy as just prying up on the panel to expose the mounting screws, but I think the center compartment might have to come out to gain access to remove it.. speaking based on the design of the armrests, I had done another video I never published of removing the armrest from the center compartment. The hinges for the armrests are attached to the center compartment, so it would most likely pose an issue when attempting to pry up on that trim to get it out, assuming that trim has to even be removed. Just not quite sure, not trying to lead you astray. But let me know how it goes.

      @@OneStopShopGarage Many thanks for the very detailed advice and all the additional description. I will be starting "the procedure" soon ;) Can you please share with me your other video on removing the armrest from the center compartment? Either here on YT, on FB or via WeTransfer link, any other app, etc. whatever will be most convenient for you :D You can also drop me an email too. The quality doesn't matter at all; it will be super helpful to watch that one too before I start my work!

      @@GeorgeFire-on7ek to answer your question, I believe it’s possible to do this repair without removal of the center console
      assembly. From inside the center compartment, once you remove the panel that houses the two connectors, you should be able to access this one T20 screw that secures the front section of the compartment to the center console assembly. You’ll need to undo the two top T20 screws that secure the rear AC panel in place (see my W166 Armrest latch replacement video to know what I’m talking about), you then can carefully pry back on the top of the rear AC panel to remove the two T20 screws as well as the lighting connector (careful not to drop the screws). The center compartment would then be able to be removed, and then you can pry up on the panel that houses the media selection tool. The screws that secure the media selection tool are bottom mount. There’s 4 of them, T20s. You’ll have to unplug the connector for it, so be careful because there’s a clip holding the wiring in place, so don’t just yank it straight out. Hope this helps.

    On the GLE is (2) T27 and (2) T30 that’s it the console comes out left up the console and remove (3) plugs (1 main white and (2) little blue harness plugs)) and it’s out.

    • @OneStopShopGarage
      @OneStopShopGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      So as opposed to the 2012-2015 ML W166, on GLE 2016+ W166 there’s a total of 4 screws instead of 8? I had the 2 T27s under the dash/climate control, then the 4 T20s in center compartment as well as 2 more T27s as seen in video.

    • @OneStopShopGarage
      @OneStopShopGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      You know I just realized that the screws I was stating were T27s are actually T30s 😅. Lol. The T27 bit just seemed to be a good fit. So thank you for that.

      @@OneStopShopGarage On the GLE you did not have to remove the other screws just the 2 silver one inside the armrest and the 2 in the front cubby that was it. Left up on the center console from the rear and remove the plugs and it's out. I did not even remove those black screws or took out the USB ports/panel. Once you got the console out. Then you have to remove the (2) black screws to separate the cupholder unit from the center console. I went the extra mile and took the cupholder apart to replace the cup holder spring flap. No video on that anywhere online had to figure it out without breaking anything.
      For the temp cupholder switch. You need to remove the cupholder due to the switch have clips that locks in if you pry it up with out pinching in the clips you break it it or it's not coming out from the top. For the roller blind handle. I was told that you can get a replacement from the dealership. I see this week if I can get one.

      Update: You can not get a replacement handle for the roller blind for the W166 from the dealer. Some other models yes but check with the dealer first
