Mercedes W166 DIY Interior Repair Guide | Arm Rest Latch | Media Selection Knob
I recently released a repair video for the W166, on the process to replace the armrest latch, well it turns out all the steps in the other video aren’t necessary to carry out the repair. In this video I talk about how to go about the repair process for the Center Compartment Armrest Latch as well as for the Media Selection Tool without the removal of the center console assembly from the vehicle. I hope you guys find this video helpful.

    This is an awesome video. I am now waiting for Amazon to show up with the replacement latch and spring within the next 185 minutes. What is interesting is that at 10:30 in your video you have the same area broken on your center console that I have--it is where there is the screw underneath. And it is for the driver side latch assembly down by where the base of that spring goes. It looks like an arch cutout in your video. Mine broke exactly the same. The failure overall on my center console was passenger side latch. The post where the spring is coiled around on the latch is sheared off and the spring is also MIA.

      Had customized the instrument cluster gauge faces. Oem instrument cluster came with white w/ black gauge faces, I picked up a w204 amg speedometer gauge face as well as a used W207 (E350 Coupe) instrument cluster, which came with black gauge faces for that project. Car came equipped with the amg wheels package, so decided I’d rock the amg speedometer face plate to match. Looks better than the non amg face plate too imo. And nah I didn’t throw any “amg” badge on the trunk if that’s what you’re thinking lol. Just decided to sport the amg speedometer face seeing it matches the amg instrument cluster menu as well as the amg wheels package.

    Question: By removing only the top two screws at the back of the console and pulling the A/C vent rearward far enough to unplug the blue light connector and remove the top two T-20 screws holding down the back of the storage compartment, is it overly difficult to reconnect the blue wiring connector since so little working space is available without also removing the two remaining bottom screws at the rear of the console?

    • @OneStopShopGarage
      @OneStopShopGarage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Might be challenging to accomplish with removal of just the upper two T20s as the rear panel isn’t all that flexible, but if you have something you can wedge between the panel and the assembly to give you sufficient space to undo those two lighting connector screws along with the blue connector, then perhaps it can be done.. just dont let any of those screws fall down in between that little gap. Hope this helps. Check out my other in-depth video on the step by step process if you want and/or haven’t already. Take care.

    Thanks for this video. Just did this on a 2015 ML350 and have a few tips. The big screws are T30, not T27. This can definitely be done without removing the center console. You can remove the rear panel from inside the car. Simply remove the 4 (t20) screws (shown @ 4:13) and then the 2 (t20) screws revealed at the top next to the blue connector (shown at 8:36) after removing the rear panel. You will still need to remove the 6 screws inside the center console (shown at 1:34) and the 2 connections (USB and Ipod interface connection) on the wall inside the center console. You also don't need to remove that bottom screw at the bottom of the console (mentioned at 8:57)

    • @OneStopShopGarage
      @OneStopShopGarage 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tad bit better during a 40 pull on stock tune probably because the increased intercooler core size allowing additional cooling. Never got around to tuning, but I’d imagine you’d get optimal results with a custom dyno tune after installing this and the mw hfi system. Slapping a hybrid turbo on in addition to the fmic kit & the hfi system would be a nice little combo too, just don’t know how well these motors internals would hold up with additional boost but for sure would be over 300whp.

      @@FernandoPineda-jr9ek Modal Works designed their Upgraded Front Mount Intercooler Kit around the design of the Mishimoto J-Line Intercooler core. As you can see in the video the MW Intercooler core mounting bracket lines up properly with the J-line core. Christian from Modal Works went with that specific Intercooler due to its dimensions being suitable for the space available between the radiator support/crash bar and the front bumper. If they are still offering different purchase options for the kit (with or without core) you can try sourcing a Mishi J-Line core yourself maybe you can find one at a cheap price.

I ended up having to special order the missing parts through an Armytrix authorized dealer ‘Vivid Racing’, embarrassing to say, but I pretty much ended up paying around the same amount as a new system which defeated the purpose of buying used. You'll have to slide out the player out to access the lower two screws behind it to remove the AC vents. I didn't need to unplug the player, sliding it forward gave me enough access. 👍

      Can’t say for sure.. I didnt pay any attention to the media selection tool when I had the center console assembly out of the car. Based on images of the replacement unit on eBay there’s mounting holes, the question is whether the screws that secure it are top mount or bottom mount. Could be as easy as just prying up on the panel to expose the mounting screws, but I think the center compartment might have to come out to gain access to remove it.. speaking based on the design of the armrests, I had done another video I never published of removing the armrest from the center compartment. The hinges for the armrests are attached to the center compartment, so it would most likely pose an issue when attempting to pry up on that trim to get it out, assuming that trim has to even be removed. Just not quite sure, not trying to lead you astray. But let me know how it goes.

      @@OneStopShopGarage Many thanks for the very detailed advice and all the additional description. I will be starting "the procedure" soon ;) Can you please share with me your other video on removing the armrest from the center compartment? Either here on YT, on FB or via WeTransfer link, any other app, etc. whatever will be most convenient for you :D You can also drop me an email too. The quality doesn't matter at all; it will be super helpful to watch that one too before I start my work!

      @@GeorgeFire-on7ek to answer your question, I believe it’s possible to do this repair without removal of the center console assembly. From inside the center compartment, once you remove the panel that houses the two connectors, you should be able to access this one T20 screw that secures the front section of the compartment to the center console assembly. You’ll need to undo the two top T20 screws that secure the rear AC panel in place (see my W166 Armrest latch replacement video to know what I’m talking about), you then can carefully pry back on the top of the rear AC panel to remove the two T20 screws as well as the lighting connector (careful not to drop the screws). The center compartment would then be able to be removed, and then you can pry up on the panel that houses the media selection tool. The screws that secure the media selection tool are bottom mount. There’s 4 of them, T20s. You’ll have to unplug the connector for it, so be careful because there’s a clip holding the wiring in place, so don’t just yank it straight out. Hope this helps.

    I hope it's the same way for the 2016 W166 with heated cupholder and Ambient Lighting. I just need to figure out how to remove the cupholder spring cup flaps

      If you decide to go through with the repair, let me know how it goes. Interior design doesn’t appear to be too different when looking at pictures, so perhaps the process is almost like that of the 2015 W166. That’s pretty neat that the 2016 models have heated cup holders; that’s some convenience right there lol.

    Hy there ! Nice work, i did the same thing on my w204 sedan, 2013 facelift. I took from w212 control unit and bezel, but the thing is that it needs coding, because i cannot set the temperatur correctly. It blows only freezing cold, or burning hot. It doesnt matter if i set 21 23 26 it blows only like its on 32degrees celsius. Any advice ?

      Not sure man, sorry. My climate control unit is from a US version W207, but I’m sure that doesn’t really matter. I know that in the Mercedes Benz Diagnostics program (Xentry) the climate control unit is unidentifiable for the vehicle, therefore it registers a fault code in the system. But I never had any issues in my 2015.

    Absolutely the most thorough, step-by-step video for replacing a broken latch for the center console anywhere on TH-cam! The latch on my W166 ML has been broken for months and I’ve been waiting for warmer weather to try and tackle the fix with the little info I had. The timing of this video was perfect! Thanks so much and keep the repair videos coming!
