When I planted the three soil experiment beds, I knew that the Radishes were going to be one of the first crops that we might have results on. Have you ever tried an experiment based on the moon cycles? Do you think it even matters? Thanks for your energy and effort!
Thanks so much for this! There are lots more coming up so stay tuned for those! I have indeed thought about doing some moon cycle experiments and it would be pretty straightforward to run. My hypothesis is that it won't have a significant impact and I guess I'm a bit hesitant to do it as I love the spirituality or energetic approach to growing with the moon cycles and wouldn't want to ruin that for anyone! Haha
New subscriber here, I'm in Ontario. I am a newbie pretty much, and got a raised bed and filled it with Mel's mix, but my radishes didn't turn out very well. Lots of leaves, not much root. I found out they don't like rich soil. I planted them May 1st, and then sowed more seed in another container with Promix organic soil, so far just some leaves, not sure they're going to do well as we're just starting to get some hot weather June 18th as I write this. They are French Breakfast type btw. Next time I'm just gonna get some plain old garden soil and try that! I also planted in raised bed at one end green beans, the other end red onions. Then found out you shouldn't plant them together. The beans leaves are a bit weird, first set ok, second and on they got crinkly. Watered, sprayed with Safer's (saw a red mite), but maybe it's the onions? They are saved seeds from last year. They grew fantastic in a rubbermaid container! Have some Blue Lake beans in that one this year, doing ok. It's a learning curve! 🤷♀
I bought top soil and had biggest radishes ever. Don’t use bagged potting mix or vege mix.you’ll only get green leaf.
If my radishes get a little too peppery or woody, i throw them into a Korean doenjang or a miso soup, with onions, green chilis, the radish greens, and garlic, delicious and very healthy,
I LOVE your videos!!!!! I’ve been gardening for years, and have had successes and failures, but now that I look at my gardening as an experiment I’m a MUCH happier gardener❤️

Oh great question Dawn! That's actually one of the trays from my worm farm! So if you buy a Worm Factory it comes with about 4-5 trays, which happen to work great for other little uses like that!

I’m growing in grow bags with a mix of:
2 coco coir: 1 compost: 1 worm castings:1 vermiculite and it’s really struggling to even get any seed past the seedling stage... any advice?
That is a good mixture you have, definitely would be an environment where plants could grow to full maturity. What have you been doing from a watering perspective and how much sun are they receiving?
Great experiment, I really enjoy videos like this. Two comments: radish greens are fantastic sautéed in butter & garlic (although I think that younger leaves are better); and the differentiator on the soil science bed should probably be nutrient density. I suspect that testing is more expensive though.

I agree there’s a short time frame that the roots taste good. The ones I didn’t eat are flowering now, and I have a few seed pods. That’s the best part, In my opinion. I’ll probably have enough to pickle some too. Each plant makes a lot of them.
Also, I know they were a bit past their prime, but I’m really interested in the comparison of flavours between beds. Did you test them all? My birthday is always a good day for harvesting 😉

Have you seen a compost called Johnson Su bioreactor compost? Its said to be the most potent way recently discovered, Charles Dowding has done it too but would you try vermiculite with it or it alone vs compost vermiculite normal combo or maybe 15 percent instead of 25 vermiculite? Whatever you think is good to try. Where i am i dont know how to get vermiculite easily but i do use the compost i told you here. Optionally to doing it and waiting for a year some people sell it and a company called wormies has said to be the 2nd best Matt Powers said.
Yeah I'd say inconclusive results. Which makes sense for me because in my experience radishes just grow.

My first little radish was good but when I planted more the turned out not good at all .I wonder if it's because I replanted in the same spot a week or so later ?
Did you reammend the soil in between plantings?

Great question! I'd love to also do some nutrient analysis at some point!
That is expensive. Comparing the brix of some of your produce against grocery store and a famers market vendor could be fun and interesting. Get an idea of the quality of your produce and how it changes as soil improves. For me, it is about flavor and quality. But I know yield matters when there are bellies to fill.
Where do you live that you can plant radishes in June it must not get very hot. Where you live out at all radishes are cool weather plants they don’t really grow well in hot weather so it must not get over 60°. 70° where you live.

Plain earth with added compost works great for me. I add red cedar mulch on top. Beaut and easy
