  • Are you wondering what the best spacing is for growing garlic? The traditional approach is to go with 6" intervals. However, there is also an option to-do 6" Off Centre spacing which is much more dense. I wasn't sure if this would be too close for the garlic babies to thrive, so, I designed a spacing experiment and discovered some really interesting results!!

    I've grown Red Russian garlic for the last 10 years, using my largest cloves from each harvest for planting for the next season's crop. I'm amazed at how identically I grow my garlic as you've recommended. Couple inches of compost on the top of my soil, sowing about the time of the first frost, then mulching with leaves and put some kind of cover over the leaves so they don't blow away.
    No, I don't add worm castings to the sowing holes but sometimes I'll add a layer of worm castings to the compost on top of the soil before I sow.
    Also, in early spring I'll remove the leaves until the soil thaws. Remarkably, I've noticed that garlic will start to grow and show sprouts even in frozen soil. Once the soil starts heating up and temperatures increase, I'll add leaves as a mulch until harvest time.
    I liked your experiment planting on 6 inch diagonals. I think I'll try that this year to improve my yield. I also agree with your strategy of planting the larger cloves in each bulb. I found this a good approach after trying it after my second year of growing garlic. Planting bigger cloves definitely produces bigger bulbs.
    Cheers and thanks for postng.

    Jordan ~ do you think it would be ok to substitute biochar for the vermiculite? Love your channel. Thanks for all your help in the garden.

    • @MindandSoil
      @MindandSoil  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not something I have tried so I can't speak from actual experience. But from a theory perspective my concern here would be that that amount of biochar would really increase the carbon in the bed, which would pull the nitrogen away from the plants and probably have them struggling. So, If I was in your shoes I would design an experiment where one part is 5% biochar, another set is 10% biochar, and the third is 25% biochar and see how eachof them does!
